Make an appointment with an orthopedist. Some cracking is normal, but pain after walking up steps is not normal.

I asked my doctor about this, because my knee will crackle loud enough that you can hear it sometimes! He said it was the cartilage wearing thin, and was a natural part of aging. Basically, as long as it doesn't hurt, it's not something to worry about.

But in your case, you're reporting pain. This isn't normal, and you should talk to your doctor about it to determine the cause.

I also had crackling in my knees, losing weight has made it all but disappear. Every pound you carry puts 4 pounds of pressure on your knees.

That said, I never experienced pain with it. That may be worth mentioning to your doctor.

Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

You could have bursitis, which is the reason you hear crackles. Burs are formed whenever the tendons of your knee, especially the patellar are stressed. They are like little bumps that form as skar tissue. I DON'T know if you have this exactly, but I think I do, and you have the same symptoms as I do in my right knee. My knee cap is slightly upward, so it pulls on the tenden tooo much, caused scarring, then crackling every time I go up or down stairs. Kinetic tape is exactly what should be used. BUT, you need to go to a physical therapist in order to know exactly which way to place the tape. If your kneecap is misaligned, the doctor will be able to tell you how to tape and which muscles to stretch and strengthen in order to align it again.

My knee crunches and hurts all the time. I use kinetic tape and tape my knee which really cuts down on the pain. You tube has all kinds of video's on how to apply the tape or a sports therapist can do. The tape will usually stay on for about 3 showers.

Eventually I have to have mine scoped to remove the shredded meniscus but I am trying to put that off as long as possible.

My left knee "crackles" sometimes, usually when I'm doing things like squats and lunges. I haven't gotten it checked out because there's never any pain. Pain, however, is something I would definitely see a doctor about, just in case. emoticon

I had something similar and it turned out, it was arthritis in my left knee. Of course, I had a couple of injuries specifically targeting that knee and I was overweight. You may want to get it checked out by a doctor.

For the record, the arthritis doesn't stop me. I exercise 6 days a week and even run distance races, including half marathons.

I'm working on upping my step count right now for fitness. That said, I'm taking the stairs instead of the elevator, when I do my knees make crunching/crackling noises and it often hurts some when I get to the top of the stairs. Thoughts? Suggestions?
