KATIBUG49, I to loved the idea that it was planned out for me, it now literally takes me forever, And when I used to tell people about Sparkpeople, I would say there is a place where you can go and it will tell you what to do everyday!! Now i do not tell to many people.

Although I am using the new tracker, I prefer the old. I'm hoping that SparkPeoplle will improve the new, since it's here to stay.

Hopefully someone is reading all the different complaints to try to improve the areas that are lacking or cause more frustration than anything else.

I came on here to see if anyone else was having a problem with the new fitness tracker. There were many. I have been a faithful SP user for years. Not so much anymore. If it is not broken, don't fix it. There have been many sites that have similar features recruiting me to join, but I have resisted because I loved this site so much. It is still good and it has helped me a others a lot, but I will be searching for somewhere else to track my fitness. That was my biggest use of SP. I am very disappointed with the change.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

I'm sorry I'm not more help. If clearing your cache and cookies fixed the problem, then it sounds like an issue with your computer since we haven't been able to replicate the issue on our end.

Well Coach Jen,
I have cleared the caches and cookies, and it accepted a workout. But there must be something else--unless I have to clear it every day. I am having the same problem repeatedly.
If this doesn't get fixed, I'll stay with the site until I meet my SparkAmerica yearly goal. Then I'll be searching for a site that really keeps a continuous log of my activity. Thank you for trying to help my situation.

I have a question about tracking exercises that don't use hand or bar weights--push ups, sit ups, yoga, etc. What are we supposed to put in the weight section there? It won't let you put 0 so I've been putting 1. It kind of seems like your current weight would be the correct choice but I don't know.

I also DO NOT like the fitness tracker anymore, before it helped me to know what to do. I don't like that we have to search, it keeps me from exercising. Before it would list things for me to do & then I could do them. Is there anyway to get back tot he old way? I really liked having it planned for me. emoticon

I do not like the new fitness tracker. It is not as easy to use as the old fitness tracker. But I did scroll back far enough to find the list of strength training exercises that I did and copied them. I now have them marked in my favorites, so when I do my exercises all I have to do is go to favorites and check them off to get credit for that day. It is a nuisance doing it this way, but so far I have found that is the only thing that is working for me. If you use the copy exercises button at the bottom of the fitness tracker, you can copy the exercises you did that day to another day.

sometimes to see the new tracking information, I have to hit the reload button. Especially if I track from anywhere but the "my trackers" pulldown.

I just entered a walk, being sure to hit "add". As always, it showed as recorded until I left the fitness page and came back. Now it only shows strength training I did earlier in the week.

Hi Darcie

I checked your account, and you'll see for today I searched for walking, clicked on the 2.5 mph entry and then entered the amount of time and clicked to add it to the tracker. It showed up, so I'm not sure what could be going wrong when you try to enter something. Maybe you could try again, making sure you click the "add" button at the end?

When I click on the activity, I put in the minutes and calories, and it says it is recorded. But when I revisit the page later, it shows no cardio has been done. So my workout tracker shows that I still have all these calories left to burn, which have already been done.

It should track any activity you do in the same way. When you do a search for your cardio activity, click on it to add to the tracker and add your minutes, what happens?

My problem seems to differ from the rest. The first time I used the new tracker, it allowed me to record my cardio(done on a health rider)and maintained the info as part of the day's calories burned. Since then, the tracker only retains the strength-training exercises I record. Any cardio I record is lost. It looks like I'm not doing any cardio--just ST. I feel like I'm not meeting my goals even though I an still trying to maintain the same level of cardio I committed to doing. Can my page be reset in some way so that it will keep the record of my calories and minutes from cardio?
HELP! I'm quickly losing motivation!

Another issue I have is that on the new fitness tracker the daily mileage is no longer displayed. I know all exercise is now combined in one area, but mileages are being accumulated since the weekly and yearly mileage is displayed. If I take more than one walk a day (which I sometimes do) I enter the time and mileage of each walk seperately, but if I want to know what my daily mileage is I now have to keep track somewhere else. If it was not for my fitness streak and Spark America I'm not sure I would use the fitness tracker at all any more.

Coach Jen,
Thank you for your feedback, but support@sparkpeople.com does not come up when I put this in the url bar. Is there another way to get my past information? My weekly goals for minutes and calories burned were also changed. Ready to give up on fitness page. I have now spent far more than an hour just hitting links and looking for help to no avail. At least the new nutrition planner had a link to the old one to ease the transition. I really resent this and am very discouraged.

