I do it right after work before the sun goes down so I get the sunshining at my back when jogging. I also have a video to do right after work for 30 mn for a alternative exercise. I used to eat right after work, now I got out of the habbit.

Go there directly after work--no stopping, no errands. Once it becomes a habit, it gets easier. I love exercising at night. My workout is what GIVES me energy.

Thanks to all of you for the encouragement. I read some of these comments earlier this afternoon; you motivated me to turn off the computer and go put in 40 minutes of SP video and Wii exercise. I usually try to get 10-20 mins exercise in the am b4 shower and work with intention of more intensive workout in afternoon. More times than not I sit down, start up the computer on SP and end up not working out.

I work as a nurse in an emergency room. We work 12 hour shifts, 7a-7p. By the time I get home it's usually around 8pm. Is it healthy to exercise that late at night and does anyone have suggestions on what exercise to do?

This is not the healthiest idea but I drink a cup of tiny coffee and that gets my heart pumping so I don't feel so sluggish. I also use visual imagery to get my psyche prepared as I approach my workout. I love the way I feel after my body has wormed up and I am into my peak of energy. What is disappointing is when I get home and my family has something else planned. It's a total let down but I keep my imagery going until I finally get to workout. Yesterday I was delayed just as I started to go to my fitness room. My hubby just bought a new car!!!! I finally got to work out a couple hours later and a lot broker. LOL

Thanks for your Thai Chi DVD suggestions! Those sound great. I used to do yoga back when I was in college, but now as a working mom of 2 ( 6 if you count Dad, the 2 dogs and the cat), I can just barely squeeze in time for a workout at the gym and then it pick up the kids, head home, dinner, play, baths, and bed. This sounds like a great idea to try to add to our wind down routine! I'm going to look for these and see if I can get my little people interested in trying them with me - even a few minutes might benefit them, and me! Thanks.

I enjoy working out in the am, but normally can't get out of bed before 5:45 to get to the gym. I try working out at night with my husband but we are both pushovers when it comes to excuses. I really do have to learn to suck it up and go at night or to try to wake up early and make my husband go too haha. All these ideas are great!

I like middle of the day, it gets me pumped up for the rest of the day and it's not too early in the morning. For say and hour lunch break 30 minutes to work out and 30 minutes to eat or a 30 minute lunch break do 15 and 15 or do 30 and have snacks for while at the desk. But everyone has wonderful ideas and everyone works a little differently.

I stop thinking about it. I stop trying to talk myself out of it and just change my clothes and do it. I remind myself that I'm not going to regret taking the half hour to do a workout but I will totally regret not doing it.

Yup, I agree with this - I prefer to do my exercise in the morning - but I work shifts and that isn't always possible. When I get home from work I feel 'tired' but if I put on my running gear straight away - the exercise perks me up. HOWEVER, exercising too near to bedtime isn't recommended!

About a year ago I decided to try some Tai Chi DVD's. I have one that is really a good way to either start or end the day. It's called, "Scott Cole: Discover Tai Chi AM/PM Workouts". The description for the PM workout says, " Clear out tension and stress as you open up your Chi to let go of the day--lengthening the spine, alleviating pent-up anxiety with a blend of Tai Chi postures, Chi Kung, movement therapy, light stretching, and a quiet guided imagery session with Scott that will help you breathe better, sleep better, and balance body, mind, and spirit." I like Scott Cole Tai Chi DVD's because they're low impact and I always feel better when I finish. I also own his, "Tai Chi for Beginners" and "Tai Chi for Weight Loss" which I also would recommend.

Sometimes either one of two things: (1) Remembering I have to do this for my health. Giving myself permission to lessen the intensity of the exercise or dance-exercise where needed. (2) I should by now be able to not rely on downloads or dvds, etc.--but sometimes mental fatigue sets in at the end of the day, and I have to suck it up and queue up a video, podcast or audio CD ... Just Because ... As much as I can't stand the commercialism of the whole endeavor, I already hardly can do it without commercially-supplied music. However, I have been able to repurpose music unsuitable for yoga (hello, Derek Beres' so-called The Yoga Sessions-- too freaking DARK and easily too emotionally exciting and heavy-handed to use for slow flow) for belly dance ... However, I've also authored my own yoga practice sequence (session length), and will get new, repurposeable music for it eventually, as well.

Yes you are right half the battle is mind over matter. I also, tend to think about how I want to look and feel. I sorta have a small pep talk , telling myself "you know this is what you need!" Also, convincing myself that I will feel lots better if I do them as oppose to if I do not do them.

