Mine seem to be synching only sporadically lately. Glad its not just me. I've already had to have one replacement.

Ok I see that I'm not the only one who realized that info from the FitBit hasn't been syncing automatically. I thought it was something I did and have disconnected and reconnected it trying to resolve the issue. I'm hoping this will be fixed soon.

I'm having the same problem. It just started in the last couple of days. It does seem to be getting the food just not the exercise. It does update it I click the sync for the day button but I've never had to do that before. Was there an update?!

Fitbit doesn't seem to be updating/syncing regularly or accuately from my nutrition page here. The transfer of data from my fitbit to sparkpeople is super accurate and timely though. Am I doing something wrong?

May not be helpful to everybody, but I use the app on my iPad... I keep it on my nightstand anyway. So when I'm going to sleep you can click sleep, and when you wake up you can click awake. I've forgotten to click awake before, and it lets you go back nd adjust the time that you actually get up. Not sure if this works the same if you don't use an iPad?

I'm going to try to get a hold of someone today about replacement - glad they have such great service reviews!

Sleep Tracking....

Anybody notice that their Flex accidentally goes into sleep mode when doing other things that might tap it? It's odd, at night when I go to bed it generally takes 2 or 3 attempts to get it into sleep mode but while awake a slight tap might put it there. It happened to me yesterday and I didn't even realize it until I logged on to FitBit this morning. It said I logged over 11 hours of sleep and was awoken more than 50 times. The odd thing is that it put me in bed at 2:04 in the afternoon so 11 hours would have brought me to awake around 1:00 AM. At that time I was definitely asleep and in bed but it brought itself out of sleep mode. Does anybody have any tricks or advice to offer so that this doesn'' happen again?

Wow, Buffalo you got through by phone? When I was having issues with mine last month they did replace it but everything had to be done through e-mail. As a matter of fact, there was a statement on their website that said they do not provide telephone support. Either way, I have to say that FitBit's customer service is top notch.

I bought a Fitbit and loved it! I used it every day at work, when exercising, and when I was sleeping. It seems to have shorted out though - I've got it on my To Do List to call the manufacturer... anyone have this issue?

@MEREDI The Fitbit tells you how many calories you have burned that day, not just the ones you burn during your steps. You burn calories just by sitting---all of the functions of your body take calories too!

When you sync your fitbit to your Spark page, it will show you how many calories the steps themselves have used.

If you have formed the habit of checking on every new diet that comes along, you will find that, mercifully, they all blur together, leaving you with only one definite piece of information: french-fried potatoes are out. ~~Jean Kerr

I just got my fitbit flex yesterday! I think it is doing my calories wrong!
This morning mine says I walked 143 steps and I burned 311 calories! Could that be right??? It seems like I burned to many calories!

I sync mine with Spark and just record my steps, which works well for me because walking and stair-climbing are my main forms of exercise. If I do 20 minutes of upper body work, though, I record that seperately, so I get credit for exercise that isn't step-based.

Hi, I just noticed your post, so if you don't already have the answer: I have a force so I'm thinking it might be the same way. On the fitbit app on my phone, I click on "account;" scroll down to silent alarms and click set new alarm.

I hope this helps.

I found the problem. First I had to link my accounts. Once I did that, the box that you were talking about appeared. I never knew I could do this. This is a great option. If anyone needs the directions on how to link accounts, I found the directions on one of the technical pages. Once you get there, the directions are posted and you just need to click on the link and it will bring up information to connect the two accounts.

Now my tracker shows up on my fitness page. This is great.

I have a fitbit Ultra and I really love it. I feel silly I just can't find it, but I trying to find the box that says to sync to fitbit. I went to the Fitness Tracking Page, I am on today's date. I just don't see the box. If anyone can help guide me.

I'm sure it's right in front me.

Thanks

Patty

Funny thing, mine was synching automatically but not since I commented here that it was. I wonder if one or the other of the sites is having some sort of an issue, hmmm?

Sami17, I have been able to sync for previous days.

- Go to the Fitness Tracking page.
- Change the date to whatever day you want.
- There is a small box that says "Fitbit Tracker"
- On the right side of the Fitbit Tracker box is a link that says "Sync Fitbit for Today"
- When you click the Sync link, it should update for that day.

I was able to sync the whole first week of January this way, going backwards day by day. Hope that helps!

