I look towards SparkPeople for help, look at my collage, or think about where I want to be at in 6 months. If I really don't feel like exercising, I'll find small things to track. I'll do 10 minute sessions of light exercise throughout the day until I've reached my goal. I'll go for a walk. As long as I track something, I know I'm doing OK. I'll be less likely to give up, and then when I regain my motivation, I don't look back at that period as time lost.

I've looking for some good motivation too - as it seem a lot of others are. Some people on this particular thread talk about reading some good motivational blogs. Can anyone point to any in particular? Not sure how to find motivation blogs here on SP. Thanks for any help.

We all lose motivation once in a while. I find it is crucial, if I've gotten off track, to not let it go on for more than a day or 2 at most. Even if I've "fallen" I keep wearing my pedometer, and logging my food on SP - even if it's hard to see! Also, reading motivation articles on SP and reaching out to SFriends, just by posting something like "I need help" will get a response from people anxious to help and see you get back on track. I'm constantly amazed at how much the encouragement on SP means to me.

Blessings,
Nancy

I take out my pictures from b4 my weight loss and think of how far I've come. My 1st day @ gym I walked for 35 mins @ 3.5 mph @ no elevation and I was proud of my 1st step. Now I can run 4.5 miles @ 5.8 mph in 46 mins without any breaks.
Whenever I think about these things I get more motivated.

It's possible that there is something more than just a loss of motivation going on with you. It might be a good idea to talk to your doctor and see if he can get to the bottom of it.

HappyGirl581,

Don't be disgusted with yourself. You wouldn't be that mean to me because I'm discouraged. I know just how you feel. I will eat well and exercise and get nowhere. Is it my age (56)? I track my food and I'm proud of my diet - mostly healthy things with a treat thrown in now and then. I'm 40 pounds overweight with that horrible belly fat around my "waist." When is it time to give up? When is it time to just throw in the towel and buy big clothes and quit? I get so discouraged!

I refuse to die fat!

I have definatley lost all my motivation! I don't feel like doing anything! I have gained back everything I lost! I am so frustrated and disgusted at myself. Motivational articles don't seem to help much with me. I am just disgusted! I don't know how else to put it.

went to my uncle's funeral last Thursday - been hard since, haven't logged in for a few days, but instead of over indulging in emotional eating - I am pouring those emotions into making better daily results in counting my steps on my pedometer...had my best day yesterday... July is coming up. I hope to pay attention to each individual day and make each a good one.

I take a day or two off from self improvement and use them to take stock of my life telling myself that if I'm happy with where I'm at I can call it quits but I can never complain about myself again. Sometimes it takes a few more days but eventually I come around! One of these days I'll be perfect and then what will I have to do with my almost nonexistent spare time?

I have learned not to reward myself with what got me here in the first place. I now look at rewards being something like a new pair of earrings, a new top I have had my eye on, in a smaller size of course. I think, manicure, pedicure. What better reward than to treat yourself to something nice.

I CREATED THIS. MY LIFE IS THE RESULT OF THE CHOICES I'VE MADE.

My youngest (60 year old daughter) hates it.

Keeping motivated will always be a problem. I'm 87 now and still have trouble. One thing that helps me is having a walking buddy. Six mornings a week we walk 2 miles minimum. Neither of us wants to be the one to whimp out so we are quite consistent. I have the above posted on my door so I can't miss it as I come and go.

I've been having motivational issues this week! That said I still managed to walk over 10 miles. I keep reminding myself that even though my scale is not moving (for alomost 3 weeks now!!!) my measurements are changing for the better and I am wearing scrubs I haven't worn in 2 years AND getting compliments at work about my weight loss. I'm trying not to lose faith that I will once again see the scale move.

During past diets, I have rewarded weight loss with a muffin and even this time around I was telling myself when I lose 10 lbs, I'll go get my favorite pumpkin muffin from Whole Foods. It sounds silly and yet I'm sure we're not the only two who want to celebrate weight loss by having our favorite foods. Hopefully, our respective cravings will pass. Best of luck with the job interview. Talise11

Talise11, thanks for the reminder to measure if the scale doesn't move. I'm trying to be ready for job interviews and I feel like a joke lugging my 175 pounds into the room. I lost 2 pounds this week and now I'm trying to resist the siren call of macaroni and cheese to celebrate! How ridiculous! Just typing it down helps me see the futility of rewarding myself with carbs.

I can relate to losing motivation. I weighed myself on Friday and again today & I haven't lost any weight for the last 2 weeks. It's devastating. I've been tracking for a bit over 3 weeks and I've only lost 2 lbs. I've exercised an average of 3xs a week and still nothing. I even hired a trainer to work with me on Friday, though it was expensive & I'm not sure I want to continue working with him. Today, I was feeling very down so I went to the park and walked 2.5 miles in the hope that the beautiful scenery would cheer me up and it worked a bit. Being surrounded by the beauty of nature soothed me. I took the advice of other people on Spark & measured my waist and though I haven't lost weight over the last 2 weeks, the good news is I lost an inch from my waist. I'm incredibly grateful for that though of course I would like to see the scale move. Reading the posts here has also been helpful. Sometimes motivation fails us, so I'm trying to at least get up and take a walk when I want to give up. I want to thank everyone on this thread for all the great advice about staying on track. Thank you.
Talise

I spend time with my brother, who is developmentally disabled and lives with me, and realize that I HAVE to try hard to keep going so I can be here for him for a long time. I try to realize that others need me so I can't be selfish and keep wrecking myself with food. I am hardly the best at keeping to my program, but every time I begin the plan again it is because I have been thinking about his future.

