Unlike longer distances (eg. half or full marathon), you don't have to do too much to prepare for a 5K.
* Ensure you are well hydrated beforehand, but don't drink anything for about 20 minutes immediately before the race
* Have at least something to eat beforehand, but not a huge meal.
* Arrive early and walk for 5-10 minutes before the race to warm up. Latest research suggests that you shouldn't stretch cold muscles, so stretching beforehand is best avoided.
