i am surprised every day that people will just take the random words and advice of strangers, and the paid messages influenced by sponsors on free internet sites, and never take the time to sit down and actually educate themselves about what is happening in their body and how food and different kinds of exercise affect it. They just jump headfirst into some exercise and nutrition ideas without understanding them completely, and then they lose 50 or 100 pounds and want to know why they are so weak and their bodies look so warped and unnatural at the end.

Its not just MORE MOVEMENT, it's using your brain and your body. Its educating yourself. THat way it never happens to your kids. Cause it wont be just - dont eat like mommy and daddy, itll be - legit knowledge you can pass on. Instead of BS like - all you can do is raise or lower your calories, WTF.

A wizened old man who trains police officers at the HPD Academy offered this bit of wisdom in a recent health and fitness ongoing education class I took:

"Weight loss is easy. It's a simple calculation. The amount of calories you burn has to exceed the amount you shovel into your mouth,"

He went on to explain that we had the power to affect this calculation in one of two ways: either we had to eat less - that is, take in less calories - or else we had to burn more - that is, do more working out.

In order to try and meet my goal, I have increased my exercise from about 2 hours a week to the point where I am now doing more than 4.

I hate it. I loathe exercise. I am not a 'feel the burn' kind of guy, never have been. I hate the way it makes me feel, the aches and pains I wake up with the next day.

I would much rather be sitting on the couch playing video games.

But I love the fact that I had to turn in all my work uniforms last week to get a set with a waist that was six inches smaller.

I finally increased my steps to 230 a day. I started at just a few and worked my way up to 180.

Dr. Oz says that standing burns more calories than sitting. I used to sit down while ironing clothes. Now I stand, listen to music and swing to the tunes while getting that tedious chore done.

Long walk with one dog in morning, walk other older ones for shorter periods later in the day, side step while brushing teeth, go get it myself rather than asking son to get something for me, break up sitting at computer with 5 to 10 min sessions of either doing low impact aerobic moves or getting on the elliptical.

I'm about to go back to school for my Sr. year of college. Since I commute, and the parking garage is WAY away from the classrooms, I figure I'm going to add about 2 walking miles to my routine. I also have a break in the middle of the day long enough to swim laps in the university pool so I'm going to give that a try. emoticon
My job is at a self-storage place and so, lucky for me, I have to walk around the facility at least once a day but lately I have been doing it a couple times a day. emoticon

I walk to the supermarket every day instead of doing one big shop on the weekends with the car like most people.

Lately I've been taking a backpack and my Nordic walking poles with me, as using the poles helps burn more calories, and I've also made a point of going to shops that are farther away so I get more minutes of movement in. It has become a healthy habit rather than what I'd consider "exercise".

Yes, I like this one too. I always park far away from the store when I go shopping to get a little extra walking in.

I have arthritis in my knees and ankles, so stairs are hard for me. I find I would rather add the extra steps to go the long way around to a ramp than take the extra stairs. At work, though, I will take the stairs if I'm going to someone's office that's only one or two floors away (as long as I already know where it is; otherwise I walk down to the elevator because every floor has a little map by the elevators telling you where all the cubies & offices are).

I sit at a desk all day long. I engage my abs and hold for 10 sec and do 3reps of 10. I go to the gym or walk on my lunch hour and eat my lunch at my desk either before or after my hour lunch break. I always pack a healthy lunch and snack. Doing this during the week keeps my energy up and my motivation going.

I can relate - it is my biggest challenge to get those 10000 steps in when I'm behind a desk or in meetings all day. I finally reached it yesterday and I was so excited. The alert definitely helps me and I too have become a pacer especially when on a conference call and no one can see what I'm doing.

I work from home, and before I started on my path to health and fitness I would often sit still at my desk for hours at a time.

I got a Fitbit in February, and in April I finally decided that I was going to get 10,000 steps per day, no excuses. Here was my big breakthrough: I have an hourly reminder on my phone that tells me how many steps I should have by that time if I'm on pace to get to 10,000.

Since it is so hot right now, I get up around 6:30 and try to get at least 5,000 steps in, either running or walking. When I am on the phone during the day, I pace. When I'm waiting for my coffee to brew, I do laps around the kitchen island. If I'm standing in line for anything, anywhere, I march in place (I may look silly but I don't care).

I walk to and from work (adds up to 1.5 mile) and use the ladies room on the second floor. When I walk the dog, I jump or jog in place when he stops to sniff and stuff. At lunch, I walk around the block 4 times which is a mile.

That is a fabulous idea. I find if I can use"have to" situations like that, that I just forget I'm exercising and enjoy the "transition" time. Good thinking!

