I definitely count it as my workout! During the blizzard in New England last month, it took us 4 hours to clear the driveway. We took several breaks in and out, and I tracked about two hours for a calorie burn. Usually a good snowstorm keeps me from going to the gym, because I don't want to trek out at 5am with bad roads, so I count on my "winter wonderland workout" on those days.

Since it's something you don't do regularly, if your heart rate gets up into the cardio zone, I think you can count shoveling as exercise.

HI! We've been shoveling plenty of snow here, too.

In my opinion...

Since shoveling burns me upwards of 200 calories per hour (almost 4 calories per minute according to my Bodybugg), I track it. 4 calories per minute is not far off what I burn for a walk. If that counts as exercise, I figure this should, too.

I don't log doing dishes or dusting (they don't burn as many calories per minute).

Take care! I figure we've *got* to be about done with snow already!

I read somewhere on sparkpeople that I shouldn't track househole tasks like scooping snow, but the thing is when im at home, i'm generally inactive. Scooping my long walkways in my front and backyard generally takes an hour and i still haven't done my driveway. I'm usually breathing heavy the whole time so I wonder why I shouldn't track it. Even though I spent an hour I only tracked 20 minutes to be modest, lol :p

What do you do when it snows, track or no?

Remember why you started.
