I had surgery on my torn meniscus several years ago, as well as some work on my ACL and cartilage removal. I still need an ACL replacement (been putting it off). I have minor arthritis.
Regular, moderate exercise has made an enormous difference for me in controlling the pain, stiffness, and instability. It's been a slow but very steady improvement. Losing weight also helped.
I'd ask your doctor or PT if there are suggested exercises to do. I got a list of strength and flexibility exercises from my PT & still do them regularly.
In regards to cardio, my PT started me out walking and on an exercise bike. Now, I can do all the cardio machines at the gym just fine. I'm back to playing tennis too (with a brace, of course!).
The more I do, the better I feel. I just have to be really careful about overdoing it - learned my lessen the hard way.
