I took a 60 minute Strength and Core class today. I take this particular class twice a week. Unfortunately, this class is only offered three times a week and one of them is at 5:30 a.m. I can't go at that time, so I just stick with the other two classes.

Please Google You Tube for videos of the two exercises and also a simple bridge. These exercises have been used for literally centuries by wrestlers in India as a part of their training programmes. Matt Furey in his "Combat Conditioning" book has photos and descriptions of all of them under the Royal Court.

As a trainer if one of my clients takes more than 30 to 40 minutes to complete an effective workout I have them reassess what they are doing and how they are doing it. Are they substituting quantity for quality? Are they doing multiple exercises to work the same muscle groups? Are they spending unnecessary time doing isolation exercises for small muscle groups?

More is just more, better is best.

Normally, I do ST 3x a week:

Full body Sunday (usually a circuit workout)
Upper body only Tuesday (purely ST)
Lower body only Thursday (purely ST)

Cardio on Monday
Yoga / Pilates on Wednesday
Cardio on Friday (this is usually an interval workout)

However... I'm training for a half-marathon right now so that's changed things up and I'm only hitting ST 2x a week as my half-marathon training trumps everything else, and my really LONG mileage days are on the days I'd normally do full body strength training.

I'm in agreement - quality beats quantity and it is VERY true that you don't need to waste an hour at the gym getting it all done when you can do it all in a half hour so long as you keep the weights heavy and the form good.

Even on my full body ST days, it's only about a half hour as I'll mix things up and do a circuit type of workout on those days, so the rest of the time is cardio, jumping and running around like a maniac.

I do not like to do JUST cardio (like a half hour or more) before a ST workout. I want my energy focused on those pure ST days. Only cardio I'll do is a 5-10 minute warmup on the elliptical and that's it... just a warmup.

Need to get back to the gym? Try this, 25 Hindu squats, 10 Hindu pushups then a 60 second simple bridge. Rest 2 minutes and repeat. go for a third if you can. Alternate workout is a countdown workout, 8 kettlebell swings, 8 squat thrusts, 7 kettlebell swings, 7 squat thrusts working your way down to 1 kettlebell swing and 1 squat thrust. If you do not have a kettlebell use a dumbbell with a two handed grip.

My understanding is that one should do a minimum of 2 days a week of full body ST. If it works for you, 3 days is probably "optimum". I personally alternate between 2 & 3 depending on my schedule.
-- And as SergeantMajor indicates, hours of cardio is NOT indicative of "doing a body good!"

The original post in this discussion was a question about how much strength training to do but it has wandered off into a discussion of what individuals do for their programmes and no longer is addressing the question. Just to bump the original question I will repeat my recommendation.

Thirty minutes of full body and compound movement exercises using challenging weights three alternate days a week will suffice for fat loss and fitness. The weights used should not allow the proper completion of more than 8 or 10 repetitions per set for three sets of each exercise. Intensity is more productive than duration and quality is more effective than quantity.

The same thirty minutes is adequate for a quality cardio workout if some form of interval training is used. Long duration steady state cardio workouts according to the current research cause stress resulting in the body producing cortisol which is a fat retaining hormone.

Go to the gym, crank down and get your workout done and go enjoy the other things in your life which being fit allows you to participate in.

In my opinion as an experienced trainer and long time weight trainer doing a workout in excess of 30 minutes is unnecessary for fat loss or general fitness. Six full body or compound movement exercises are all that is needed, doing more is adding isolation exercises or multiple exercises for the same muscle groups which is not necessary or productive. Exchange quality for quantity and intensity for duration to get the maximum results.
