You can lose weight without doing high intensity exercise. I have RA and I have successfully done so in the past.
As far as weights go, I would just start with some really light ones and work up as you can tolerate. Another thing I really enjoy is pilates, which helps your core strength and gives you balance.
You CAN do this. Just remember that for those of us with pain diseases, "pushing through the pain" can be very foolish. I can generally tell whether it's "good pain"-- the productive kind that is just the result of exercise-- or "bad pain"-- the kind that comes from my disease. Trying to push through the bad pain will generally land me in bed for a couple of days. You have to be very in tune to your body and what's normal for you.
The truth is, though, that you can effectively burn calories and lose weight with low impact exercise. Watch your calorie intake and be gentle with yourself and you can do it! And so can I! :)
