Also consider whether you are truly swimming for 1 hour. I know when I first started, I spent quite a bit of time clinging to the side of the pool to catch my breath. And, just like running, effort plays a role as well. Leisurely laps, like walking, will not burn the same amount of calories as speed laps or sprinting.

The calculators that take into account distance are much more accurate than SP's for swimming.

Is this from swimming or from walking in the water?

I've been doing aerobics in the pool for a long time & recently returned to swimming laps as well. I get way high numbers for calories burned from the Spark calculator - for all my fitness, actually. I just track the minutes and leave the calories alone. When I use a heart rate monitor the calories burned figure is a fraction what Sparkpeople says; I am more inclined to trust the monitor for this information.

Spark's calculator takes into account your body weight, on the assumption that heavier people burn more. This holds true for many (most?) forms of exercise, including walking, aerobics, etc.

However, swimming is not a weight bearing exercise (you naturally float in water), and this can introduce a distortion into Spark's calculations, especially for heavier people.

Also, as a reality check, most people burn between 6 and 10 calories a minute (360-600 an hour) through sustatined exercise. 6 at the more moderate end, 10 being more vigorous. Someone who is pretty fit and really pushing things might get to 12-13 a minute. Figures above 800 an hour should be regarded with a great deal of suspicion. 1450 an hour can safely be assumed to be the result of some faulty assumptions, and is NOT a realistic figure.

It's hard to know why there is a difference. Our site's calories burned numbers are based on your current weight- not sure if the others take that into account or not.

I've just recently started swimming and when I put in an hour of crawl stroke swimming in the exercise part of my fitness tracker area it gives me over 1450 calories burned. I've found that most other websites have an hour of crawl between 600 and 800 calories burned. I've also found that the amount of calories burned using breast stroke is much higher on Sparkpeople.com then other websites. What gives?
