Panam87,
Would you still need to wake up that early if you did a shorter workout? For instance, I just tried a 30 minute run first thing in the morning, so I only woke up 45 min earlier that I would have previously. If you woke up at 6am, could you fit in a 20-30 minute walk, jog, whatever and still be able to leave at 7:30?

Sometimes we get caught up in the idea of doing our super long workouts, but adding a little extra in the morning is better than nothing.

I found if I have to get up at 4:30 to do it, I usually didn't make it (I did years ago on a regular basis). But I am out for summer vacation now so I can do it when I wake up before eating breakfast.

I guess I'm like some people some days my get up and go is great and others not so great but I just feel once I get going I am fine.

The point is I get up look in the bathroom mirror and just say " You can do it, your worth it! "

I will continue to strive for the best everyday I breathe.

I am the odd one out then - I just cannot function without my 2 pots of tea.
When i was working and had to leave for early shift (nurse) at 6am I simply put alarm on an hour early.......
still same - very grumpy and muddle-headed if not 'teed up'.
In retirement and post injury i do find it is a big treat for me (my favourite really) tea and web (struggling) and mail and newspapers, and anything I can muddle through when I can get on here.
I think about the day, problems and solutions, priorities, memories, and plan and my head gets in a space 'to do'.
I also like then, perhaps, to defy myself and expectations of myself to say to my other half - it is a lovely day NOT RAINING (well, this is ireland!) and if we dive out you could get us to the beach even for 20 mins to get good air and walk a little, enjoy the lovely view - he loves it! emoticon

Wow! I must admit, I didn't think this post would go as far as it has! Thanks for the feedback everyone! So far, I'm doing early morning workouts on the weekends. Lately my dog has been waking up around 6:30am so I guess that's plenty motivation to get up! Plus we both get a workout, which is an added bonus. I haven't incorporated a morning routine during the week yet because waking up at 5am to workout then heading to work at 7:30am seems a bit daunting to me, especially sitting at a desk all day, I'm afraid I'll fall asleep lol. Maybe I'll try it once a week and see how it goes, or go for a walk/light jog instead of the gym.

I live in Canada's north, so the sun is rising earlier and earlier. It would be great to catch some of those morning rays on a walk!

I love it, sleeping in your workout clothes. I used to dress my kids in their school clothes at night to get them going faster in the am. Now they have all kinds of fashion/food/homework/unpredictable crisis in the morning and mine is chaos around theirs

I sleep in my work out clothes, and arranged my schedule so that I have to take the kid to early band, then it's just a short hop to the gym. I have a partner who depends on me, plus the kid needing to get to school.

I kind of tell myself that- "Well, I'm up anyway..."
Lately, I've been setting out my workout clothes, so I just wake up and crawl into them, splash my face with water and walk out the door. I don't actually want to be out there until a good song starts and I start running toward the morning sun... Then, I'm just really thankful that I got up and out!!

I was a competitive swimmer for 20 years and HAD to be up for 6am practice at least 5 days a week. When I "retired" and no longer had to get up that early, I slowly developed an inability to easily get up in the morning. I guess after years of never sleeping in I now relish the idea.

But there are times when I either DO need to get up or I really want to. For instance, it's much easier in summer when it's light out, the weather is beautiful and things feel at peace. That's what gets me out of bed in summertime. Winter is a bit harder, especially on days I have to go to work afterwards. What I've started doing is getting up on my days off (yes I know it sounds crazy) to either walk the dog with a friend or even do a run. The great thing is that before the day usually even begins for everyone else you are done with your workout AND because you have the day off can take a long hot shower, maybe even crawl back into bed to read a good book and doze for a little while. After doing that a few times, it may be easy to do it on work days, maybe slowly starting with 1 day and then 2 and so on.

I still struggle, but it's a suggestion. Also, planning your morning (getting your workout clothes ready, you lunch etc) really helps to minimize the amount of stuff you need to do AFTER you work out.

I know that I need to start waking up early to exercise but I've really been resisting it. When I was in law school and studying for the bar exam I would exercise in the afternoon and I was in the best shape of my life. Now that I'm working full time it's really impractical for me to leave the office in the afternoon to work out and I'm usually too tired by the time I finally get home. The morning is really the only practical time to do it. I have never been a morning person and it usually takes me at least 30 minutes to become functional after waking, but I know I just have to get over it. If I can get through law school and pass the bar exam on my first try I can surely get up in the morning and exercise, right? emoticon

There are some great suggestions here. I feel a little better knowing that several other people don't exactly enjoy getting up early to work out but do it anyway. It's not like I have to be a morning person; I just need to utilize a little bit of self-discipline... Thanks to all for the great suggestions. I will try to put them to use very soon!

