I usually think about all the things going on in my life. But my mind will also go to things I see while I'm out running, I good ideas for my house by thinking about other houses I see.

I am constantly thinking about how my body feels when I'm running. Are my legs tired or heavy? Do I feel like I could go forever at this pace? If I kick it up a notch, will I be able to maintain all the way back? Deep breath... take in the music... enjoy the peace. I love this run... It's a time for myself and no one else.

At first, I'm thinking of my muscles and timing things just right for when I increase intensity and hoping I can stay at my heart range at that level. Then I check out the TVs, and see what's on, then try to read the closed caption without my glasses, but then I get bored, after all, I don't use a radio to exercise with, I use my phone to listen to music. Then I look at everyone around me, trying to figure out their "story". I'm a people watcher, I can't help it. There's a young boy who is overweight that always exercises with his mom. I am so proud of him, he looks thinner than he did a month ago. Most of all, I dearly hope he hasn't been getting teased or bullied at school. He seems like a happy child, though. There was a girl running, yet she didn't seem to have much muscle tone and had cottage cheese legs. I thought about my legs, how they are worse-looking than hers, and yet I cover them up. I hope that I will eventually not be shy wearing shorts to the gym when I get thinner and when it is too hot. I think about how my body might look to others as I am on my bike or treadmill or elliptical. I try to make smooth movements so that I not only put more effort into it, but so that I don't jiggle. Then I switched over to the man who sits on a bike in front of me and keeps turning around to look at something behind him, and I'm wondering what he keeps looking at so I keep looking back too. Just silly things, really. I love the machines, but I can get bored if I don't occupy my mind this way! Some guy always switches the TV channel about halfway through my workout. He loves the news. It is on two other TVs, yet he chooses the bike that is not in front of the TV with the news, so then he has inadvertently made everyone watched the same three news feeds. He does this nearly every day that I see him there. I almost rolled my eyes at him today. News is stressful and I end up thinking of the horrific bombing and poor 8 year old, and this is okay to think of other people, but I don't need the news running through my mind every day at the gym. Anyways, it ends up that I think of all that as well, then by the end of my workout, I'm serious and somber... thanks news dude...

Sometimes I compose a blog (but rarely write it) or I think of what has to be done when I get finished. The best runs, and rarest, are when I'm not thinking of anything in particular, but rather enjoying the sites and sounds of my run.

When I'm running, I use an app called Zombies, Run! I'm using the 5k training program. (They have 2 or 3 others.) It's a fun way to zone out. When I'm on the stationary bike, I listen to books on audible. It helps me to go the extra mile to see what happens next. While I lift weights, I try to stay focused on what I'm doing. I really enjoy feeling my body respond. But no matter what I do, my mind will wonder to whatever is going on in my life at the time; my job, family, bills, schedule, etc.

If I'm walking on the treadmill I will usually watch a program or read a book or meditate on Scripture verses that I have on 3 by 5 cards. If I'm walking in the neighborhood I either just enjoy God's creation and pray or meditate on Scripture verses or enjoy my companion.

When I walk in the neighborhood, I think about How grateful I am to be living in our "hood" - its just a beautiful place to live. I also use this time to plan other activities that will increase my output for the day. I'm working up to carrying my smartphone to listen to quality music and articles. But that is coming soon.

@Emmarevamped: Recently, I've really been playing a computer game when out running/walking. And yes, it's upped my mileage considerably. It's called Ingress and is free on Android. Lots of harmless fun, and when you're just 1/4 mile out from an enemy portal with the means of taking over, I usually tend to go that extra 1/2 mile.

This might seem weird and contrary to what some others have said, but sometimes I imagine that the route is much much longer than it really is, so that when I finish I feel like it wasn't so bad. Like if I'm about halfway through, I will mentally tell myself I'm no where near done yet so just pace myself and then it makes it seem faster when I really am done.

