What matters is the intensity with which you ride (ie. the combination of speed and resistance), not what type of ike it is.
While you will use your core muscles more to stay upright and balanced on an upright bike, this is pretty insignificant compared with if you are truly pedalling hard, as against just cruising along.
Use your heart rate or Rate of Perceived Exertion as a guide to how hard you are working. If it is up, then the activity really doesn't matter.
