This is going to limit your upper body workouts somewhat, but I agree with the suggestion of consulting a physical therapist to design a routine that you CAN do.

It is worth remembering that the upper body is only one of three muscle groups, and you can still work the lower body and core. And the lower body and core are much larger muscles than the upper body, and you are always going to get a larger metabolic effect from working these larger muscles, than the smaller upper body muscles anyway.

I don't have shoulder problems, but I do have a knee problem. Something I am having to do is to start out keeping the weight at zero on the leg machines, and instead focus on just getting my knee moving. Eventually, I'll start with light weights. It's hard to not add the weight, but it sure helps. You may want to try the same thing with the arm machines.

I agree with the suggestion to see a physical therapist. I recently started seeing one because of some shoulder issues of my own (just one shoulder, though), and she is working with me to create an upper body workout that doesn't aggravate my shoulder.

I agree with the suggestion to see a physical therapist. Your doctor should be able to give you a referral to see one, and that person can design a set of exercises specific to your needs.

Hope that helps,

Your best bet would be to consult a physical therapist who can design a program based on your limitations. When you're cleared for exercise by your doctor, you can also check out the Limited Mobility lifestyle center which has exercises you may be able to do:

I have shoulder problems with both my shoulders. This is an injury that will never get better. My doctor says I cannot lift more than 5 pounds and I cannot do anything above shoulder height. Also, I cannot do things like pushups. This discourages me. What strength training can I do that will benefit me? I want to build some muscle so I burn more calories throughout the day.