Not meaning to get stuck on one subject, but I noticed something about the quick track - it is not displayed on the new fitness tracker (because it doesn't have calories) but shouldn't it be included in the daily and weekly fitness minutes on the page? Currently it is not. Won't that skew the total minutes and possibly any streaks?

I just entered it on the new tracker so I would not double up. I'll recount to make sure. I can delete if I did make a mistake.
On trips, I'll just use the Quick tracker and sync my steps when I return.
Thanks,

Vickie,

Thanks for the feedback.

Kay,

When using Quick Track it is important to only track fitness activity in one place. You can track in Quick Track OR your myFitness page (strength exercise or calorie burned tracker), but not both. You don't see that activity show up on the fitness page, but if you look at your SparkAmerica fitness minutes, you should see that you got the credit there.

I have a few more issues with the new fitness tracker.

1. There was now warning at all that they were going to switch over permanently to the new tracker. I have noticed that on other changes they have done. They allow time to get used to the new but then for those still using the old never give a head's up that they will be discontinuing the old.

2. The "Map Your Route" button used to be right above the cardio so why can't it be above the My Exercises instead of below? Also it would be nice if mapped routes could be added to favorites (if one route is used often) instead of having to go to two other pages.

3. The quick track doesn't show up because it doesn't use the calories burned - SO WHAT?? Someone just starting out may need the encouragement of seeing the activity and the fitness minutes they have done. I agree that SP seems to be catering to those who already have it together and not to those who are struggling or are new.

Kay,

If you're putting minutes in the Quick Tracker, that should translate over to your fitness minutes.

AT,

If you email support@sparkpeople.com, they have a tool that can put your old groupings into your new tracker.

I don't think it will show up on the fitness page (b/c it doesn't have calories burned associated with it), but it will count towards your fitness minutes.

You can still add fitness minutes to the Quick Tracker, you just have to do it from your Start page now instead of the tracker.

Can they add the quick tracker to the new tracker? That's what I use on trips in the fitness rooms. It is easier to enter it on the old tracker on the quick fitness than writing it all down and entering it when I return.

If someone needs exercises for strength training, you can always use the workout generator. This tool is available under the Fitness section of Articles and Videos. I know it's not quite the same, but it will design a program for you based on your specifications:

I can't find a spark america fitness minutes tracker unless I use my iphone.

so frustrating for when I do exercises that aren't traditionally strength training and isn't cardio.

When you add activities in the mileage tracker, it counts calories burned.

If the idea is to use either the milage tracker, or the regular tracker how are people who have set their goals based on milage supposed to "get calorie credit" for their calories burned?

Sparkpeople is a free site, meaning that I don't physically pay to use it. But it is not a charity site, it is a for-profit business. The employees are paid, not volunteers. Spark uses our numbers and information to earn money. Fine, I can deal with that.

Here are my issues with the new fitness tracker

1.Spark advertises a personalized fitness plan, that is not an option anymore, as far as I can tell

2. The new tracker might be more accurate for people who have everything under control and know what they are doing. It does not help beginners or those who are not disiplined enough to choose their exercises on their own (if they were, they probably don't need to be here that badly). It would be frustrating to people who don't know where to start (at least it would have been for me)

3. There are many sites that you can track your exercises on. Spark has lost one of the things that made it unique.

I assume this new tracker won't change for the "few" people who don't like it. Some of us will learn to like it , I guess. But I needed to vent over this. Hopefully Spark will help us out by adjusting it a bit to make it easier for the non-exercise enjoyers to use.

Success consists of a series of little daily victories.

I don't like the new fitness page which is why I was not using it. I liked having the cardio and strength seperated but most of all the new page DOES NOT display any information entered in the Quick Track. If you enter something in the quick track it looks like no fitness was done or at least it doesn't display. I track time when out walking my dog, but we don't walk a set route and I don't have (nor want) a pedometer, but I do keep track of the time and since I don't know what mileage is I use the quick track for that.

If I walk a route that I have mapped I enter it through the maps, but if I do both in one day, which almost always happens, I want both times showing up!!!!!!

And I mentioned the quick track not showing up back when the new page showed up but I see it hasn't been added.

Coral,

I think the idea is that you'd use either the mileage tracker or the regular tracker, but not both. Both count towards your calories burned goals, so it's just a matter of preference which one you use.

