If you are new to exercise, those aren't the moves you should be doing yet anyway. Plyometric moves should only be introduced when you have sufficient neuromuscular efficiency and solid core strength. Perhaps you could hire a personal trainer for a few sessions or sign up for small group training. Videos are great, but it's hard to check your own form and learn the moves at the same time. And if you feel that lost, it will give you a confidence boost as well.

BTW, you lose weight at the dinner table, not the gym.

Thanks AugustReady! I got the all clear on Friday. I was able to do light exercise as of the 22nd, and started walking. I am up to 2.5 miles a day now! I can do any exercises I want according to my stress test! I am so happy to get moving again!!

Hi there! It's great you are now able to exercise...given your doctors order from a while back!

Can I strongly suggest that you do more than research online and watch videos to learn these moves.

The exercises you listed are all relatively complex moves, and, given you are new to exercise after a long break, I don't think trying to perform burpees, speed skaters etc...is going to be that wise.

And watching video's or reading online does nothing to help you get the exercises correct in reality if you have no idea what you are doing.

Your idea to hook up with a buddy is a start.

You should also consider getting a programme written for your specific needs, goals and abilities - even if you aren't a member of a gym you can pay a casual rate to get a one-off session to get a professional trainer to help with this...

Good luck!

Checking out Pinterest today I came across a great SP video. I am going to try it later tonight. Singingmaiden, I would love to buddy up with you. I will add you to my page and we can email here, or exchange numbers and text. Anyone else who wants to do the same feel free to add me. I did find out the rec center at school has free personal trainers! I can use the gym equipment free too. Yay! I might be able to strength train yet!

There are so many resources available if you want to learn!

Sparkpeople videos are great, as is youtube. There are a few people on there that have a ton of videos that have good ratings that not only show you how to keep proper form, but also common mistakes so you know what to look out for. If after that you're still stuck or confused or you just don't know what, scheduling a session with a personal trainer to check over your form is a good option as well. A lot of people think they can't afford a personal trainer, but a single session shouldn't be too expensive, and a shared or group session will save even more (though the more people you have, the less personalized attention you'll get).

Also, those are not the only exercises in the world - just because you don't know those exercises doesn't mean you can't exercise! Don't let an excuse like "I can't exercise because I don't know how!" hold you back!

Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

start with the basic strength exercises:

squat
deadlift
lunge
pushup
press
row

The first 3 are lower body, the last 3 are upper body. Perhaps pick one of each per week to learn.

MOMMYRE....If you were a Dancer once...you STILL are!! And if you want to get back to the shape you were in then...just start dancing slowly again..... All that training for dance will come back to you.

A well rounded selection of dancing moves will strengthen you naturally without worrying about specific names for specific moves for specific muscle groups! And if you do have a joint area that's more bothersome now (don't we all!! LOL!!), perhaps look up "knee exercises" or "hip exercises" here on the Spark Fitness page....

It sounds to me with just the walking you've been doing, that you are already on a great road, and getting enough exercise to contribute towards some weight loss and fitness goals!!

This site is an excellent resource for strength training. You don't know the names of the exercises now, but you will after a while. I need to get strength training again too. We can always do it together, keep each other accountable by messaging each other. My plan is to use whatever video is featured on this site for the day.

I should probably clarify. I have been walking, up to 2.5 miles per day. I have missed very few days in the last three weeks. What I mean is I can't strength train because I am too confused. I know I can do some things, but I really need to strengthen my whole body, especially my core and thighs. I have trouble with my hips and knees especially. I know if I can strengthen the muscles around those areas, and lose some weight, I could alleviate some of the pain. I guess I was just being a bit whiny since I am frustrated. I used to be a dancer, but that was a long time ago. I want that body back. I just feel so awkward now.

If you can walk then you can exercise. Start with that. Google how to do everything else and go from there. Personally I don't think burpees, jump squats, and mountain climbers are suitable for beginners anyway. Try normal squats, jumping jacks, half or incline push ups, lunges, etc. Much easier to get the hang of.

Not knowing some specific exercises is no excuse not to exercise - just do exercises that you DO know.

You don't have to be perfect to work out - what matters is just establishing a regular habit of exercise, any exercise. As you get fitter, and learn more, you can then add more sophisticated exercises to your routine.

In terms of new exercise resources www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercise_demo
s.asp?exercise_type=core
has demonstrations of a significant range of exercises.

I didn't know what any of those things were either...but I learned!

google, youtube, magazine articles, group fitness classes, personal training can all help you learn how to exercise.

not knowing how just isn't a valid excuse.

I am trying to eat better, and have been for the most part. I still have areas to improve upon, but I have been doing better, then this week I have gained a pound.

So...simply get on Spark here and watch some of the FREE videos on different exercise routines, and check on the Fitness page for pictures and explanations of other exercises!

And then remember...that its what you eat that is the primary factor is losing weight!! Exercise helps keep you fit, and raises your metabolism some...but not exercising is most likely NOT why you aren't losing weight!!

I do not have any clue what these exercises are. I keep checking things like Pinterest, and other searches, only to be confused. I have no idea how to do a burpee, a jumping squat, or mountain climbers or speed skaters. I can't exercise because I don't know how!
