Maybe you're doing too much too soon. Is the pain on the inner half of your shin or the outer half? That can give clues as to the cause.

The impact of running is hard on the body, and it can take a while for your leg muscles and tendons to (re)adapt to the impact.

I'd recommend building up a solid base of walking before trying to run, and then transitioning to running through a Couch to 5K program. www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_artic

VESUVIOUS, I used to run. I got sick this past January and was just released by my doctor to exercise again. I put on more weight during this time and know that running is a great way to drop the extra pounds. I didn't used to get shin splints. I figured it was the extra weight and being out of shape. Thanks for the help!!

Are you normally a runner? Do you normally get shin splints? stretching, ice can help with shin splints.

After a couple of minutes into a run, my left shin begins to hurt. I was told it was my shoes, but I just bought a brand new pair of running shoes and it still hurts. Needless to say, I have to stop running. Any ideas on how to stop the pain so I can run farther?
