I've been strength training for about three months now; I do a mix of training on machines at the gym and body weight training on a weekly basis, but always with a day of rest or cardio in between (or more than one, as needed until the muscle soreness fades away). But for the past couple of weeks I've noticed an intense sense of strain in my knees when doing squats, lunges, leg press, etc. It's not pain... yet. But it feels like it could become an injury very easily, I don't know how else to describe it. The only thing that doesn't seem to exacerbate it is yoga.
I'm worried that if I keep pushing, I'll cause an injury, so I've reduced the weight, and ultimately dropped the leg press exercises altogether, as well as lowered the number of repetitions I'm doing, but the weird sensation persists. I'm starting to feel really frustrated, like my strength training progress is making a major backslide because I can't seem to find any lower body exercises that don't make my knees feel stressed. My twin sister has chronic knee issues, and I really don't want to end up in constant pain like her, but I don't want to give up my strength training, either.
I already have an appointment to see my doctor in a few days for something unrelated, but now I'm planning to ask about this, as well. In the meantime, are there any good exercises I can do to keep my lower body strong while this heals, without also putting stress on my injured hip? Or would it be best to just suck it up and take a few rest days? (Or more than a few, if necessary?)
