Just bought an Octane, just like the one I use at Lifetime The stride is long not high. Really love it.

I don't think it really matters. Maybe read some reviews on each type and see what the pros and cons are. As far as cardio exercise benefits, I doubt it matters.

I would consult with a speciality fitness equipment shop

I have seen both too. I usually don't workout that the gym unless its a group class because I prefer to work out at home. I know ellipticals come both ways but I'm not sure which has better benefits too. I didn't know it would be like high stepping or long striding.

Thats a good idea! I may have to hit up a gym to see which I like better.

Do you have an elliptical?

Agree that most gyms have rear-drives predominantly, but there are also some professional models used by gyms these days that are also front drive...

Think it comes down to the predominant motion you are after - high stepping versus long striding...etc...

Perhaps you should search for the spec's on the best brands and find something that matches most closely?

Why don't you hire something initially - that way you can try out a few models before you commit to purchasing....

I'm going to be buying an elliptical to add to my other home gym equipment, but I'm not sure which is best... a front drive or rear drive elliptical. Can anyone help with some advice?
