I sat in the steam sauna at my gym for 10 minutes in between my cardio sculpt class any my shower today during my lunch break. I don't know about benefits but it def gave me time to relax and be by myself in the middle of the day. I only spent a short time since I had to get on with my day but it was nice!

How long a person can stay in a sauna depends on the person and the type of sauna. We own a small, one person, far infrared sauna which I believe offers more benefits than a steam sauna. Because infrared sauna therapy heats the body directly rather than simply warming the air, it raises the core body temperature and produces a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where most toxins reside. Far infrared also aids in blood pressure reduction, detoxification, pain relief, anti-aging & skin purification, wound healing and helps improve circulation. I personally spend 30 minutes per session in our infrared sauna - I've never used a steam sauna, so I'm not sure what the recommended time is for a steam sauna. We purchased ours several years ago to assist my spouse in detoxing from heavy metal toxicity and it helped speed that detoxification process up tremendously.

Sitting in a sauna can help reduce stress by allowing your muscles to relax. Sitting in a sauna can help open up the pores to cleanse them. It can help some folks reduce aches and pains. What it won't do is help a person lose weight. I know there have been articles that have said that a person can burn 1,000 calories just sitting in a sauna, but that's a misconception. Any weight a person loses is strictly water weight. And you'll put that back on the minute you drink some water.

How long to stay in ? Use common sense. if you start feeling uncomfortable, it's time to get out. figure 10-15 minutes would be fine. staying in longer is asking to end up like a steamed clam.

I sat in the sauna this morning for 20 minutes before my class. What are the benefits if any? Does it matter if you go before or after a class? How long should you sit in the sauna?
