It's NOT muscle but it is 99% likely to be water, and it will go away in a few weeks. Nothing to worry about and perfectly normal and expected!

Yes, you can retain water whenever you increase or start an exercise program.

Muscle goes on at the rate of a few pounds a year if any, and requires a caloric surplus, so it's not that, but water weight is VERY common!

Keep up the healthy habits - it'll disappear.

I'm not 100% sure on this but it could be that you are gaining more muscle! If so, that is awesome :)

I started taking cardio kickboxing this week (2 days). I have been VERY sore- clearly using muscles that I'm not using on the elliptical at the gym! However, I stepped on the scale this morning and it was UP 1.5 pounds from my weigh in Saturday! Can adding a more strenuous workout to my week actually cause me to gain weight..or rather, retain weight??
