Most of the Fitbit products can't track cycling or spinning. You have to log that yourself but when spinning what is being tracked?

So I have a question. I take Martial Arts in the evenings. I have always counted those minutes under martial arts on the tracker. Should I no longer count those and just let the fitbit count my steps?

And what about my sit ups and some other cardio.

I have found that it tracks my active minutes -- but it seems to count any movement at all as an active minute. Yep, even walking to the bathroom. I figured this out by looking at my charts from FitBit and comparing the "active minutes" to what Spark told me was active. The only way I could get the numbers to match is if I included any instance on the activities bar chart where the number was above zero!

Here is my experience, and I say this with the caveat of having a FitBit One, not the charge HR: I found that the way that FitBit and Spark communicate with each other, Spark was allowing me WAY more calories than FitBit says I burn. For example, yesterday FitBit showed that I burned 2512 calories. Meanwhile, the way Spark received the "information," Spark told me that I could eat 2154-2504 calories. That would be great if Spark were set to maintenance, but I set it to lose 2 pounds per week! I only want to lose 1 pound per week, but I set it like that so that I'd get an accurate number.. but in reality I only get an accurate number for essentially maintenance. Just compare the numbers yourself, it's possible the Charge HR is more accurate, though I kind of doubt it.

So what I started doing is just looking at what my FitBit says I've burned and subtracting the food I've tracked on SP. I've had it a while so I have a good idea of how many calories I'm going to be burning if I go to the gym, can't get in an extra walk, etc.

Good Morning -

I'm sure this has been explained before, but I was wondering if someone could explain how the Fitbit is logging my exercise on Spark.

I just purchased a Fitbit Charge HR and have it synced to Spark. I see it logging exercise, but I don't understand how it's getting this number from total calories burned on my Fitbit. Does it only log it as "exercise" on my Spark page if it's 10 minutes or more of consecutive exercise, in a certain target heart rate?

I've looked through the message boards, and even Googled this question, but can't find the answer.

Thank you so much for your help!

I am using the Fitbit Surge, which was a birthday present from my husband. It tallies steps, heartbeat, calories burned, miles walked and total floors. Oh, and it gives time. hehe. I love it, I track my exercises like circuit training, boot camp and weights and it gives me total calories burned during the workouts. I sync it with Sparkpeople and Myfitnesspal, although sometimes the numbers are off, like today. I use the app in my IPAD to track my total active minutes and also how my resting heartrate has decreased since starting exercises.

Love my fitbit flex. I don't have it synced as I use my fitness pal primarily for food and exercise tracking and I am on Spark more for community. I add stuff after the fact on spark. I add my steps the following day as a walk at the avg speed. While a pain it is what is motivating me right now

It does pick up movement and counts as steps.

I have found some issues with the CHarge HR and workouts. It works GREAT for walks, runs, any some of my workouts. If I do a strength training DVD I don't always get "active" min logged. I still get calories burned, and steps. Just not "active" min. It depends on if that is important to you. I know a few that are upset with Fitbit that they recently changed (april) the way you can get "active" min you have to be moving more than 10 min for it to track. My husband is moving all day long and Monday he was up at 4:30am and didn't sit down till 9pm and his only recorded 350 of "active" min.
So there are times when I do a workout and won't get any active min, but I can vacuum and clean my house and get active min. But I still LOVE my fitbit to see everything else. Sleep patterns (auto on the Charge HR), resting HR (min is a lot lower than hubby mines at 50-53), seeing if I can get more steps than other friends, seeing my average HR during workouts......

No, it picks up movement.
Don't know how, but its pretty right on
I did a comparison couple years ago with the Flex and Omron Pedometer
the Flex picked up more steps.

So far I am loving it
be sure and try one on for fit. I got small, because I have skinny wrist, but I think a Medium (if they have that size) or Large may have been better.
I am on the last 2 holes. I could have tried one on at Verizon store, but didn't
I bought mine at Dicks sporting and am sure they could have gotten it out for me to try on.

My FLEX info was clashing with my new HR
but I think I have it resolved now.

I wanted to give my DH my old one but would have to set it up different I guess.

I can't wait to see how the workout shows up today.

I walk 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day. I also don't like the way Fitbit is counting active minutes. It has to be 10 consecutive minutes. I feel it is giving me too many active minutes, as it is counting my cool down walking as active minutes.

I hate the new fitbit tracking. I get my 10,000 steps or close to it most days, but now I'm only get points for the half hour I walk my dog. The rest of the time I guess I'm not getting 10 continuous minutes. I know the points shouldn't affect me that much, but it was fun and encouraging to see them mount up.

Fitbit made their device so it doesn't count minutes unless you do 10 continuous minutes or more.

Mines had trouble the last 2 days. It's tracking distance and not minutes. Maybe it's SP and not the Fitbit.

The only things I've been using my Fitbit for are sleep tracking (so convenient!) and step counting. When I've taken a walk, I don't manually add it to Spark because I figure it's counted as part of my steps for the day and don't want to double up. However, other intentional exercise like lifting weights doesn't show up in my step count because it's so stationary and focused, so I add it. Same with stuff like Pilates or yoga - it's strenuous but doesn't result in a lot of distance traveled. That's my philosophy.

Also, my steps being higher or lower doesn't influence how much food I eat or where I feel my calories can go on a daily basis - I'm aiming for a certain healthy intake range regardless.

"I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do."

