I found I had to hurry my pace when living in NYC. When I'd come back home to see family in leisurely FL, I'd find myself zooming, especially right out of the car, while family took their time.

Now this is funny. While I do keep a fairly brisk pace, I have a friend that walks faster than me. I'm one of his few friends who enjoys walking. So, what happens is that HE ends up way ahead of me because I want to stop and window shop whenever we're out.

There have been times, I let him get ahead of me because I was in no mood to race walk. I figured he'd notice I wasn't there before long. LOL ! I will walk briskly when I have my own errands to run. When I'm out with friends, most times I slow down my pace to theirs because I want to enjoy my time with them.

Yes, I have gone ahead of my party on numerous occasions. I started running in 1972 as a sophomore in high school, dropped back to jogging when I turned age 40, and now, at age 55, have to walk due to a lung disease and knee problems. During the last four decades, there were several times I could out run and walk my peers. I noticed it when sightseeing on trips and visiting new places. I wouldn't tire as quickly as others. It helps on long shopping days, too!

I try real hard to walk the speed of the people I am walking with. I have been told to slow down........What are you doing going to a fire..........?

I'm the one in the back! We were recently on vacation and my family had to stop and wait for me several times. I like to look around when I walk.

Although, apparently I'm a speed demon when I'm at the grocery store or my son's parent teacher conferences! emoticon It's the only way to get around the slow people.

ZORBS13: You make an excellent point. We have to walk at a rate that is comfortable and healthy for us. We all have different speeds and distances, but the fact that we all walk is the important thing.

DRAGONCHILDE: That cracks me up! Great description.

MEGAPEEJ: Great average walking speed! Quite a bit faster than mine. Well, I like to mess around with photo manipulation, so I drive my relatives nuts by constantly inventing new creatures and animal-human concoctions.

I am a super slow walker. Anything faster than a 20 minute mile will result in an injury. I can, however, run a 7 minute mile.

Your avatar cracks me up.

I am tall and have long legs, so I have to monitor my speed continuously to keep from leaving people in the dust. My comfortable "just walking" walking speed is probably about 4 mph, and people are constantly asking me to wait up. I'm not even trying to walk fast!

Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

I've been walking consistently for the last 5 years or so, averaging around 4 miles a day with a day off here or there.

Walkers, what I am wondering, have you ever found that when you are out walking with friends and/or relatives such as shopping or visiting a zoo or on vacation visiting tourist shops that before you know it, you have managed to distance yourself from your buddies without realizing you left them behind.

That invariably happens to me, even though I am not walking fast, in my opinion. I have to be sure to walk behind the group I am with, or before I realize it, I am a block ahead and wonder where they want.

The most humorous time this happened was in NYC, when my children, their SO's, and my wife were walking with me as we headed to Penn Station for our trip back to Boston. I was two blocks ahead and wondered where the heck I was and where the rest of them were.
