My doctor says a fever, coughing, or stomach bug means I shouldn't exercise but that it's fine to work out with a simple head cold.
I'll second the motion to avoid the gym if you're contagious - out of courtesy to others and to avoid exposing yourself to lots of germs when your immune system is already taxed.