I agree with the advice so far. For me, if i say I am exhausted or tired and don't want to work out, it is just one of my plethora of excuses. So I take a short walk or just do a few pushups and I get some energy. I also eat an extremely clean diet and nothing gives energy like a super clean diet. Exercising is in my top 5 must do things every day no matter how tired i am. I also like the idea of having the workout clothes on or at least in the car. That way you can't make the excuse that you have to go home first. I had a friend who hated to exercise and would make every excuse in the book. Finally she challenged herself. She put on her gym shoes and said i will just walk to the mailbox. when she made it there, she said ok, I will walk down 2 houses. She would continue this for about a mile then walk back home. She was always thankful that she did. i know people have lots going on, but exercise will also give you energy. no one said you had to do 30 minutes on a treadmill. In fact I would rather pluck my eyes out then force myself to walk on a treadmill. i would rather eat mushrooms than step onto an elliptical (and I can't stand mushrooms). I also find that exercise helps me sleep at night. Why don't you wake up early if end of day is too hard?

Sluggishness and lack of energy are my worst stumbling blocks on the path to consistency. My 3 solutions: -listen to your body. A 20-minute nap can do wonders and is sometimes needed. -walk instead. Remember that even a scaled-down version of a workout is better than no workout. -energy boosters. They come in different forms, from liquid to powder to tablets, usually provide 2-5 hours of energy and can be purchased relatively cheaply at most supermarkets and convenience stores. For those who can only work out in the evenings, I find that caffeine-free vitamin powder supplements provide much the same effect without keeping you awake all night. Hope this helps :)

I find that after a stressful work day, my favorite thing to do is hit the gym and work off some of the tension. Especially when there's a free trainer available. We get the pads and boxing gloves out and I literally beat the hell out of my problems. So no matter how tired I am, I know my body can keep going. If I don't go, I'm only hurting myself.

You may be feeling a little down, and when we feel like that we sometimes want to just go sleep. Think about some kind of reward you might give yourself if you get out there, a.m. or p.m., and do something. A new tune off of itunes? a gadget? something to look forward to when you are done.... You will feel better, and less tired, if you do.

It seems I am usually fighting a personal energy crisis in general. In my case, I have been going to the gym right after work, which is around 3 :00 to 3:30 pm. I tend to be fighting sleep around this time, sometimes even taking a brief nap in the parking lot before I go into the gym. If I go home, that's it. I pretty much want to lie down, and besides, there is the issue of spending more gas money. Morning exercise? I can barely drag myself up in time to get to work. I really should be getting up between 6 and 6:30 AM. At night, I find myself wanting to go to bed at 9:00 pm if I haven't worked out, 8:00 pm if I have. At times I do wake up in the middle of the night, however. Sorry to whine, but I am rather frustrated about this lately. I may just be one of those people who is "wired" to need a ridiculous amount of sleep. Any ideas?

I'm one of those who find it hard to workout in the evening not because I'm tired but because it takes me hours to wind down. As it is I go to college and don't get home till 10pm on a monday evening and often don't get to bed before 2 or 3 am because I just can't sleep! I rarely sleep longer than 7 hours in the winter and usually 5 in the summer.

I am in the same boat as you with the working out late at night - I get up early every morning, have a 30minute commute to a job I have to be at by 7am - which means I get up around 5:30/6am and rush to get out the door - I can't get up earlier as I find I'm snoozing the alarm as it is and on the rare days I have had off that I go to the gym it takes me so much longer to warm up and get my body moving so I found after I get the kids to bed is the best time to workout or hit the gym...which means I'm going between 9-10pm and usually spend an hour to an hour and a half there. I workout hard enough that when I get home I have just enough energy to drink my protein shake, take a shower and hit the pillow! I have been doing it for almost a year and a half and I find I just don't give myself excuses to not go even when I am tired - only when I have a pulled muscle or another injury do I allow an excuse - I look at it as the fact I have lost 55lbs so far with 95% of my workouts being after 8pm and have trained and ran a 5k and now am weight lifting - you just have to want it bad enough!! I will say that working out at night really hard means I am so tired that when I lay down and go to bed I am asleep within 10minutes according to my fitbit and I rarely wake up more than once or twice in the night and only for brief minutes to turn over or fix my pillow!! You can do it dispite what people say about the morning being better - isn't working out even if it is late at night better than not doing it at all?? The only hard part I had getting useto was the fact that because I am lifting too I do a protein powder with water after which is only 100 calories but gives me 20grams of protein to help the muscles I just worked!!

