I had a similar experience a few years ago, I couldn't make it all the way across the monkey bars so I ended up doing some assisted pull ups instead. I kept my feet on the platform to take some of the weight off so I could actually do them :)
I had been doing that type of thing for a few years and at Christmas I decided I would like a pull up bar. It was the best present ever! I couldn't do any pull ups and only 2 chin ups when I got it. So I did sets of 8 slow lowers to build strength and now I can do 8 consecutive chin ups and 5 consecutive pull ups. It's amazing how pull ups work the core.
I think I'm going to have to go try those monkey bars again real soon!
