When I am exercising I usually think about daily life. I think about my family, friends at work, a girl I'm crushing on, beautiful women in general, what I have to do and how I'm going to do it. I get so fixated in my thoughts that sometimes I don't even feel like I've really exercised. I mean yes I'm physically tired, but mentally, I feel I could keep going for hours. The past few times I have exercised I have been thinking about how good I will look for spring break lol

Take it one day at a time. :)

It is really hard for me to keep going some days because I have been inactive for so long and I am so overweight. I do not like to have headphones on while walking so I started looking around at the signs in my sight and making up as many words as I could. I got bored. Now I am singing to myself 100 bottles of beer on the wall and believe it or not it really helps before I know it my time is done. Love it.

When I run, I think about my form. Am I picking up my feet? Are my ankles loose? How is my posture? Are my core muscles engaged? Is my head tall instead of leaning forward? Do I need to tuck my chin? How's my arm swing? Are my shoulders relaxed? Etc.

Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.

If I am running then I think about what route to take and to remember my breathing. If I am walking I think about how all the sounds that I hear and all the beautiful things that I see that most people take for granted.

Sprinting will help with endurance!

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.

I run on a treadmill primarily at the gym, so I distract myself with music or watching the television. Usually I try to sing along to the song I am listening to. I am doing the C25K plan and I have an app on my phone that does all the time intervals for me. When I hit about 5 minutes left, I start counting down...for some reason that really helps me keep going.

Dear ETCH12...my heart goes out to you. Running has helped me get through a very difficult patch in my marriage - not like the one you are going through - but a rough patch, nevertheless. When I run the next time, I will imagine that I am running with someone who loves her husband and is using all her strength to pummel her husband's cancer to the ground and I will be joining forces with her to do the same!

God Bless...and prayers for you when I exercise tomorrow!

I try not to think. I plug in my ipod and listen to music most of the way. The last few blocks I unplug and just enjoy being outside on my own. By the time I get back my head is much clearer and my stress is much less.

I think about, solutions to real life situations. I think about my husband's cancer, and tell it to go to h3#$. I start my work out aggressively, then within a few minutes, I become calm. I'm getting strong and becoming peaceful.

I usually don't think about anything. I listen to my feet hitting the ground or my breaths going in and out. On days that I work out for a longer period of time I usually try to bring something to "distract" me such as my phone to play music on. Sometimes I do a combination of the two. When I run I like to think about how in that moment I am simply amazing. (I'm not trying to come off as arrogant.) My reasoning for this thought is that I am exercising outside with just my body to propel me. I'm able to do this without a machine telling me what to do. My body falls into a rhythm and I think everything together is simply amazing.

I don't know if any of this helps you at all but this is just what I do. Good lunch on your 1/2 marathon!

Honestly? The whole time I'm running, I'm thinking "A little bit closer to done. Nearly finished. Not long to go now. I can do it. I can make it. Man I hate this. I feel awful. This doesn't feel good. When am I ever going to enjoy this? Ugh..." hahaha. My inner monologue has always been pretty negative while running because I hate being hot, sweaty, and out of breath. But I do it anyway!

It doesn't matter how many times you fall so long as you keep getting back up.

While I am running, I sometimes become more aware of my gait and start thinking to myself "heel then toe" for the last 30 minutes of the run so that I do not get too tired!

Maybe you can listen to something on cross-training days. Then on running days you can ponder/sing the music in your head from the day before. I've heard of people using mantras as they run, sort of an "active meditation."

You could very actively become aware of your surroundings and scenery, which is probably a good thing.

Sometimes, I concentrate on the rhythm of my steps or my breathing, sometimes I think about if I can push out more steps/reps or move faster, sometimes I try to think of words in another language for different things, sometimes I pray, sometimes I think about life in general, and sometimes, I let my mind wander.

HOPE: Holding On, Praying Earnestly...from Guidepost Magazine

While I am exercising I tend to think about how much stronger I feel. Sometimes that's hard, especially when the workout is kicking my butt. At those times I just remind myself that it is making me stronger. I try to notice a difference in the way that my individual muscles and muscle groups respond to my motions over time. I like to visualize my muscles moving and growing longer and leaner.

TINIERTINA, your thought process is absolutely spot on and yes, depending on the length of time and the fatigue...the process is "about nothing" during exercise. But after the exercise is over, I love the clarity in my thinking (must be the endorphins!) and all problems, personal and work-related, become much less insurmountable!!

Well said, SP member

Five parts nothing, one part "I'm getting better at this", one part, "there's always next time", one part "this (usually a home workout) is costing a lot less than going to (gym I've not been to in 5-1/2 years), one part "you gotta catch your breath or all is lost" ....

What can I say? It's not endurance sports, but mostly mind-body (yoga, pilates, floor barre, etc. etc.) and conscious dance that are my exercise ... and eventually "nothing" will be all eight parts ... so ideally, this should evolve into -- just like the Seinfeld show -- a thought process "about nothing" ...

During my walks I think about random things: whats for dinner, my house work for the day, ideas for my stories, and why I need to drop this weight and start being healthy. When I exercise I think about what body part im working on and how it feels. If I should work more on that area right now or rest it while working another area and get back to that area later.

When I first posted this question, I relied on music or audio stimuli, now I sometimes enjoy the bliss of not thinking at all (perhaps meditation) while on really long (hours) runs. Ran a full marathon with no headphones, but instead soaked in the scene and talked with other runners. Running sans headphones can be a beautiful experience. :)
