In the past it was getting bored with work-outs...now I have planned and changed my routine so that hopefully I never lose motivation. Time will tell!

To put things in perspective.

A young woman I have trained with for over a year has Muscular Dystrophy and is immobile from the waist down. Every two days she hit the gym hard using all the weights and cardio (hand bike) she can. A real fighter.. going the distance and more to fight the filthy disease.
She has just been given six months and she working out harder than ever ...

Injury is the biggest set back. I had knee surgery last summer and it's been a hard road. Baby steps - that's what my physical therapist told me. Gradually I got my strength back but have to modify those knee exercises. I overdid it yesterday and have to just work on upper body strength today. Work around your injuries, rather than doing nothing.

Physically, my biggest limitation for exercise is my knee. I have damage to the bone and cartilage of the anterior compartment of my right knee. That means whatever cardio exercise I do, I do to the limits of my knee. There are good days and bad days, and my work out varies accordingly. The knee damage also restricts some of the strength exercises I can do. Squats are completely out of the question most days, for example.

Mentally, my biggest limitation is sheer exhaustion. At the end of the day, I'm too brain tired to want to do anything, which is why I've switched to working out in the mornings.

Fatigue. I've had to settle for less days of cardio because it's better for me to rest some days.

it takes me forever to get up and awake in the morning and I have to be home by 7 am, so it limits how much I can do.

A few years ago I asked a similar question in these threads asking others what their obstacles were to becoming more fit. I was astounded with the problems people have with work, family, injuries, illnesses and more that they struggled through to be able to exercise. I was humbled and inspired.

I am on the tail-end of a very serious lung infection after nine months. I was in bed 12 - 18 hours a day from May through Thanksgiving, then 10 - 12 hours a day from Thanksgiving until New Year's Day. I had nine doctor appointments with four different doctors. Should have seen the lung specialist about six months ago as so far his treatment is helping the most with a new drug therapy to stop inflammation of the bronchi in the lungs.

I was at the top weight I had ever been in my life in January 1, 2013, even though I had been on Spark People for four years. Changing from an active to sedentary lifestyle and not changing my eating habits added up to unwanted pounds and no slacks fitting! I joined weight watchers and lost six pounds in six weeks.

I can hardly wait to become fully healthy again and return to my normal, active lifestyle which includes jogging and swimming. In the meantime, I am doing Yoga, Pilates, and walking.

Best to you all, and hang in there!

POKIEFUZZBUCKET, I can completely relate. The day I got the news that my Dad had died was the day before I was supposed to do my first 5K. Even though it's only a 5K, it was kind of a milestone I had worked myself up to. Of course I didn't do it, and I haven't really done it since. I guess sometimes life - and death - deal us these kinds of blows, and all we can do is pick up and go on.

I'm sorry about your loss CALLMECARRIE. Similarly, I saw this thread and I thought of the passing of my father this past May. The weekend that we held his memorial was the weekend of a half marathon that my twin and I were supposed to run together. Of course we didn't run, and I completely lost my running mojo. Still haven't found it, really. I was just devastated by the loss and it threw alot of aspects of my life out of whack. I gained a bit of weight since then and I am working on coming back from that.

When my Dad died I travelled a couple thousand miles to be with family and had no control over what was served for meals for several days. There was so much to do, it seemed self-indulgent to spend time on a special diet for myself. I was in Omaha for two weeks, and I've never seen so much heavy, sugary food in my life. I got a little sick. It was very stressful. However, I have no physical limitations that should set me back, so I feel almost whiny saying I had to eat sugary food for two weeks.....

My treadmill just broke last night - again! I'm hoping the weather will be agreeable so I can get outside for walks until this darned thing can get fixed. Last time it took 2-1/2 weeks since they had to diagnose, then order a part. Grrr.

CUPCAKES!!!!

It's easy to say you're too tired, too stressed, too busy, too this or too that. Too bad. The only way you'll strip away the fat is to start by stripping away the excuses.

January! I work for an inventory service and we do most of our business in the beginning of the year. From the day after Christmas until early February I work 12 to 18 or more hours per day, 7 days a week. Its exhausting! When I know I'm only going to be home three or four hours before I have to go back to work, of course I spend that time napping instead of working out. And since there is a lot of travel between stores, most of my meals come from fast food restaurants or gas stations.

I usually actually lose weight in January, tho, just from being so busy. The problem comes when work slows down but I've gotten so far from any good habits that I can't get back on track. Most years I put back on the weight I lost plus some. This year, I went out and joined a gym on my first day off. Then I got back on SP, which I've been neglecting for too long. I'm going to do everything I can to fight back from this set-back! Seems like no matter what a person's goals are, there are always going to be obstacles. The important thing is to keep a positive attitude and find a way around.

I had surgery in 2008 (Scoliosis) this means 2- 24" metal rods fused to my spine from neck to butt. I have emense back pain from this 4+ years later. This has left me in a catch 22... in more ways than 1. Firstly the best exercise everyone promote for back issues is walking, due to being face down on pads and not a real bed for 12 straight hours during surgery has aggravated my hips not allowing me to walk for long periods of time. Then they stregthen your core/ abs and that would help with back pain. My problem is I literally have issues that limits my back bending ablilites to work our my abs such as sit ups or crunches. So any ideas on breaking the cycle would be much welcomed!

Also when i mean emense back pain ( which I have high pain tolerance) I am lucky to get an 8-9 day but most are 10 and above.

When the weather gets too cold in late fall is my biggest struggle! I have a hard time motivating myself to bike on the trainer and run on the treadmill. It's especially hard after exercising outside all spring and summer, and most of the fall.

Once I get back in the groove, it's not too bad. I just really struggle with the transition. Some years I'm not working out regularly until New Years. With the holidays, that's a HORRIBLE time to stop exercising!

I was just curious to see what people's biggest exercise "set-back" is? I went to my orthopedic doctor yesterday and found out I possibly have torn a deep part of my shoulder, the labrum. The only way to correct this injury is surgery. If I do opt to have it that could potentially be a HUGE set-back.

What are some other people's "set-backs?" And they don't necessarily need to be injuries.
