Walking burns calories because it is weight-bearing exercise, and you have to lift your body weight (even if it's just a fraction of an inch) with every step. If you were carrying groceries in a backpack, then yes, you would be burning more calories.
When carrying your groceries in a cart, the extra weight goes down through the wheels, rather than your legs. With a good cart on level ground the extra calorie burn is minimal.