Agreed... I don't think it should be so hard to find out how to link the two. But it seems to work great once you do it. Does anyone know if you can sync the next day if you forget to do it at the end of the day?

For those of you who are looking for the link, I will repost...

I didn't even know we could sync it to spark people. How do we do that? It would be fantastic to be able to do so because fitbit doesn't have to great of a site for the food areas or anything!

After being on "hiatus" from diet and exercising for a month due to a family emergency I am trying to get back "on track". I was walking 4 miles a day and have lost weight on my Tony Gazelle(easy on my bad knees). I treated myself to a Fitbit One and having trouble. I sync it with Spark and set my stride. I am only 4" 11 1/2 ". I just walked 1/2 mile on it...10 minutes. My number went from 900 to 1038 steps on my Fitbit One. But I counted how many "steps" it took. Now on a Gazelle you slide your feet back and forth so I count "a step" as one complete back and forth motion which I took 66 steps per 1 tenth of a mile = 330
steps" for 1/2 mile. ( A person might think of it as 66 steps x 2 since it goes back and forth) Well anyway fitbit has it as only 138 steps instead of 330.

Anyone have any ideas how to keep track...I have always manually entered my miles walked on Spark with minutes and calories burned. When I do that now, fitbit also enters min. and steps walked so I have a overlap even though there steps come up "short". If I don't enter manually I won't get "much credit" for my 4 miles. Then I totally don't understand calories burned 901??? I don't burn that many walking 4 miles!!!

HELP!!!!! I actually walked about 950 miles in 2013. My goal was 1000 until the family emergency!

Thanks, antiquegma

No matter how slow you go...you are miles ahead of those sitting on the couch!

I just got a fitbit flex this week and am loving it. I am finding that it really motivates me and causes me to keep better track of what I am eating, and calories and such! I feel less tired because of the tracking and such. I definitely get more steps in during the day because I am so motivated by the fitbit flex. I love it, and would definitely recommend it!!!

I am confused, was thinking about getting a fitbit, but if I stick it on my shoe, how does it know what my arms are doing, and if I attach it to my upper body somehow, how will it know what my legs and feet are doing?

To put your flex into sleep mode you need to tap it for a couple of seconds until the 2 most outer lights flash. When you wake up in the morniong you will do the same to take it out of sleep mode. Wish I could help with the alarms but I haven't figured that one out either. Did you download the manual? I have, but really haven't had the time to read over it yet?

I'm trying my new Fitbit One and love how small it is.

Plus I'm trying to get out of the Fitbit site because my personal e-mail is being overran with messages.

I've now un-joined the two chat sites and un-friended my ladies; hope that's the solutions

Thanks for posting that link! I recently returned to SP and have been searching for how to link my new fitbit to SP. It used to be really easy, but not any more. I wonder if they're trying to downplay Fitbit since they have their ow SP activity tracker? Not that I mind--I'm all for capitalism!--but it was a bit confusing that I couldn't find what I needed.

A year from now, would you rather be saying "I'm glad I did", or "I wish I had" ?

Can someone help me get started. I just got a Fitbit Zip. I installed. ti on fitbit.com. I am a member of Sparkpeople, but I stopped using it when I was satisfied with my weight. Of course over the holidays, I am now up about 5 lbs., so decided to get a Fitbit and link it to Sparkpeople and starting logging my weight and exercise goals again. I don't know how to link anything to Sparkpeople from Fitbit Zip. Any help will be appreciated.

So now I see the FitBit on my fitness page but not on my nutrition page. Is there a way to link that too?

Not sure why it was so difficult to find instructions to do this.
I tried to do it from the fitbit dashboard as recommended by a previous user but it would only take me to the SP home page.
The link below will allow you to connect SP and FB. You need to be logged into both accounts to do so.
Hope this helps!!

Hi Claire.

I have a FitBit Force and it's great for measuring sleep time. Where I find it falters is in logging Times Awaken and the restless category. If your spouse moves in bed, your dog jumps in bed with you are you suffer an earthquake in your location, it can tally that as a wake time or restless moment for you. ;-)

Hi, I've used my fitbit to log sleep for 7 months now. I love it! I also use the "buzz" alarm to wake up every weekday morning. So much nicer than a blaring alarm clock. emoticon

Trying to decide about buying the Fitbit. I liked the idea of it tracking activity plus sleep since I have sleep problems also. Anyone else use it to track sleep and how it does?

