The truth of the matter is, as evidenced by the varied replies here on this thread, there is no single, tried-and-true answer to your question.
This is a personal preference. Try it both ways, and see what works best for you. I prefer not to eat most days, but if I do a hard (as in, 1 hour intense or more) workout, I need something or I hit the "wall" about halfway through. If I don't feel like eating, I'll grab a protein shake so I have something in there.
I prefer to eat breakfast after I work out.
Your mileage may vary, so experiment and see what is the best fit for your body and lifestyle.