Hi,
I am a mom of 2 elementary school kids and work full time as an attorney. I have always been a consistent exerciser in the evenings but as the kids have gotten older and work busier, I was running out of time to get in a quality workout in the evening.

I alwasy told myself that I would solve many problems by just getting up earlier in the morning and working out. But I was caught in that self-defeating Catch 22 of going to sleep late and then just being too tired in the morning.

Finally, one day three weeks ago, I just decided to get up and do it. I am fortunate in that I have a home gym so I just put the Ken Burns Civil War series on and did it. That night I went to sleep early and got up again. I've done it every day now including the weekends (although on the weekends, I get up a bit later). It's made a big difference for me to get my workouts done in the morning. I won't lie and say I am happy as a clam when I get up, but I can look forward to a nice evening.

I sleep much better now and now have evenings free for getting that work done that I've brought home after the kids go to sleep. I get to bed at a reasonable time and get my 7 hours in. Some days my hubby has to tickle my feet to get me up but it works. I just tell myself that I don't have to have a perfect workout, I just need to get up and do it.

I tried to do this for probably close to 10 years. I can't say what finally made me do it except that daily life and my age (42) dictated that if I was going to remain this size, I was going to need to make a change.

You can do it!! Good luck!

Wherever you go, there you are.

I am not a morning person. After listening to a motivational speaker who stated just 5 minutes of walking each morning adds to your longevity, I started getting up just a little bit earlier to do a 5 minute walk on my treadmill. That was almost a month ago. The first day I did 10 minutes, then I moved to 15, then 25, I am now up to 55 minutes. Each morning when I don't feel like getting up, I tell myself that all I have to do is 5 minutes and each time I go well beyond 5 minutes. I have to say that I am feeling much better these days and I have a lot more energy.

To JRWOLF1, I have only recently been able to walk again on a treadmill. I had a terrible accident over 20 years ago which caused the joint in my hip to deteriorate over time. I have been non-weight bearing for the last almost 15 years. I had a hip replacement almost 2 years ago. Prior to that I was limited to riding my exercise bike which was also difficult to do at times. I was researching getting one of those arm cycling gadgets when my doctor informed me that it was a good time to get a hip replacement. When I was doing physical therapy after my accident, that was the primary excercise they had me do because it gets your heart rate up. I also noticed they use it on the Biggest Loser for people that have lower body injuries. Good Luck and keep up the good work!!

My morning motivation is the fact of having a chance to go on one more day, to enjoy what ever I can do and get most done if not all. I am handicapped they tell me but I can rake in my chair or cut the lawn with my tractor but in the long run I can be happy the Good Lord gave me another day.

I will continue to strive for the best everyday I breathe.

Every morning, before I get out of bed, I do a short meditation.
I begin with "I am not my ..." and fill in whatever negative thing is lurking. It can be my extra weight, my depression, my arthritis, anything. Then as I exhale I repeat simply "I am, I am, I am, I am, I am, I am." Six times.
Then inhale and repeat, "I am not my ..."
I do this at least three times.

I'm not usually a morning person, but I'm currently training for a half marathon and it's really nice to get my runs out of the way first thing. It's also much more comfortable temperature wise to run in the morning. Who knows? Maybe I'll be converted to a morning person by the time the race rolls around...

Hi Goddess, I've been thinking about trying this too.
I do have chronic insomnia and kids I have to get to bed, so if I can't get enough sleep, getting up early is counter productive.
I'm just starting this Spark People thing, and I'm trying to set realistic goals for myself. I think that getting up with the sunrise, even if it's once a week to start, is a good one.
I've spent the past few months staying up late reading (which almost always leads to eating & drinking), and then sleeping late and getting "nothing" done for the day

I've been trying to wake up a little earlier each day until I reach my goal of waking up an hour before sunrise.

The sun is motivating. As well as feeling you've gotten so much done by noon. Usually I sleep late and wake late and feel foggy and lethargic. When I sleep early and wake early I feel more alert and everything has a clarity to it.

It is for wanting that feeling that I feel motivated. I'm still working on waking an hour before the sun. I've made it to 6am most days. But the goal is 4:30am - 4:45am and then WORK OUT!

Being almost 10 weeks pregnant I am too tired to work out after I get home from work.. I am proud of myself for cooking dinner and even more proud if I wash the dishes too or do a load of laundry! ;-)

So my motivation is I know it is the only time that I have to do it when I am not about to fall over from being tired. When I wake up some mornings I don't "feel like it" but most days I do it anyway. Like you said.. the alarm went off and I am awake so.. might as well just do it! You'll be glad you did in the end. The rest of the day seems to be brighter. Good luck!