The issue with Sparkspeople using the active and moderately active minutes is that if you've been tracking ONLY your active minutes in SP, your going to have a spike in fitness minutes for your fitness minutes goal and your going to get both fitness trophies and points trophies faster.

My solution is to make my fitness minutes goal for the year much higher as I had it at 1200 fitness minutes per month. SP has added fitness minute trophies beyond the 1000 per month level, so I'll aim for those in the future rather than just the 1000.

My SP points trophies will rack up faster but I'll be at the 50K level in January, so I'll just know that the trophies beyond that point are earned with different criteria.

SP has had a problem forever with adjusting calculations every where when food or fitness information is deleted. I don't use food plans with SP so I rarely delete food entries and if I do, I can go and delete them on FB. I also haven't used SP's calories in/out analysis information, it wasn't useful to me as it was presented, I like FB's approach better. The new SP "START" page may help fix this.

Teremc, I've been getting exercise points. My minutes on my "ticker" are form fitbit as I haven't been logging any exercise on Spark lately. I get an exercise minute per moderately active and very active minute on fitbit. It actually adds up to more than what I use to log on Spark before the sync. It isn't tied to step count though, it is strictly intensity level.

I have put in a request to the help desk, maybe they will be able to help. If the two systems talk to each other, I would like to be able to doo less work.. Also I do a LOT of stairs in my days.. and they usually are like 2-3 flights Less on fit bit than what I think it should be... Either way, I would like to link the accounts.

I originally had mine synced up but then I realized that I prefer to manually enter them in. My fitbit one likes to tell me that I walked more flights of stairs than I normally do (I am up and down stairs a lot at work). This is bc it reads the highway overpasses on my to and from work as stairs walked....and there is no way to put it in "drive mode" of some sort so that it won't record this. I like to be very accurate with things and felt like I was cheating too. So I now, manually enter everything in.

Not sure if anyone else has said this in previous posts but; the fitbit one is different than the zip, as it has an altimeter...which is how it knows when you are walking up the stairs. It's great to have if you are constantly walking up and downstairs all day. Also, it tracks your sleep efficiency which is a neat feature. I love the fact that it accounts for calories your body uses just to sustain itself.
The fitbit one measures activity through the following levels: light, moderate, & very. They are also color coded. Very is green so I shoot for seeing lots of green on my fitbit dashboard. I hope this helps answer some questions!

I am also having an issue linking my fit bit. I have a fit bit one. I have tried 3 different browsers, re-starting my computer.. Using the link from Spark people fit bit challenge page to connect... Using the link from fitbit to connect.. and every single time receive :

"The log in to Fitbit has failed.

Please press the back button on your browser to re-enter the information. Or click here to go back."

I have tried re-setting my password on fitbit and verifying the username/password combo.. and still nothing.. Any advise out there?

Hi Vonn12... sorry I don't have an answer for you on that one! Fitbit support might be the best place to go. They got back to me within 2 days after I emailed them about something.

Catpete... if you go to your "My SparkPoints" page you will see a link under "one time challenges" that says 'connect fitbit to sparkpeople'. Click on the 'connect...' link beside it and it will take you to the place to enter your fitbit account info.

Question for you Fitbit owners. I dropped my fitbit and the back and battery came off. Well I thought that I'd put everything in my pocket. However when I went to put it back together the back was missing. I thought that I would put a piece of tape on the back to hold it together and place it in the holder. NOT. The Fitbit will not come on while holding the battery in place. Is the back needed to make this thing work or is it now broken due to the drop?

Thank you in advance to anyone that can assist me with this.

Maybe I don't understand my Fitbit or the issue ... but I think the calories burned are not just from the exercise itself? For example, when I wake up in the morning and put on my FB, it says 600 calories ... kind of a metabolic baseline? I don't know, I am trying to understand. But I am losing weight ... more than 15 pounds altogether (I joined SP after I lost a few) and I am not tracking my food; I'm just getting lots more exercise than ever (10,000+ day) and learning to listen to what my body wants to eat and when it's full. But I am eating what I like - and not counting or controlling.