If I'm running in the park, I'm noticing Nature...what's blooming or green, the fragrance of flowers and cut grass and the birds I see and hear, the wind on my face. I think about other places I'd like to run. Sometimes I zone out to whatever's on my iPod, but I keep alert to other runners, cyclists, walkers, dogs and cars. And whether I'm outside or at the gym, I admit that I observe what other women are wearing, from shoes to headbands, because I'm always trying to find workout gear that's "real"--effective and attractive, not something impractical that I'd see in a magazine on bodies that don't look like mine!

While running, I actually try to think of as little as possible, except staying safe and listening to my feet hit the pavement. Running is terrific stress relief for me, partly because I try to clear my mind and just live in the moment - something that's ordinarily very hard for me to do.

I've found that exercise feels easier when I'm watching someone else engaged in a physical activity - almost like my brain transfers the strain I'm feeling to what it thinks I'm doing, but since I'm not the one doing it, I just feel less. Since I don't want to be a creeper and stare at other people at the gym, I try to work out while watching shows like Ninja Warrior or The Biggest Loser or Dancing with the Stars. It might be a little weird, but I also like watching myself in a mirror when I run. It helps me focus on my goals and makes me appreciate what my body can do, and as a bonus, it forces me to keep my posture in line.

It depends on my mood and mind frame when I get started on a run. Sometimes I think of nothing......sometimes I think wow how great this song is to run to. Other times I psych myself out and think Oh I am tired and can't go any farther......but mostly I think of how strong I am making myself and just let the mind and worries go blank for a while.

At the gym on the elliptical, I generally play cardio rock or cardio house music which in spite of many lame and annoying song lyrics always gives me a far more satisfying workout, and enables me to ignore the TV talking heads that dumb down the population with non-news which keeps viewers disinformed about what's really going on in the world. On my road bike, I enjoy the scenery, animals, and create mini-challenges with sign posts or trees. I think about pacing and rhythm and plan my next food or drink stop. I thank God for lungs and legs and air and his Creation. I pray for family members and circumstances and for restoration of my health to be of greater service. On clear days, I'm grateful for the clean air and azure beauty of spacious skies. On days when numerous aircraft are leaving "chemtrails" in the sky for the purpose of geo-engineering, I think about the lies and deception of our government, and how so many don't have a clue what normal jet contrails are supposed to look like (they are silvery streams which quickly dissipate without spreading into rows of milky criss-crossed cloud layers). I pray for protection from the aerosolized aluminum and other nano-particulate metals used to seed the clouds, and I wonder if the pilots and people responsible for weather manipulation really have any idea what they are actually doing to the air, water, soil, and the future of life on this planet. I think about riding farther or faster this time and the next, getting fit to take my wife on vacation to a sunny destination, living to see my kids marry and raise children of their own. I think about eating healthier to overcome the toxic prepared and GMO foods in the restaurants and grocery. I think about planting a garden and experimenting with hydroponics. I think about books to write, songs to sing, and new routes to try next time.

Remember why you started running in the first place. I'm training for my second half marathon and whenever I start to think about the miles to come and feel discouraged, I think of all the miles I've done so far and how strong my body is and how thankful I am for my two legs to be able to run :) P.S. music may help motivate you too. I love reading while on my elliptical, though sometimes the movement makes it hard to focus on the words. Still, a good book will get me through most of my workout without me realizing it! I also have my ipod going, which helps me keep up the pace as I read. When I'm not reading, sometimes I'm mentally cursing at my ipod for playing songs that aren't working for me at the moment, or for playing too many good songs and trying to kill me, lol. I have a few songs that I turn into motivational ones, things that talk about working hard/sweating/what doesn't kill you makes you stronger (even though the sweating I'm doing is not what they're talking about) -- these help me push myself a bit. Sometimes I visualize myself at what I want to look like, to remind myself of one of the reasons I'm working out in the first place (picture myself as a "before" and "after" picture), or plan what I'm going to do with the rest of my day. I usually weigh myself right before I step on the elliptical, so sometimes I'm happy with the scale and sometimes I'm frustrated, both of which can get me moving. On days when it's really hard, sometimes I promise myself I'll do just a couple more minutes, and almost always, I make it through those minutes and decide I can keep going.