HII !!! the emoticon is still out. I get up about 11:55 pm or so. I use to be a security guard and my Mom told me when I was born July 26, 1940 I was born at 10:15 pm. So, that makes me a night owl. Can't stop a "good thing". Have a " good night".

You are definitely not alone! It seems like I haven't been a morning since my babies were born lol. The only mornings I would be up and functioning early were my work days. If it was one of my off days, I'd get up to get the kids up, ready for school and drop them off. Now you would think since I've been up for an hour now anyway I would be set to get my workout in and proceed with my day. Nope, not me! I'd slide right back into bed and set like 4 alarms all within 15 minutes of each other then finally get up when the last one went off. Pathetic I know, smh.

2 months ago I started making myself get back up a half hour earlier than I normally would have. I'd have my coffee check the computer and so on then do my workout. I shortened the amount of time that I would go back to sleep for by 15-20 minutes each week and now after I get the kids to school I lay back down for a half hour and by then I am wide awake and actually looking forward to working out, weird I know :) hopefully I'll get to the point where I just stay up!! But at least this is a huge improvement than where I was at a few months ago.

My advice would be to figure out about what time you are usually out of bed on the average day. Now, commit to your friend to go walking around that time at first so you only have to get up maybe 20 minutes earlier than you're used to. Then you can move up the times each day or week or however works for you. Also, as others have said, I have to stop talking it over in my head. As soon as I start to actually think about the action, my mind is already made up and I'm under the covers! One more thing, I leave my blinds partially open so when I wake up the first thing I see is sunshine ;) best of luck, you can do it!

SparkPeople !! This is when I am "motivared at "13". I get up t between 12-1 am exercise till 3:30 am and then walk until 5am. I normally do 10, 630 steps during that time. But now that the weather is "beautiful" I rack up sometimes 22,000 steps a day now. My emoticon are waiting for me, emoticon good everybody for there is always tomorrow.

grandbaby been so sick so busy i really did not realize this week end was Mothers day .

I never had my mom as my dad stole sis and i when i was three sis was six. I never saw her again.

This was in the years before the state got involved in child custody. Possession was they called it

nine tenths of the law. So dad up and took us from up north we lived to florida.

Over the years he hid us several times our mom came to try to find us.

Dad never wanted us and we ended up with many strangers before we settled in with my granny

A mom is not someone who gives birth.

A mom is someone who cares out of love for a child not out of obligation.

A mom heart is with that child every second and will be with her last breath.

I tried to be a good mom to my one child and i am trying to be a better gamma to my

grandbaby.

Dont buy your mom a gift and feel you did what she wants

Just call her or be with her if you can that is what she wants

Things will never be recalled in memory like moments you shared

I know i never got those moments

Gather yours while you can

Happy Mothers Day to My Monkey

Your loved T F F T

iF YOUR NOT HAPPY TRY TO AT LEAST MAKE SOMEONE ELSE HAPPY. THEN YOU CAN SAY, I LIVED TODAY.

I am not a morning person, BUT I have 3 kids all involved in after school sports which takes up most of my evenings when I thought I preferred go to to the gym. I work full time and some days I am lucky to get home by 8pm after running running running from sport to practice to game! I switched my routine around back in March as I was unable to get to the gym and I was too tired the nights I could go! SO quickly the reward of being done with my workout not worrying or making excuses that I don't have to go was eliminated by going after the kids got on the bus and before work started. I sleep in my gym clothes sometimes and pack my bag the night before so i can get there and get done in a timely manner, shower and get into work at a reasonable time! I am lucky and have a flexible schedule, but I have eliminated the excuses and I am getting to the gym 5 days a week!

I too struggle with the AM getting moving thing. I am always up, but find that I piddle around the kitchen making coffee, checking facebook, or what ever until it's too late to get a good workout in and it's time to get ready and go to work. I do find that when I stop myself from the time wasters and the internal arguments of should I or shouldn't I work out this morning, I tend to just get it done. So, when I get out of bed, I let the dog out, stumble to the coffee pot, get a shot of caffeine and then I commit. It's all a brain game after all, just decide and do it.

Try breaking it down. Forty-five minutes might be a long time to start doing a new exercise every day. You might be "hot doggin'" it.

Try 10 to 15 minutes in the morning or at least some stretching and scrunches to get you in the habit. Also, a morning walk is nice, even if it's a short one. I find it gets my day off to a good start.

I am a solid night owl and have a really hard time getting up in the morning. So I usually work out in the evening. The problem with that, of course, is sometimes I run out of time with all the other things that I need to do. I'd like to get up early and work out first thing to get it over with... but I realize that it's just not likely to happen.