That is great advice, Arizona33, and I'm glad you were able to turn it around for yourself. So right: one poor choice doesn't erase all the good choices.

I actually made a list yesterday in response to a frustrating work-related setback. Negative feelings in one area can spill over into another, such as food choices, and I didn't want that to happen. The work issue was threatening to ruin my whole day.

So I wrote down all the good to great things that also happened yesterday--landing two new customers, finishing a different work task and getting good feedback, finding a great dress for my friend's wedding...AND getting in 30 minutes of cardio and staying within my calorie range.

I realized the work problem is just a challenge I haven't solved YET. But I will. Maybe not today. But I can and will figure it out. And in the meantime, I'm not going to use that as an excuse to undo any of the weight-loss and fitness progress I've made so far! Because why would I want MORE things to feel bad about?

Eat to fuel your body, instead of working out to offset calorie consumption.

Courage comes from the Old French for "heart". To be courageous literally means to do something heart-felt.

No matter how bad your day has been or how many poor choices about what you choose to eat or if you decided to skip your workout; just remember that there are at least 5 things that you can write down to be grateful for.

So, I keep a list of the things that I am grateful for and each day I write down 5 things. It helps me to move my thinking from the bad, bad chooses to thinking about the positive things that have happened in my life. And, sometimes on days where nothing seemed to go right and the choices that I made regarding nutrition and exercise where poor my list may be something like:
1. A stranger smiled at me causing me to smile back--it is amazing how a simple smile can change your day or at least that moment in time!
2. I made an ad sale today at work and helped a business owner with their marketing and advertising.
3. Last night I could not sleep and so I went outside and there was a cool breeze; so I lay down on the grass in the back yard and looked up at the stars for a few minutes like I use to do when I was a kid and looked for the constellations that my dad taught me about when I was a little girl. It is amazing how looking up at the stars reminds me that my everyday problems and decisions are small in relation to the vast universe that we live in--it is okay to make a mistake as long as I keep moving forward.
4. I ate 10 chocolate candies but at least I didn't eat the whole bagful of candies.
5. My son gave me a hug today and said that he loved me.

So, you see even on days where it might seem hard to come up with 5 things to be grateful for because all you can think about is that you really blew your diet plan; there is always something that went right and that you can focus on. It truly is the little things in life that make a difference. We just have to stop long enough to recognize the good things in our lives.

Just take one step at a time. One poor choice never erases all the good choices that you have made. So...go make some more good choices and when you make a poor choice leave it in the shadows behind you and look towards the bright and promising path the sun lays out before you as you have the choice to move forward one step at a time making healthy decisions. Good luck--you can do it!

I try to find a way to squeeze in exercise even when it seems next to impossible. Popping on the tv and pulling my pilates machine in front of it is motivation. I still get to see my favorite shows while working out.

Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.

I recently lost my motivation for about 3 days. I was up in the mountains on vacation and practiced pretty much no self-control. When I came home I attempted to add up my calories for the weekend, and was shocked at how high they were, and I probably underestimated my total calorie counts. But am I sorry for my 3 days of fun in the mountains? Not really. Take a break, deal with it, and then get back on track. Eventually you decide you really do feel better when you eat right and exercise the way you want to.

I look at why. It relates to what's going on in my life. By being aware that it's things OUTSIDE of myself, I keep track of the factors as they change and know my Sparking will get back to its normal high level. But like someone said, don't let things go completely.* There is always some level of Sparking we can do no matter what is going on. Just do your best.

It's surprising how much circumstances come to play on us. But giving up is the last thing we should do, that's for sure.

*URGETTINTHIN gets credit for the above reference.

Sometimes the work overwhelms me. It is then when I start missing my workouts, or reaching out for some sweet treat more often. But then again it does not take too long for me to realize that the only way is to fight back and gain control of my life. Then I fight back, and resume my workouts and eating right.

I guess the reason I get this fight-back feeling is I keep monitoring myself even when I am engaged in less than ideal eating and lifestyle practices. So after a while I get fed up with it and I fight back.

I've learned the key is not to stop completely.
Even 20 mins a day two 10 min intervals is better than nothing. You'll get back on track eventually.

I turn up my happy music, maybe even watch a dance video of some sort and say to myself "i realize that's hollywood, however in order to be fit and able to pursue dance, I have to KEEP pushing myself!"....and being just a tadbit vain about how I look/weight, helps too. emoticon

I go back to my "backbone" rock bottom conviction that I am sick and tired of living inside this fat. If I have just blown it a bit I get up and do something, anything that is a step in the right direction. However small that step is, its a step. Then I take another one. And as time goes on momentum builds and I am starting to feel proud of what I am accomplishing and it makes me want to do more. Keeping track of what I do each day helps me. Even if I have a slump, I do something the next day to offset the slump to make the chart I am building look better. Having a way to see what I am doing helps me keep it up. So my down times 'can't last that long.' I want to make my progress visual a joy to see.

Think about this. Re-read it if you must, I know I always have to say it at least three times.

"I must act myself into rightful thinking instead of thinking myself into rightful acting."

This essentially means that if I am waiting to want to do it I will be waiting for a loooooooooong time. My sponsor used to repeat this to me when I was in need of motivation.

Ash :)
