There really are a lot of great ideas here... If you have a Wii, there's a great game called Exerbeat, with latin dance routines, hip hop, aerobics, boxing, yoga/pilates, martial arts, and ways to combine them all. It can really mix things up so it's not boring. I mostly do the latin dance, which really works your waist and core.
Kettlebells are great too, I've just started using them. There's a SP team with some good resources for kettlebells, and a really great explanation of how to swing them so you are doing it correctly.
But, like some other people have mentioned, I'd invest in a new DVD player. I think you can get them for pretty cheap, or you can look on Craigslist, or even Freecycle.

Some great ideas here. I have exercise videos. Some Leslie Sansone and most of Denise Austin's videos that she has put out. Most of mine are VCR tapes. . I have resistance bands and some 5 lbs weights. I saw some one on here does the hula hoop for exercise. I have one, I am going to try it.

Mary

PS To my old SP friends - It's been a very rough journey... My beloved, healthy, athletic, tall, dark and handsome husband died in August 2012 from a very aggressive cancer... In the many months caring for him I was stressed and didn't "care" anymore, and put back on 30 pounds I had just finished losing... And then even 10 more in the first year of grief...

A short, but very sweet, video tribute to this beautiful man:

Treadmill, exercise bike, hand weights...

If all that is too expensive, then just record exercise programs on tv & do them in your living room! Or walk stairs, or jump rope, etc...

We have a recumbent bike, a tread mill, a big weight center, dumbells, jump ropes, weighted balls, but I mostly prefer using body weight and doing fitness games/dvds.

I personally love to have a jump rope with me at all times (if you have room to do so in your house without breaking anything!) Also when I was working out a lot inside, the only things I really needed were 5 pound weights and two different kind of resistance bands.

Love the recumbent. It's much easier on my back. Moreover, regular bicycle seats are designed for folks with "designer" butts. Even after losing over 100 pounds, alas, I do not qualify. And, I'm proud to say it. emoticon

I like the recumbent. My cardio likes it. And, most of all, my rear likes it.

You really don't need much to get started. A resistance band is cheap and very versatile. Any dvd that interests you is also inexpensive and easy. I have a nice home gym (I call it "The Cat's Meow" with all sorts of gear I have collected over the years. Lots of dvds, resistance bands, I found a nice treadmill on sale, have an elliptical, set of Nautilus dumb bells, a weight bench, large mirror, balance ball and a hydraulic trainer so I can "ride" my bike indoors.

Commitment. It is the first thing I do each day. I love my Recumbent Stationary Bike! I have bad knees, and it has strengthened them, plus I went down a size, before the weight loss even showed up...

Distractions, otherwise the motivation to keep going wanes pretty quickly. My gym has a TV monitor at almost every cardio machine, and I like to bring a book.

Also lots of water within easy reach. Gym is not well-ventilated so when many people are working out it can be a sauna.

dvds/videos, esp Coach Nicole. I have these on iPad, which can be moved around so I can see it, according to the position from which I'm doing the exercise. Weights, mat.
I also have a stepping machine I use, either for stepping or for balancing, when standing at my computer.

In addition to the equipment of your choice, I think the most important thing is good things to watch on TV. I have worked thru many sets of TV programs--the Sopranos, Sex in the City, and now am watching Law and Order. The rule is that I can only watch when I am actually exercising. When you are really into a series, it is amazing how your motivation increases. I also love the Bosu.

My step and my hand weights are my savior...But I have to admit I am also in love with my treadmill. When I first started working out I weighed 332lbs and I had to modify most workouts but with the step I was able to just step up and down, it helped build my endurance and confidence.

I love my Wii Fit and Just Dance games. Easy to store. While I'd love to do some of the newer work out DVDs, I live on the 3rd floor, with VERY creaky/loud floors, so the Wii activities are as far as I can really push it. I had to experiment to find the non creaky parts to put the Wii Board. The idea of the downstairs neighbors (though i cant stand them) wondering what all the stomping around is, makes me cringe, so I stick with that. I do the non running/non jumping games like boxing, free step etc etc. I'd love an exercise bike, but money and manpower (to carry it up all the stairs) just isn't there.

