Yes, you can get a flat stomach without a single crunch.

That's because your belly fat is burned by eating at a calorie deficit... not the exercises you do! You see, we can't spot reduce the parts of our body we don't like. Our muscles draw their energy from the bloodstream, not the surrounding fat stores, so fat loss is a total-body process.

To get a flat belly, you need to do these things, in order of importance:

1) Eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of lean protein, carbs, fats, and all the vegetables and fruit you can into you. Eat less than you burn (through a combination of diet and exercise.)
2) Total-body strength train. The more lean muscle you have, the more overall fat you will burn! Crunches won't shrink your belly, but core training is important. Planks and pushups are great core exercises!
3) Do cardio to increase heart health, burn calories (and fat!) and improve heart health and overall body function.

As you lose weight and build muscle, your overall body fat percentage will drop, and eventually, so will your belly.

The saying is "abs are made in the kitchen" - so do make sure your diet is full of healthy food, minimal processed stuff, and eat within your ranges provided by SparkPeople. To answer your question, various plank exercises are better exercises than crunches and sit ups.

You don't have to do a single sit up or crunch to get flat abs, because those are made in the kitchen, with proper diet.

Planks are a better exercise to strengthen your abs, but you can't spot reduce fat in the stomach area by doing any kind of ab exercise.

I've read that sit ups and crunches don't really help to get that "flat tummy".... you could do a million and it still won't help. I haven't read further on what actually helps, but I think that what foods you put in your stomach, and especially sodium, help with getting it flatter.

I'm sure there's an article somewhere on SparkPeople about it.

I have a goal to get a flat stomach before my daughters wedding in June. The problem is, I hate doing sit-ups and crunches. Is there any exercises that I can do to get a flat stomach without doing those dreadful things? Tks!
