I use a sportline pedometer from Sports Authority. I believe it cost around $35. I would like to get a fitbit or something similar, but this worked really well for me especially in the beginning. I think it helped me to be more aware of how many steps I was taking and I found myself looking for ways to get more steps in.
As far as calories, if you mean calories burned during exercise, I used the fitness tracker here on Spark. I have found that using the nutrition and exercise trackers here can be extremely beneficial.
Oh, and I also did the 5K your way walking program when I started, that helped me to set and reach a specific goal. That really helped me to start exercising regularly.
