I don't know if you need them just because; I wouldn't shell out for them unless a reason to wear them arises. In my case, they were recommended to me after I started dealing with shin splints. While I work on the cause (bad form) they have been really helping me a lot, and reduce the pain and swelling; I ran most of a 5k with some on, and had no trouble with my shins at all. :)
I don't think they'll help just because, and I'd avoid buying a lot of expensive accessories unless you need it. Springing the extra for a properly fitted pair of running shoes is about the best thing you can do. Anything else is likely unnecessary for most people.
