Hi, I know how you feel. I take Tae Kwon Do with my daughters. my oldest (10) is working on her 2nd degree, my youngest (6 ) is yellow, and I just started a couple weeks ago 3 days a week. I am about 80 lbs overweight as well. I feel like I'm insanely huge in the white doboks. I'm 5'9" 240 lbs, I am in good shape really, just this belly fat hanging around, I have been doing Commando Krav Maga ( reality based self defense) for 2.5 years and lost 60lbs doing that 10 classes a month 90 mins each. I really like Tae Kwon Do, I've been helping my girls for years, so I figured Why not do it myself. My goal is get my Black belt by my 40th which is in 3 years. I think combining my CKM with TKD and adding weightlifting to it is really going to be beneficial to my weight loss. I realized that TKD uses a whole lot more muscles and different muscles than what I use during CKM. And my CKM has a lot of cardio and lower body exercises and things like pushups. So I think they compliment each other very well for me.
Anyways, got off topic a bit. I felt self conscious at first, there are some things I cant do yet, but I never stop trying, and I am improving every day. I am always available for support if you need it, feel free to add me as a friend if you like..............Carol

I realize this is an older post, but was looking for anything on here having to do with taekwondo. I started back with taekwondo this past summer, after a long layoff. I knew if I didn't just dive right in, I'd make excuses and never do it. But sometimes I am finding I need some encouragement to stick with it. I go with my 10 year old son, and we havent missed a class yet. I'm 55, and probably about 80 lbs overweight. 20 years ago I got my black belt while stationed in korea, but I came back to the states to a new duty station and a divorce, and one thing led to another, and I never got back into it. SInce then I've remarried and had a son at 46, and now I'm finding taekwondo is just as appealing to me as it was in my younger days when I lived and breathed it.
But, I am so fat, and sometimes I feel silly in my giant dobok and my giant chest protector. I cannot jump any more, and feel so sluggish with everything. I have chronic bronchitis and have been having a lot of shortness of breath and coughing (have an appointment next week) so have been severely limited by that. They frequently video parts of a class and post it on their facebook page, and today I caught a glimpse of myself in the background, hence my current discouraged state. Hoping to find others who are taking martial arts while still very overweight.

My kids take tae kwon do and have been trying to convince me to start studying at their school. I'm considering it, but haven't taken the plunge yet. Scheduling classes is my main obstacle.

Is there anyone else on here who does martial arts on a regular basis? I took Karate as a child, but now as an adult, I started doing taekwondo at the beginning of this year and I love the consistency of training multiple times a week and having achievable goals and a set path. Also, it's done a lot for my confidence and shifted my focus from how I look to what my body can do.

Though, I am back to being concerned about how I look and am trying to reign in my eating a bit which is why I'm here. But the routine physical work is doing wonders for my life.