To all,

I appreciate your feedback and will pass your comments along.

I can tell you what is wrong with the mileage tracker. When you add an exercise, say walking or running for 12 minutes/mile, the system does not add that to the mileage tracker. So I have to add my miles to the tracker first, then the system puts in that I was "walking for 13 mins/mile" which is so far from the truth it's not funny. I then have to delete that entry and go back to the fitness tracker and put walking 10 minutes at 17 mins/mile and running 30 mins at 12 mins/mile. Otherwise my calorie counts are waaaaay off. It's a hassle!

But again, PCOLAGATOR, that is not the point. IF I am doing the same set of exercises frequently, but I'm not.

And you're right, there is a lot of good done with the new tracker, and I'm sorry I didn't make mention of it in previous posts about the change. When this thing came out back in June, I was excited for about ten seconds, because the nutrition tracker had been such an improvement. Only ten seconds, though, because then I actually attempted to use it, but I love that ST calories can be tracked, and change in weight, and reps, and sets, and time. In the past, I just made sure to do the exercises five minutes at a time.

BUT I don't even get that far when using it, because the functionality I use to create my workouts is GONE. I wish I could, but I can't. So then there's the virtual schlepping, which isn't an improvement. I'm just frustrated, because I'm not going to change how I do things just because my tool changed. I will not work for a tool, free or otherwise. A tool is supposed to work for the user, not the other way around.

I am glad that it works for some (many? most?) people, and that they do like it, and I'm sure there was this much crying and whining before with the nutrition tracker change, and it will die down eventually, but as far as I remember, the new nutrition tracker didn't take away any functionality. This one does. I mean, it is still a free tool, but the Quick Track now will suffice for me. At least it will make me expand my ST horizons.

I'm 4'10.5". A normal BMI for my height tops out at 119.

I guess I'm one of the only people that thinks the new tracker is much easier to use

The old tracker was automatically counting each strength exercise as 5 minutes. If you don't want to take the time to figure out how long it's actually taking you then you can use that same time. It's also fairly ease to create a grouping if you're doing the same set of exercises frequently so you don't need to individually search for each one every time

Hi, Jen,

Well, there are 700 comments on the blog about the change and no responses to any of the questions, so let's estimate, say, 500 members probably don't feel heard. I mean, I know it's not much when you've got tens of millions of members, but still, there are myriad issues mentioned there, and not all of them are the hysterics of people averse to change, so it'd be nice if that were recognized. Someone ought to be reading and taking note, so this tracker is actually an improvement.

The fact that I can search for the exercises isn't the point. I know I CAN search (assuming I even know the name of the exercise...not all of us who use(d) this function do). I don't WANT to. I want to do what I could with the old, allegedly-less-improved tracker. I select my exercises from the demos. I don't track them after I do them. Now, I have to (virtually) schlep to the demo, find it, copy the name, (virtually) schlep back, paste it in the search, and then finally add the exercise. How is that an improvement? How can something be considered improved, when positives have been taken away? It's patronizing. The blog saying "We're sure you'll love this new, IMPROVED tracker!" was a little patronizing, and saying, "Oh, you'll get used to it," while true, is also patronizing.

I get it. You guys are dealing with millions of people, and we complain, and it's stupid to complain, because the site is free, so why can't we just suck it up and get used to our new, free tool? And I'm not going to puff up my chest and say, "Then I'm not coming here anymore!" like people in the blog are doing, because frankly, if I were any of you, I wouldn't care, so I don't expect y'all to care if I were to leave, either. Anyway, I'm not leaving. But I also am only going to use Quick Track to track minutes now, because I find these changes so inhibiting to my ability to track, and I find that very off-putting. The complaint I have seems like it would have a very easy fix, and I'm not the only one with it, and fixing it WOULD actually be an improvement, so I'll wait for it to be fixed. I'm just really surprised no one has yet after 9 months. I mean, com'on.

Anyway, thanks again for getting back so quickly. I have faith that SP is one of the few companies around being run by smart people, which is why I'm so gobsmacked by this tracker and am so certain the very obvious non-improvements with it will be fixed, because you all do work hard to improve the site.

I'm 4'10.5". A normal BMI for my height tops out at 119.

I'm sorry if anyone feels like we're not listening to their concerns. We take everything into consideration when making these decisions, and knew that there could be some upset members when we made the change. Like I said before, no matter what changes we make on the site, some people like them and some don't. We are just making changes that we feel benefit the overall good and functionality of the site.