I am unsure about the syncing from site to site, but I have adjusted our calories to meet our needs. My wife's said she could have 2100 calories a day, but that is absolutely not true. She can easily not be hungry on 1200-1400 a day, so I just adjusted her calories to 2000, set it so her goal was to be a negative 750 on her daily intake VS output, then it shows her to intake amount to be 1250 a day. It's all about making it work for you, not really doing it exactly like it says.

My wife and I do and love it. That being said, some people use a scale and are waiting for the weight to appear and it will make or break your day. We try to use it daily, but simply to track ourselves. We weigh to simply make sure we are on the right track, knowing that the number will go up and down and to see the graph of progress on the computer and phone app. If you are a person who is living by the magic number produced by a scale, then I would still recommend the scale, simply for the syncing, that is a nice feature and cuts a couple steps out of the already hard process of losing weight. In addition, I wouldn't recommend weighing everyday either, unless you completely understand that the numbers are going to fluctuate.

emoticon JREINSBER, I love my fitbit, I wear it all the time, and you are right it does make you push yourself that little bit harder especially when you join the community on fitbit and have someone to challenge you. Don't push too hard though, with you knees, baby steps to begin with.

I have been using my Fitbit for about a year and a half. I love it. I have had my knees replaced (one twice) but I still try to get around 10,000 steps most days. Sometimes I am only around 8,000, but my doctor thinks that is plenty for me. I am trying to lose about 15 lbs. so I do push myself at times. I didn't know I could sync it with Spark site, so that will be great. I just have the small one that clips onto my waistband or bra but it seems fine for me. Love to read about everyone's goals and experiences and I do agree that wearing the little thing does inspire me to push for those extra steps each day. My next goal is 15,000 steps, but not sure I can do that and not suffer afterwards. Yeah for Fitbit!!

I am using the Fitbit and agree that the synced tracking of calories from Fitbit to Spark is high and makes it seem like you can eat more than you can. I also use the Fitbit app on my phone and use that to judge if I have extra calories or not. I tend to stay in a calorie range that is near the bottom of my allowed unless I know for a fact that I have been VERY active. If I have run 3 miles and done weights or the like. If I just have a ton of steps then I do not tank up on carbs! LOL That said, I find the Fitbit very motivating and I try to reach all the goals every day even if I am feeling tired. Before the Fitbit I would have just plunked down rather than pushing to get 30 active minutes or 5 miles of movement etc.

Does anyone use the Fitbit Aria WiFi Smart Scale. The scale tracks your weight, percent of body fat and your body mass index (BMI). It syncs to your Fitbit account where you can keep a good record on your dashboard.

Hi -
I just connected up a new Fitbit, as my other one got lost. The new one is working fine on the Fitbit site but SparkPeople can't read it, or something... Any ideas? I tried "Disconnect" -ing and then reconnecting but it didn't work.
Thanks for any help.

I have a fitbit zip. I have had no trouble with it, only time I had an issue was when the battery was low. I knkow the website has had a few problems several months ago, but once the site was back up it updated with my fitbit and I had access to everything again. I have been wearing my fitbit zip since the fall of 2010 and still love it. It has helped me accurately track and update my goals. I highly recommend it.

Hi I have the fitbit flex and I love it. I don't even notice it on my wrist. I have had other step trackers that attached to my pants and found they kept falling off. With the flex I have been very conscious of how many steps I do every day and my sleep habits.

I have a Fit Bit Zip, there is NO WAY you can accidentally lose it, It clips extremely tight to your clothes. However, Fit Bit had a break down on their page and they took certain peoples badges and miles, they took 20 miles off my life time. I am handicapped and I worked HARD for the miles I had! I no longer trust Fit Bit's page.

I want feed back on the Spark tracker and how accurate it is, can it come un clipped and be lost?

I do not own an iPhone or any android device with blue tooth and I need a tracker that I can use with just plain Wi Fi on my computer.

Can anyone give me feed back on the Spark. I am just plain angry at the Fit bit people, and their faulty page.

I am researching extensively for a Wi Fi device only or maybe just a plain old pedometer.

I use a walker 24 -7 to walk, so a wrist type device will not work at all. The Fit Bit only registers half of my steps if I walk, as I was born with Cerebral Palsy, and walk with a limp. It does register every step accurately if I "jog" or run, as much as I can with a walker.

I'm having a difficult time with learning the Spark Page and was a member before, but deleted my account because of the not user friendly page. I had to start all over and I couldn't get my old user name back. Every thing has changed on this page in four months. The page alone is stopping me from buying a Spark.

I need help and info. I can't afford to make another mistake.

This is one burned out Fit Bit user! emoticon

Love my flex. I would be concerned about losing the zip.

I was going to try the fitbit zip as I have an activity tracker from spark and now it has broken twice. The first time it was replaced but now it is the "dogle" that plugs into the computer. So I would have to buy a new one. I have only had it since January this year.

Any thoughts on fitbit zip vs. fitbit flex?

Wondering what the advantages are between the Fitbit and the SparkPeople Activity Tracker. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

If you've linked your FitBit to SparkPeople there is no need for any further tracking.

I have a question. I think Fitbit really overestimates the calories I burn. I'm very active throughout the day and my step (after a work out on top of that) ends up being 8-13 miles. This is messing up my nutrition goals and makes SP want to set it up way too high. I really, really wish it were that way but I simply can't eat that way and expect to not gain, let alone lose weight. Anyone else having this issue?

Plant strong as of 01/25/12.
