For me is sleep. I have been sleeping horribly lately and getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep many nights. This causes me to feel crummy and affects my work and exercise performance.

Sleep. Sleep is what energizes your body, as well as reboots your system. Exercise is important too but don't exercise when your body needs to sleep...... If you are forced to choose between exercise and sleep you should always choose sleep.

You can sleep without exercise but you cannot exercise without some form of rest so sleep is more important.

Both are important. I read somewhere that if your choice is to get 7 hours sleep or 6 hours sleep and 1 hour of exercise the later was the way to go. One hour of exercise would be more beneficial than one extra hour of sleep.

I struggle with the sleep vs exercise problem often. There are days I simply don't have time for both. We need another hour in the day...

I think its important to really listen to your body. If you're feeling tired and sluggish, get in extra sleep..you need energy for a good workout! If you workout while too tired, you'll run yourself ragged and be more susceptible to getting sick which isn't good.
I definitely think it is important to prioritize getting a consistent amount of sleep and then schedule exercise around that.

When I sleep more, I am better prepared mentally to exercise-and my muscles are more recovered. I've even cut out an hour long workout before breakfast to sleep more-

well, it can't be exercise alone cuz I have been walking anywhere from 5 to 13 km a day and not a pound is coming off, so it must be sleep, which is broken and not restful lately
Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance!
Slim is where I wanted to be in 201o & 2011! Never happened, plateaued for a long time and gave up... got off track, but never left, so am back on track again!!! Make 2012 my year! So far, did finally lose 25 lbs. over the summer, but have found about 11 of it so far, it didn't hide good enough... and lost it again in 2013... going down to 175 this fall, and staying there...this time!

Sleep easily. If your goal is weight loss what you eat is a much greater percentage than working out. Plus that feeling of lack of sleep is much more of a drag than missing a work out. You can do other things to active your muscles. You can't replace sleep

I think both are important... however, you body NEEDS sleep to exercise. I try to make sure i get a minimum of 8 hrs a sleep every night. I love sleep and hate getting up in the morning. Its definitely easier to get up if i have had a full nights rest. If that means not having time to exercise then sneak your exercise in elsewhere... like on your lunch break. Also.... it is good for your body to have a sleep schedule. Getting up at the same time everyday is important... even on weekends when you dont HAVE to get up. I find i am alot less tired through the day when i follow the same routine. You kind of train your body to know when it is suppose to be sleeping and when it is suppose to be awake. It makes falling asleep at bed time easier too. I would suggest getting up at 5:30? then you get the extra half hour. However, i would set your alarm for 5:30 and skip the "snooze" button... i find that just makes getting up worse having to hear that horrible alarm more then once.

AS a exercise fanatic I must say both are equal. If I do not get 8 hrs a night my exercise suffers. But that being said u must realize not everyone has my schedule, especially young married folk with kids.

I believe both are very important. I think that if you don't get enough sleep your exercise will be lacking.Try for balance and you will most likely feel better.

You shouldn't have to pit sleep and exercise against each other. They are both extremely important for heart health. If anyone is weighing one against the other, I'd suggest reprioritizing their life - maybe cutting out TV time that seems to take up so much time for so many. Or cut down on other activities - if you're weighing sleep against exercise, I'd bet you're stressed with having too much on your plate and that's just as bad as lacking sleep and exercise.

FWIW I just finished reading Slim for Life by Jillian Michaels and she mentioned how even she will skip exercise in favor of sleep if she has to. Of course that's just her opinion.
As far as the snooze goes. I'd say if you get to bed late, set your alarm an hour later instead of waking up every 9 minutes for an hour....

I'm not sure if this answers your question or not, but I don't set my alarm for the same time every day. For instance, this morning, since my kids were off school and I didn't have to go to work, I set my alarm for a half-hour or so later than I ordinarily would get up to run. I didn't consider that hitting snooze, because I got up as soon as it went off, but I did get a bit of extra sleep, which was good, since I went to bed a little later than usual. So maybe on those nights you get to bed late, you could set your alarm a little later, so you'd still hit your goal, but also get some sleep.

I think that both are very important. If one suffers, the other will end up being impacted as well. I feel research is pretty clear how we all need at least 7 hours of sleep; not just to feel healthy but to also combat disease. If you cannot get in your exercise in the am, why not try pm?

If you must choose, I'd say exercise as it promotes as much more fit sleep for the time you can rest your body.
Well, they're both IMPORTANT, and my guess is that you'll have to make small changes to your schedule (including a hard look at time management) in order to achieve a sufficient amount of both in your life.
For me, it's exercise..I feel exceptionally guilty if I don't work it into my mornings, because if it doesn't get done in the morning, it's probably not getting done. If I go to bed at a time that doesn't allow for me to get enough sleep,I get up anyway. That's my punishment, and I must work on not doing that to myself again since I don't like how it feels and it's also bad for my depression (which I struggle with daily). But I WILL exercise. PERIOD.

Sleep for me. I need more sleep than the average person and if I don't get enough, my whole day is really rough and my work outs don't go well. I make sure to schedule exercise, though, as well as sleep so that I get enough of both.
Not everyone needs the same amount of sleep. I know for me, I go through periods where I need 8-9 hours, but when I'm feeling really healthy and strong, 7 hours is enough. It depends on a lot of things, I would say. I was in a hurry to get as fit as possible for my wedding a few years ago, I worked out twice a day and probably didn't get quite enough sleep (6 hours). However, at that stage, training was more important, so it was an ok short term solution. In the long term, I think getting 7 hours of sleep is important, so now I only workout in the evening - about 3 times a week. I have a hard time scheduling more than that without feeling stressed.

For me, it's really important to maintain my sleep schedule. That means I'm in bed by 10pm and up at 6 am every single day, even on the weekends.
You don't have to eat the whole thing.

I say sleep. How many hours of sleep are you getting? I get up at 5am, too...but I go to bed at 10pm, so I don't feel sleep deprived, and I still have time to exercise during the day. When I have enough sleep, I have more energy and seem to be able to get more done.

I say exercise is more important to me, but that doesn't seem to be the general consensus around here.
I don't buy into the "tired makes you eat more" - I lost all my weight and maintained, was pregnant, had a baby, and trained for 7 marathons on 4 hours of sleep a night or less over the last 5-6 years.

Both. But I will say, when I don't get a good nights sleep, I drag and don't feel like doing anything. Up at 3:30 this morning and tired already.

I think if you are generally consistent with exercise, an occasional sleep in and miss is ok. Listen to your body. I don't think sleeping in an hour is bad for your body.

One of my fast break goals is to not hit the snooze. But please note that my alarm is set for 5 am. Before if I had a super busy day at work and didn't get to bed until late, I knew I could change it to 6 and get one extra hour in. But I do have to rush my morning when I do that. Is that bad for my body? Is it better to get more sleep when you really feel you need it or is it more important to stick to a schedule so your body doesn't get confused? I usually try to walk the dog in the morning but on the mornings when I just can't seem to get going, I make myself find time to do it in the evening.....
Sleep or exercise? Sleep or consistent schedule? What's most important for our bodies?
I just hate the thought of that GUILTY feeling I would get if I did decide to take that extra hour of sleep since I made it a GOAL to not hit the snooze!