I exercise indoors, and here are the things I've purchased, by date order:

1) Resistance bands ($5 on ebay!)
2) Stationary bike ($175 on Amazon)
3) Dumbbells
4) Yoga ball

I don't really use the bands anymore, but I use my dumb bell weights 3 times a week, and my stationary bike was by far the best purchase I've ever made. It wasn't terribly expensive, and I've ridden it for over a thousand miles in the last year. You could probably find one second hand in the newspaper or craigslist for even less!

The other thing I do now is Zumba. It's indoors, obviously, and I really like going to the classes. It's also super affordable, $4 a class. You can also buy a Zumba game for the Wii or Kinect, if you have either gaming system.

More than anything, I suggest investing in a piece of cardio equipment like a stationary bike. When the machine is right in your face, it's hard to make excuses!

Everything we need is within - your body is the lock, your spirit is the key.

My bike is sited in my 10 x 8 garden shed. Fortunately I have a smaller one which I keep the gardening equipment in so it's just me, the bike and a few recycling bins... and occassionally one of my cats who comes to check out what their nutty human is doing!.

I feel fortunate to have a stationary bike in one bedroom and a treadmill. in the other. My basic need for indoor exercise is my DVR,some fund DVDs, weights and stretch bands. I exercise with them in the Living Room. Oh, and some bright and fun work out clothes helps keep me motivated. Wish I had a separate exercise room with all this equipment in it and more.

The only place i really have room to workout is my basement. Today i cleaned it out, set up a gazelle and treadmill, brought a tv down, and bought an area rug to stand on for my videos i also put 3 and 6 pound weights out. I worked out tonight and it was awesome, I love the feeling of having my own little gym. Even if its just 2 machines and a tv.

I have a very small apartment myself and gazelles, stationary bikes, and other larger equipment would not work in my place. I have a yoga mat, a set of dumbbell weights and a stability ball. I am currently making my own UGI ball which is like a stability ball but cushioned and weighted.
I am currently saving up for a set of Lebert Equalizers which are space saving and can be used for pull ups without installing a pull up bar in our rental. Other than that, I jog in place or skip without a rope (we have low ceilings) and I improvise. I have a set of resistance bands but for what I do, I rarely use them. Not saying they aren't a good investment and if you use them, awesome.

I would recommend getting a nice pair of padded weight gloves if you are going to do any kind of weight training. I have a pair of Gripads but any pair you are comfortable with will work fine. Makes holding weights and sometimes plank work and pushups easier.

Resistance bands, dumb bells (3, 5 and 10lbs), a yoga mat. Those are the items I always have at home for fitness. It pretty well eliminates any excuse I have: Cold/snowy outsdie? Too hot? Rainy? Don't want to drive to the gym? No time? Pretty much all are elimintated by keeping those few items around. I also have a few DVDs that I have gathered over time: Belly Twins Core COnditioning; Coach Nicole 28 day bootcamp & total body sculpt; Ballet Beautiful Body Blast.

Good variety, both strength and cardio and I can do anything from a 10 minutes workout to over an hour.

Seeing as I live in NWPA and there is a LONG period of time where getting outside to work out just isn't possible I have fallin in love my DVD player and my collection of Leslie Sansone Walking workouts. The brisks walks get moving anywhere from 1 quick mile to 5 miles. LOVE LOVE LOVE that I get in alot of steps. emoticon

my must haves are a stability ball, free weights and dvds. I do also have a treadmill, and I second the suggestion of music if not working out with a dvd.

SarahM04, for your 2nd question about limited space in your apt.

I would first consider finding indoor workouts that don't require alot of equipment. Tapout xt, Insanity, 10-minute trainer or the like.

Invest in a new dvd player (under $50), even a portable one would work, that way you can place it anywhere you have the space to workout and don't have to just rely on internet workout videos.

When it is cold, I like using DVDs. I like a variety so that I won't get bored. Hand weights are good to have and resistance bands.
