before I made the switch to minimalist, I'd change out once a year (new shoes for running; old running shoes became my gym shoes; old gym shoes became yard work shoes).

with the minimalist shoes (I like Dr. Scholl's), I'll run in them until they fall apart. They have no cushioning to 'break down'.

When I can feel rocks through the sole.

I buy really supportive stability shoes, so if they're starting to be like pancakes, it's time to move on!

Yep! When the ball of my foot starts acting up, it is time for new shoes! Or when my foot lands on a piece of gravel and it hurts. By then the tread is pretty worn down and the shoes are filthy, so it is obvious. I put it off until the last minute because my Mizunos are very expensive but necessary for helping offset my pronation. I'd say 2 or 3 times per year? I never keep track of mileage, though I wish I did. I usually run for time, not distance.

I don't track mileage at all, but have found that my shoes typically last me around 6-7 months. If I lose track of time, I start to get random aches after running, so then I KNOW it's overdue!

I try to track mileage. Usually between 350-400 miles is when I get a new pair. My calves will start to ache a little when it is time for a new pair. I also use one pair for running only, and a different pair for daily use.

My "running shoes guy" tells me that I should track mileage... but in reality when my knees start bothering me I replace my shoes.

I track mileage but I also look at the bottoms to see how worn out the base looks.

Either 6 months or 200-300 miles. I try to time it such that I'm catching the end of season sales.

I should track the mileage but I base mine on when my feet start to hurt. A new pair usually does the trick.

Another one for tracking mileage. I figure on about 300 miles of good life in a pair, and after that I shop for new ones and retire the old ones to "second string" while they still have a little bit left in them, so I can wear them if it's really muddy or snowy or whatever.

you can track your mileage and get new about every 300-500 miles. I get new when my feet start to hurt after running.

I only run in the summer so every other year or so. I can feel now that my 2 years are up. My shoes will have to get replaced before next summer.

Like others have stated, I keep track of mileage, though I wouldn't call my record meticulous. I use Daily Mile to keep track and when I get around 200 miles, I start checking for sales. I am heavy and pretty rough on shoes, so mine have never lasted anywhere close to the 400-500 of others. I'm hoping that as I lose weight, they will.

Every 300 miles. Or when I feel that they aren't giving me the support they used to.

I meticulously track the mileage on my shoes, and when they get to about 500K, I start looking for my shoes on sale, and paying attention to any random aches and pains that might show up because that is a clear sign the shoes are done.
