A lot of people do get sleepy in mid-afternoon. There's nothing wrong with a short power nap, but most of us have to work and don't have that luxury.

You've been given good advice so far, but let me throw in my two cents on your lunch: If you eat too much carbohydrate with not enough fat or protein in a meal you crash after a few hours. I've found that fruits and vegetables for lunch along with some lean protein make me feel great. That often means a big salad with diced chicken and light salad dressing, and a piece of fruit, maybe some whole grain bread. I drink a cup of green tea afterwards. This is, for me, a "power lunch" and I love the energy it gives me.

No, protein pretty much helps everything if you go from not getting enough of it to getting enough. How much coffee have you been drinking? A lot in the morning and then none can lead to that afternoon crash as your body loses it's faux energy source. Me personally, I drink 1 12oz cup mid morning, and then another at around 2pm. I don't feel the roller coaster at all and it gets me through the afternoon beautifully, even if I was bad and running a little behind with sleep. Coffee after 3 or 4 I've noticed keeps me up at night.

I can't see your trackers so I don't know if maybe your lunches are bad or not, but from another comment I would second the advice to get more protein. Most people don't get enough honestly.

I used to get really tired around the same time and ever since I started tracking my diet and (staying withing my ranges for carbs, fat and protein) working out 3-4 days a week, I have found I have alot more energy. I found I am sleeping better as well. I hope all the suggestions help from everyone else and me can help.

You may actually need more protein. You're very low. That might help your body stay fueled.

Bonnie - no need to worry, it's just your Circadian Rhythm. It's your body's natural sleep/wake cycle. The reason most people get sleepy in mid-afternoon has little to do with what they eat or the mattress they sleep on (those are just marketing ploys!). Our ancestors came from very hot regions of the world and it was customary (as with most predators) to sleep in mid afternoon when the temps are too hot for hunting .... remember, we ARE animals underneath all this brain power. Our bodies haven't fully caught up with our migration to all different climates, so we sometimes get afternoon sleepiness because our Circadian Rhythm still thinks we need it. It's OK to have a "power nap" around these times, if you can fit it in. Just stay away from caffeine and sugar as they will only make you crash later.

BONNIEBONNEAU,

It's not unusual to get a mid afternoon slump especially if you wake up early in the morning. Do make sure that you're eating plenty of wholesome foods that are high in fiber. Also, do you drink coffee in the morning ? Some times that afternoon slump could be related to a caffeine crash.

One thing you might try if you need a pick me up is to skip the coffee in favor of herbal tea. I tend to drink black tea in the morning and green (herbal) in the afternoon.

Do you have a snack ? It is okay to have snacks. Spark People does consider snacking a part of a healthy lifestyle. Have some fresh fruit, some nuts, maybe a half a sandwich or granola bar. It's just a little something to take the edge off.

Mostly, do make sure you're eating a healthy lunch that has enough calories to FUEL the rest of your day. That's a mistake many women make. They deprive themselves during the day in hopes of saving calories for a a large dinner. This is no good because it causes many people to overeat later. Try to space out your meals if you can and do make sure you're eating enough calories. You might even consider adding a bit of protein to your salad. Maybe some lean chicken or tuna. A little extra protein will help keep you sated so that you don't have an urge to grab something sugary for a quick fix.

All the so called "secrets of success"will not work ... unless you do.

Since I can't see your trackers, I can't see what you are eating.

If you aren't eating sugar, that is good, but processed foods and such can give you that same crash around 3.

Also, how much sleep are you getting? How much water are you drinking? It is amazing that all of these things can help you to have more energy.

Me? I usually have a delicious (for me) salad for lunch. All whole foods, veggies, and sometimes with lean meats.

If I start getting hungry again (around 3) I have a great snack.

That usually keeps me going for the day!
