For me weight loss is 80% exercise and 20% diet. All of us are different. I could eat perfectly for weeks at a time and I would not lose anything if I was not also exercising.
Walking is a great start. When I started exercising after a long illness, swimming was a good choice for me because it was non-weight-bearing. It is also cool and refreshing, which is great if you are out of the habit of sweating or if you are living in a hot/humid climate. Plus it is very easy to measure how far you have gone in laps or lengths and increase that incrementally. I went from bedridden to swimming a SLOW half mile three days a week to being someone who works out hard for at a least an hour six days a week. It took me a year to really build up muscle mass and endurance again.
