The knee is a complicated joint, so while it could be PF syndrome, it could also be other things causing the problem. It would be difficult for us to speculate on what is safe to try and what you should avoid without knowing for sure.
I wouldn't do any kind of exercise that causes pain or discomfort. I don't think it would hurt to see a doctor there, and if you aren't comfortable with their advice, you can wait until you return to the US. But 8 months is a long time to wait if this becomes a lingering problem that keeps you from exercising at all.
The good news is that when it comes to weight loss, the majority of your progress is going to come from diet, not exercise. So even if you can't exercise at all, you can still lose weight consistently if you're tracking your food and staying in your recommended calorie and nutrient ranges.