I make multiple trips whenever possible. So if I'm making dinner I only get out 1 or 2 things out at a time. I also have my sister (severely multiply impaired in a wheelchair she can move) help whenever possible so I'm constantly stepping around the wheelchair or the dogs who want to be involved if she is.
I can only sit for about 15 minutes at a time because of a back injury so I'm always up walking around even if I'm just pacing in a small space.

I work from home, so I spend most of my time in my bedroom or office, both in the back of the house. I have a mental rule that any time I walk to the front (living, kitchen area) I have to do 3 quick tasks, straightening up, quick vacuum, sweeping. I don't count it as regular fitness minutes since I am so sendentary while working, but it gets me moving and keeps chores kept up also. I also have a mini jogging trampoline in my office that I jump on and jog or bounce for a few minutes a couple times a day when I need to take a break from endless computer work.

I walk during my fifteen minute breaks twice a day if possible. I also walk for at least twenty minutes during my lunch. That way by the time I leave work, I have walked for 50 minutes...

I also started zumba at night, and lunges, squats, sit ups when sitting around watching tv. Hoping to jiggle myself thin...lol emoticon

Forgot, I have also started walking around the parking lot, while my kids are in lessons/ sports practice, I spend the first half of their lesson walking, then I pop in to cool down and watch what they are doing during the 2nd half. That way I'm not wasting time sitting, there but I am still engaged in what they are doing as well.

I try to close my office door for 10 minutes a day.. I do wall push-ups, some ab work, walking in place, squats, lunges.. basically whatever I feel like as long as I am moving for 10 minutes.

If I can't find time to close myself off, I go to the bathroom and lock the door, then I do the same thing in there (minus abs..don't want to be on bathroom floor) :)

When school starts, I will tack on 30 minutes after my workday to go for a walk or stop at the gym.

Instead of sitting down and surfing pinterest and sparkpeople, I take my Ipad to the elliptical and get a few miles in while I browse. I end up inspired to eat right and start new projects. I don't go as fast as when I am concentrating on the physical workout, but it burns a lot more calories when I move instead of sit on a chair to web surf.

I bike commute, that way no matter what my energy level is I still have to get to work, home, and run errands. So even if I'm trying to talk myself out of the gym, I still have at least 40 minutes of bike/ cardio to do.
I take walks at lunch. Now that the weather is so hot, I'm only out for half an hour around my office building. But when the weather is nicer I take my full lunch hour and walk around down town. Also, when the weather is not so "fry and egg" hot, I will re-instate my after-work hike.
And, I will admit it, I also "Chair Dance" when a good song comes on (of course, I only do that when no one is looking.) ;)

If weather permits, I bike to and from work. Usually after work since I am already biking, I will do a long bike ride. Also during the day at work I will do squats and lunges every hour to get the blood pumping.

I'm lucky enough to live in an area where I can walk for most of my errands so that's my 'more movement'. I walk my daughter to/from school, walk her to/from swim lessons, walk to the drug store, etc. All this is on top of my running four days a week.

Wow, good inspiration! I like the stick in the cup idea. I just had a knee replacement a few weeks ago so my movement is short and limited so far. When I go downstairs to do laundry etc I hop on the rec. bike for a few minutes before I go upstairs again. Adds up as the day goes on. I've started to double the stairs, going back up and then down again. (can't do both legs yet) I do do squats or calf stretches often in the day, in the bathroom, kitchen etc. Know that as time goes on I will be able to do more. Great ideas here!

Linda

when i'm at work i'm on my feet all day but instead of just standing at the counter (I work at walmart) i keep moving. If there are no customers I zone the dept. i'm in and if that is done i just walk circles around the dept. or up and down my aisles

I love stores with Cart Corrals. For me, parking way out in the boonies, but near a Cart Corral is even better than parking right by the door. You don't have to wait until all the pedestrians clear out before you leave your parking space, and it's usually a shorter drive to the parking lot entrance.

Doing squats, forward bends and jumpking jacks when I arrive at work; go up and down the stairs 10 times on lunch break; do sets of calf raises while scanning/photocopying; make sure to take breaks and stretch or walk around the library; get off the bus a few stops early to get some extra walking in.

Waking up at 5:00 am and doing treadmill, walking into work, taking a morning break and walking around fitness track 10x, walking to car after work.....it's a start. Forgot my Fitbit today (bummer).

Focus! You can do this!

Doing High knees down the hall of my office, it gets me a quick burst of movement and additional steps in, also give me a motivator. Also, I do squats in the bathroom every time I go. I try to get in 10 per restroom break.

You go girl! Mary Lou, you are an inspiration for walking 4 miles to work!!! I love to take my kids out, so we do things in the neighborhood - in fact, we should go now!!!