Thanks Bunny. I'd like to hear from SP on this issue as well. I love my FB, although it is overestimating my mileage. I think i read that SP uses a BMR based on a daily life activities, not including exercise. If FB is inputting calories burned through BMR plus exercise it is causing SP to grossly overestimate recommended calories with the new system which adjusts the calorie range based on activity.

I walked 3 miles this morning in 50 minutes. (17-18 minute miles.). The rest of my 10,300 steps were not "very active" at all, just walking the hall at work and shopping at WalMart. I've been trying to stay between 1200 and 1500 cals. but SP has my goal for today 1800-2100. (When i go to the FB dashboard it gives me a calorie goal of 1314.)

As an overweight 56 yr. old female, the BMR I calculated is about 1850. That amount of exercise is not going to create enough deficit for me to lose weight if I eat 1800-2100calories.

I was very excited to sync my FB to SP, but the overestimation of calories, as well as the food being double reported to FB if I make changes is a tad bit annoying.

Your life is NOW!

Bunnylamb, I think that is part of what is happening. Fitbit never separates our BMR from activity calories it is just the estimated total for each minute--from our BMR, anything logged and any activity tracked. I have a premium membership on Fitbit and run into the same with the activity calories goal--the goal includes the total calories (including BMR) that are spent active (not sedentary or asleep). In my premium report on Fitbit it doesn't list BMR, it lists the calories I burn when sedentary or sleeping as my "rest calories". At first I found this confusing as my BMR was different every week even when maintaining my weight. Slight digression, but fitbit doesn't separate bmr from activity anywhere I've seen. But Spark can on it's end. Not to bring up other sites, but both Myfitnesspal and loseit do--on those sites the fitbit exercise calories come from the site comparing the fitbit calorie burn to what that site estimates the user would burn at their stated activity level. So for MFP for example, if you are set to sedentary it compares your fitbit burn to what you might burn sedentary (BMR and some activity from a multiplier) and the adjustment is the fitbit overage if there is one so BMR and light activity is excluded. I prefer Spark in a lot of way, but wish they would switch to something more like that. I just switched back to the old Spark method not directly adding fitness calories because it was adding too many calories often ending up with a weight loss allowance that was more than my fitbit estimated calorie burn. My heart rate monitor also includes a portion of BMR in the calorie burn so it isn't an uncommon practice. I think it is more of an issue because fitbit users usually try to be active throughout the day so a lot of incidental activity is counted so there is more opportunity for double counting BMR than if we were just logging specific workouts like we probably did before the sync was available. The activity minutes pulled over are fine for me--it equals the fairly active and very active minutes in the day. Some exercise I use to log would not be counted (i.e. stretching and yoga), and some activity I wouldn't think of logging such as when I march in place during commercials or walking on errands does get counted. But I am pretty active during the minutes that Spark is counting so I have no issue with the exercise minutes, just the exercise calories.

Is it possible that Spark is pulling both the exercise and the regular resting calories burned when it creates its "fitbit entry" when synching fitness?

What I mean is that when you enter a fitness activity right on SP it only enters the extra calories you gained for the exercise (estimated), because the daily BMR calories are not assigned gradually throughout the day, just as one lump sum. However when the fitbit is calculating calories, I think it is including the calories you burned during that time period, both 'resting' and active (because they're not really separate). So... more accurate, but when you bring the fitbit calories to SP, maybe it ends up overestimating because the BMR is being added twice for that period. Does that make sense?

I might be wrong about this, I've only had the thing for a couple of days and I'm not sure I totally understand it yet!

I also have the problem with foods not being updated when changed on Spark. Sorry, but that is a Spark issue. I've tried all the nutrition tracking apps/sites that link with fitbit and Spark is the only one with this particular issue for me. I still like Spark because it logs the individual foods to fitbit (the others don't, they usually do meal summaries) and I like the detailed nutrition data on Spark. I found I need to take time to correct my fitbit food long--it doesn't take long to delete entries. And I found it saves time if I need to change a portion size on Spark to just enter it again and delete the old entry rather than edit it. That way the correct portion is on my fitbit food log--I just need to delete the mistaken. If I edit the quantity, the fitbit portion is just wrong. It can update if I choose "sync foods to fitbit" but then everything is double logged so I have a lot of deleting to do to clean things up. It would be nice if it automatically updated, but right now it isn't set up to do that. When I logged food to Myfitnesspal it actually did update corrected meals--but it only listed a meal summary not the specific foods in my fitbit log. So every system has it's pros and cons. :-)

I have a FitBit, but I did not sync it with Spark People - I just manually enter the amount of time I spent walking and my strength training in my workout tracker each morning.

