Zumba alone is not enough. Add strength training a couple of times a week as well as other cardio. I tend to do Zumba twice a week just because it is fun, then I swim a mile 2-3 times a week and the other days I do strength training.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

Strength train--anything that will build the muscles! Don't worry about bulking up. You have to try very hard to do that. What you gain in muscle will balance out with the fat you lose off the top of it. I ran for a year and never lost weight. Cardio is good, but it doesn't do a whole lot for metabolism and weight loss efforts. The second I started doing Barre classes, the pounds started coming off and I was able to get lean and toned. I've never felt better and it has everything to do with the workout change (and diet, too, of course).

CSBILLIE, have you lost 2 lbs in only the last five days? Because that's actually a *lot*, especially with how close you are to a healthy weight/your goal weight. You should probably be expecting to lose about 0.5 lbs per week now.

I understand your frustration. It was the same for me. It changed when I changed my nutrition. Now, I use supplements with Isagenix and (pretty) clean eating combined with P90X. I'm finally losing. Keep at it.

I was doing the same thing. Working out 1 hr a day. But still eating healthy only half the time. So for the past 5 days I have maintained my calories under 1500 and still excersising. But have only lost 2 pds??? I've had no trouble loosing weight in the past when I worked hard at my diet and excersise. What could I be doing wrong?

Your best teacher is your last mistake!

yes you need to fuel your body..working out is only part of the plan. eating right is so important to weight loss. track your food as that will give you an idea of what you are eating. You can't out train a bad diet. Are you doing any strenght training as that is important too...?

Lets be clear, weight loss doesn't STOP if there is a deficit. If it stopped, no one would starve to death. However, the body does adapt to less fuel. What is also missing from the equation is how much do you weigh now?

I also don't trust your eyeballing portions and calories. No offense to you, it's just been proven that time and time again that if you're not measuring and tracking, you're likely underestimating. It's true for me too.

So start measuring and tracking and come back to us in a couple of weeks with the numbers and we'll attempt to troubleshoot.

I have not read all the previous entries just the one immediately before mine. I agree totally with what she is saying. If you don't add fuel to the run your motor it will not burn calories. Just like starting a fire and keeping it burning. The body must have kindling or food to get the fire built up to burn the excess. There are hormones in our intestines that sense the consumption of food. There are ones that engage the appetite and ones that stop the appetite. They are called Gherlin and leptin. The Gherlin hormones are based on how much excess fat you have on your body. If you starve they will stimulate the growth hormones and you gain weight instead of lossing it. The leptin hormones are activated when you eat and they engage the appetite suppressants to help you loose weight. You must eat protein rich, low fat and simple carbs to loose weight and eat 4 times daily. Drink copious amounts of water which helps to stimulate the appetite suppressants.

I know too much info, but I have learned this over the last 5 months. It has taken me that long to loose 20 pounds and I still avoid eating as I should I eat a very skimpy breakfast and lunch and a reasonable dinner. I hope to reach my goal and add more food as I feel secure to do so. Good luck!

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.

1. you are not eating enough. And you should look at WHAT you are eating. Protein, good fats and carbs, f/v.

2. your body might be used to doing Zumba. I teach it and have for 3 years, and my body doesn't respond to it anymore. I have to go do other workouts to get any results.

3. Eating right is 80% of the losing weight game.

4. measure yourself and track that as well. you could be losing inches

1200 calories, IMO, is not enough calories for people who work out consistently.

It is what it is....

Sparkpeople say I should be eating 1100-1500 calories a day. Honestly I try to meet that goal but most days I just can't eat that much food...

EAting less than 1200 calories (or even just 1200 c a lories) is likely not going to support your activity level, and can slow your metabolism and sabotage your weight loss efforts.

What is your Sparkpeople-generated calorie range, and are you tracking accurately (by weighing and measuring.)

You are undereating for your activity level, honestly. I don't think that's going to be good for your body in the long term.

I used to keep track of everything I was eating but then stopped because I didn't feel like it did anything maybe I should get back into logging my foods again.

And I hardly weigh myself I always use the tape measure to see inches lose (which is not a lot loss) but I did just buy a scale and that's how I know I never been this heavy.

Are you tracking what you eat? Like measuring your food out instead of eyeballing it. I noticed I was exercising weekly and still not losing weight until I started tracking my calories each day and follow what the sparkpeople website gave me according to my exercise and weight loss goals. How much weight do you have to lose? I've heard many times on here the less you have to lose or the closer you are to your goal weight , the longer it takes to come off verse someone who has a lot to loss. Are you drinking enough water and watching your sodium intake, those things can hinder weight loss too. You also could be losing inches, do you measure yourself monthly to track progress? Hope I could help you a little, I'm not an expert but these are things I've been told myself to do when I was not losing weight, so I hope it helps.

Hi Meghan

The majority of your weight loss progress is going to come from diet, not exercise. So it's important to be tracking everything you eat daily, and staying in your recommended calorie and nutrient ranges. Have you been doing that?

Also consider measuring yourself since sometimes you'll see a loss of inches even if the scale isn't moving.
