I am a firm believer that including pushups in one's exercise regimen can be a good thing, when done properly. Unfortunately, for me, I abused my shoulders in my late 20's through late 30's incorrectly doing far too many bench bench routines, bad form and poorly chosen. My shoulders will no longer tolerate push-ups or any exercises that resemble bench-press type repetitions.
Nonetheless, I still think push-ups are a good exercise. I am no fitness expert, however.

IT's October 30 and I have only been doing push-ups since Sept. 16. I do three sets twice (about 30 minutes apart) and my average is up to 15 using the half-push-up form. I won't advance to the full push-up until I can get to an average of 20.
I had a pair of those rotating hand-stands (made out of plastic) and they only lasted for about three sets before they seized up so my advice is to avoid anything made out of plastic. I also have begun using a pair of plastic hand-stands (angled with foam grips) which I had bought many years ago but never used until now. The jury is still out on whether they are an advantage over using just my hands; as I have noticed a slight drop in the number of push-ups that I can do but this may be due to something other than the cheap plastic design of these hand-stands.
With hands: maximum of 20 modified push-ups. With hand-stands: maximum of 19 modified push-ups.
Interesting article. I have always shied away from doing "boy" pushups because I didn't have the upper body strength and felt like I got a better work out from the 25-30 girl pushups I could do at a time compared to the two boy push ups. I recently gave it another shot and surprised myself by eeking out 10 boy push ups! So I've been trying to do a few sets and I'm definitely interested in trying some of these tips to get better at it!
There was a blog recently that came in the spark mail about push-ups. I don't know if it was a recent blog or one of the 'best of's. It was about different ways to do push-ups and was maybe written by Coach Nicole. I saved it but then had to replace my hard drive and lost it.
I've searched for it but I can't find it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about it? Did anyone book mark it?