Hi,I've had a fitbit for three years and also use a heart rate monitor during intentional exercise. I really have not found my fitbit to overestimate at all for specific activities. My fitbit and HRM frequently agree (or are very close) for their calorie burn estimate for step based activities including brisk walking (if brisk enough that my heart rate is elevated), jogging, aerobic dancing with traveling steps, jumping rope, cardio kickboxing and some aerobic drill/bootcamp type workouts. It underestimates usually on non step and resistance activities i.e. cycling, rowing, yoga, dance that involves soft movements and torso isolations rather than steps, step aerobics, and any type of resistance exercise (though my HRM might not be much better with non-aerobic activity). The only activities I've seen fitbit give a higher estimate than my hrm are slower walking (when I am not in my aerobic zones) and when I tried the elliptical machine with no resistance settings (the two devices were close when light resistance is used, but not higher resistance than fitbit underestimates as I would expect).

What I have noticed is the fitness calories that Spark pulls over from fitbit are inflated. This isn't as bad when I manually log exercise on fitbit, but when I don't I end up with a lot of exercise calories added on. The Spark allowance has been higher than my total fitbit calorie burn on most days. For whatever reason, fitbit's calorie burn estimates seem pretty close to accurate for me--I've both lost and maintained weight when I follow it and accurately track my food intake on Spark. I guess I am saying I see the same issue others are seeing, but not for the reasons people seem to think. In my case it isn't necessarily that fitbit is overestimating it is that Spark is pulling too many calories burned over from my fitbit account. I think it is because Spark uses a more generous BMR formula than fitbit uses (my Spark estimated calorie burn ends up hundreds more than fitbit every day if I look at the calorie differential report). It is hard to know if calorie burn estimates are accurate, but my fitbit and hrm estimates are actually more conservative than the Spark activity database (and every online calculator I've seen). For example when I attend a vigorous circuit training class at the gym--my heart rate monitor estimates some thing like 250-299 calories for the hour, fitbit something like 218 calories (it is mostly consists of exercises it doesn't track well), and the Spark database credits me with 485 for an hour of circuit training. I hope Spark is the most correct, lol!, but I usually would log the HRM estimate to my fitbit account and that seems to work well for me when following fitbit's allowance. Following Sparks allowance I would be eating a lot more even logging the lower calorie burn estimate.

I have the same issue with my fitbit as well. I have to go into my dashboard and delete the foods I'd already deleted from Sparkpeople. I wish it would more accurately reflect it. I also agree that it sometimes inflates the calories burnt by a specific activity. I use mine as a guideline and not an absolute. It's hard to get an accurate BMR with these couple of blips in the system.

I sync mine with MyFitnessPal and Sparkpeople but I don't really count the minutes as food I can eat. I just like to know how far I've gone throughout a day. :)

I like my fitibit one too, but there are some slight bumps in the road so far...

I sync the fitbit daily but I find it's overestimating the calories by a lot (as in a gentle 2hr walk = 600 calories burned? I don't think so.) So I edit the calorie information, but then the next day I sync again and it's synched all the past days back to the over-huge calorie estimates. This is throwing off my target eating calorie ranges too, which is frustrating.

The other thing is fitbit taking my food info from sparkpeople, but is including things I had deleted from my daily log (things I accidentally added twice, or planned for but didn't end up eating)... so it's way over-tallying the calories I'm eating on my fitbit dashboard.

Other than that though, I think the step tracker is pretty accurate and I like having it automatically tally. I generally remove the tracker when I'm doing any strength training (pilates, weights) and I manually enter that information on sparkpeople afterward.

I use my Fitbit zip to track walking or jogging etc. I take it off when I bike ride or swim and track those separately into my fitness minutes.

I've never used it on an elliptical but it would track zumba like anything else as you are taking steps. It will measure the intensity by how fast you are stepping.

I've had mine for 6 months now and I love it! It really provides positive motivation and I love checking my dashboard at the end of the day to see what I have done and where I am in my rankings. :)

How does the FitBit work for tracking activities like elliptical or Zumba?
