I agree with everyone who is familiar with San Diego. Walk! The zoo. Old Town. The beaches. Walk all over! Wear a pedometer, and you'll be amazed at how fast the miles add up.

When my husband and I went to Mendocino recently, we walked everywhere (never drove once we got there). We climbed over rocks. We walked down to the beach. Miles add up quickly when you are surrounded by fun and beautiful places.

San Diego has a lot of places to run - and you can do some pushups, burpees, etc. at the park! Also, there is plenty of places to swim! And cliff walking. Agree - check out Balboa Park. Go to La Jolla and walk among the cliffs and see the seals. If you are in San Diego for only a week, IMHO I would see as much of it as possible, and would spend as little time as possible indoors. Walking around the San Diego Zoo, which is huge, would be fun too! Have fun!

p.s. if you are feeling adventurous there is always Hang Gliding at Torrey Pines (i've always wanted to do that).

You could also try to incorporate fitness into your vacation. In other words, see what kind of active fun you can have in SD! For example, go to the zoo but before you stop at any exhibits, ask your brother to walk a lap around the whole zoo with you first. It's a huge zoo.

There's also a great park (Balboa) in the center of SD that has lots of walking trails. Maybe you could also rent bikes one day with your brother to tour some of the different areas of SD.

You don't have to eat the whole thing.

I've made use of a lot of hotel gyms and I plan to again. Absolutely work out and as Motivated said, it doesn't have to be in a gym. Have fun and enjoy time with your brother!

All the PP are correct. Personally, especially with likely a lot of eating out, I would make sure that you order the healthiest items on the menu and google vacation exercises. I just read a thing on Huffington Post that had some great ones and I printed it out for when I got! SP has a lot of printable routines that use (like M@L said) just your bodyweight. Going for runs and walks is a good way to get cardio in, but so are some circuit strength training exercises!!!

I walk. If there's a dog to be walked, I walk the heck out of it. If not, I just walk. It helps if you have an app on your phone so you can plug in the address of where you're staying so you don't get lost.

I go for a run. I also take with me my portable dvd player. Jillian Michaels kicks my backside at home as well as on my vacation. emoticon

I pay a drop in fee to use the gym when I go to visit my parents in Ohio during the winter. If I'm there in the summer I just run outside. Since the weather in San Diego is so mild you might be able to get away without paying for a gym but if that is where you are most comfortable then stick with it. Just plan our course. You are more likely to stick to your routine if you have it planned out rather than just winging it when you get there. Have fun!

You don't need to go to a gym to exercise.

When travelling, I often get in a LOT of walking and seeing the sights. Climbing stairs is a really intense cardio workout you can do anywhere.

And there are plenty of great ST exercises you can do using just your own bodyweight for resistance - squats, planks, pushups. Resistance bands are great piece of exercise equipment for travelling - cheap ($10-20), portable and versatile. And a lot more durable than a day membership.

Absolutely unless you want to have a lag in your progress. I make and effort to stay where I have access to a gym. My last vacation was sailing but I made an effort to scuba dive, snorkel and swim everyday in addition to sailing.

My brother recently moved to San Diego, and wants me to come visit and see his new home. However, I'm on a really good streak with my nutrition and exercise routine and I don't want to stop for a week.

After looking around I found a gym in San Diego that offers Daily and Weekly rates along with their other rates. I'm wondering if I should sign up for a week while I'm out there, so I can keep up with my workout routine.

Any ideas on how to keep up a workout routine while traveling?