I'm not sure what the issues are with mileage. I've not heard any concerns about that. As far as the exercise demos go, a lot of the exercises are in the tracker if you search for them (or something similar comes up that you can add instead.)

Thanks,

Coach Jen

Fair enough re: resources. I very much dislike this tracker, too. And I've given it many tries, especially during my "SparkPeople Workout" phase. If I wanted to track those, I had to use the new one to do it.

But what I don't understand is, SP has had 9 months to work out some of the very clear limitations this new "improved" tracker has in comparison to the old tracker. I know that I would be perfectly content with this one and be willing to get used to it, if I could just add exercises from the demos like I used to be able to do. Other people are having issues with things like mileage....I don't understand all the issues, but SP certainly should and hasn't done anything with them, as far as I can see.

I'm posting this here, because it appears to be the only place where anyone on SP is actually responding to people's concerns. Thank you, Jen.

I guess I am in the minority. Getting a reminder essentially from myelf saying that maybe I should do some strength training is not the same as looking at my exercise page that says "you need to do this". The old one worked well for me a couple of years ago. Trying to go without the structure it provided has let me gain back almost half the weight. I was just getting into the swing of things when this was changed. Very demotivating for me.

Also the front page of spark that people who haven't joined see says "personalized fitness program" isn't really relevant anymore

Could there at least be something that reminds you that it is a strength training day or a cardio day? If I remembered to do this without the computer reminding (guilting) me into doing a workout, I wouldn't need to be here.

Hi everyone

Change is never easy, but I'd encourage you to stick with it and I think you'll get used to this version of the tracker. If you're not sure how to use something, check out our tutorial video:

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/videos-detail
.asp?video=73

You won't get workouts directly added to your tracker, but you can still get workouts on the site and add them. The Workout Generator can do that for you :

I seem to have been forced on to the "new" fitness page today. DO NOT LIKE. Seriously, I really don't like the way this page works; I found the "old" page to be easier, more user friendly, and just all-around better, and I liked being able to stay on it. Please bring back the option to keep that as one's default. (I don't understand why there aren't enough "resources" to keep both. Hope you listen to your unhappy user base.)

I am with the others....not a happy camper tonight. I don't keep track of how long I do each ST exercise. I track the amount of time totaled. I tracked some things tonight but once I hit the save button I could not see what ST exercises I had put in to double check. I hope my learning curve is fast....sigh........ emoticon emoticon

so if I am understanding what I see, the fitness tracker no longer gives us a set of strength exercises. Does spark coach have this option to have a generated workout?

Thanks for the feedback. We moved most people to the new fitness tracker last June, and since then have been supporting both versions. We don't have the resources to continue supporting both forever, so that's why we've moved everyone to one version.

This tracker does account for calories burned through strength training. You'll notice when you track activities that the number of calories burned is pretty small. So although it's difficult to estimate this number, the data it's giving probably won't make a huge difference in your overall calories burned (unless you're doing strength training for very long sessions each time.)

Hope that helps,

Coach Jen

I haven't thought about that. I was curious about the fact that this new tracking is showing calories burned when doing strength training. That bothers me because I don't know if I believe that anyone can really track the amount of calories burned through strength training. I'll know tomorrow about the cardio calorie tracking (do my cardio in the morning).

I did not notice a change in the tracker. I will go back and see but I am sure it is accurate. The old one was too high for the type of exercises, so I hope this one is more accurate.

I am just adding my 2 cents to yours.

i have tried this new tracker a couple of times and have never liked it. I always went back to the old one. I was a bit shocked today when I noticed I don't have a choice anymore.

Now that we have no choice but to accept the new fitness tracker, it is telling me that I'm not eating enough for the calories burned (for yesterday - I did cardio and strength). I'm not worried about yesterday since I can't do anything about it.

I copied some strength training exercises to other days this week and then tried to remove them but it won't let me. It's telling me that I can't remove it once I've checked it off. How is this possible when it's for a future date. Also, how is it possible to accurately track the calories from lifting weights/strength training? And, how can you give the time if you do one set of several exercises before doing the second set? I do this for the ones that require the dumbbell. So, does this mean that I have to quit doing my exercises like that?

As a side note, I don't care for this new way of tracking fitness and there is no button for me to switch to the old one. Just felt like giving my 2 cents.