I work out in the morning because it is easier to schedule my day that way, getting up at 5 a.m. is pretty tough because I really want to just stay in my warm cozy bed. My strategies migh work for the evening workouts as well. I leave my workout gear in sight. I tell myself the sooner I get it done the less time I will have to spend with it hanging over my head. I remind myself that I feel great after a workout. I've added an evening routine to my workout. I bought a stationary bike that is firmly planted in from of the TV. I love to unwind in front of the TV catching up the latest episodes of my favorite shows on the DVR. Every time I look at the bike, I know that I can be doing double duty. I try to ride for an hour. I usually do two 30-minute stints but when I'm feeling tired I break it into four 15-minutes stints.

I used to always go to the gym right after work, which was between 3:30-4. However, most days that is the time where I'd hit my peak of the day and just feel downright tired... so I'd always find an excuse not to workout and I'd end up on my couch to take a nap and there went the evening. Last March, I started going to more classes at the gym thinking that would push me to actually want to go - and guess what? It worked! The classes are later in the evening, with the earliest at 5:35p and the latest starting at 6:45p. It gave me time to do things after work (even rest up) and then I would still want to go to class later since I had a blast at them. I actually hated missing a workout! For me it's easy, I don't have kids and it's just finding the time after work/workouts to hang out with my boyfriend, but it made me actually go workout instead of having the constant debate with myself as I was about to leave work "Should I go?" "Should I go home?" It worked for me, and I haven't looked back. Yes, there are days where even after I get home from work, it is easier to just lay on the couch or do something else instead of put my workout clothes on and go. Usually it's more towards the end of the week and know that I have had great workouts the rest of the week so I don't get too hard on myself for missing. It happens, and I would just keep being smart with what I ate and know I'll go the next time for sure.

I love all these great ideas... I am thinking my new plan will be to put my sports bra and sneakers on the couch in the "computer seat" the night before. That way when I get home, they are there staring at me when I go for my "spot". I am going to try the ten minute rule to get started on the tired days. If I know I only need to do ten minutes, I am bound to get out there- and I know that most of the time I will keep going when that time is up.

What about finding a gym or walking buddy to do it together? Sometimes a bit of added motivation or accountability can make the difference. Plus, if you get some social time in your day (something you might be craving as a mom) then it's another benefit to you... Also, can you make an agreement with your spouse/partner that something is cleaned or prepped or done in the house to make it easier to start your day tomorrow? This way you don't feel like you're leaving another "chore" behind to go workout... Good luck and take it one day at a time. I'm sure you're doing better than you think you are. Do what you can, push yourself a little and let the rest go!

I've tried the early morning work-out, I just can't get out of bed. I need my 8 hours of good sleep! The way my schedule works is that I come home, make dinner, clean-up & then hit the treadmill. It helps that I read my Kindle while I'm walking, otherwise, I find it pure torture. When I have an evening commitment, that's my off day. I've also found that keeping track of what I'm eating is a must. It forces me to focus on my nutrition.

Some days I work out with a trainer. It costs money, but I am committed to be there no matter what (OK, if there is a blizzard we cancel). On other days, I make plans with my work out buddies (these are my kids) to get to the gym - they shoot hoops, I hit the fitness room. The days where neither of these are in the plan, it is harder. I was recently reminded that a lunch hour could be better utilized (I will try this this week) for a brisk walk. Even if you just stretched on the floor while watching TV at least it is something for the days when you are really beat.

I have no idea how people find energy for a workout at the end of a stressful work day. That is why, for the last 40 years (now age 55) I have been jogging and lifting weights from 6 - 7 AM. Get up, get it done, get it over with and out of the way for the day. Every single time I try to take a class or meet someone in the late morning or afternoon for exercise it simply never works. Something always comes up and things are left undone. If my exercise is not done by 7:30 AM, chances are it is not going to happen. That based on 40 years experience.

Thank-you PATRICIAANN74. I have to admit that between xmas and a bad cold, my running has slipped enough that I got somewhat out of shape. I ran this morning though, and it wasn't as hard as the last 2 times, so I guess I'm getting back to where I was. Running at 4am has it's advantages, the primary one is that I can run on the road. I've found the sidewalks darker and less well maintained (cracks and other stuff to trip over). I don't like it now, when I run later in the day and have to use the sidewalk! Plus I see coyotes, racoons, skunks, owls and other neat stuff at 4am.

I often do double days, with my more intense workout being first thing in the morning, and adding additional (easy) cardio after I get off work. It works out for me because I bring along something I enjoy (a book I'm reading, or even my iPhone to catch up on some TV on Hulu), pop on an elliptical, and just enjoy my "me-time". Though I am currently living alone, I will soon be moving in with a spouse and he understands my regime. Having a supportive partner makes all the difference! I hope to even get him motivated to come with me in the future.

I don't have children and I find it hard to workout in the evenings. So first, bravo for the success and time you put in to your workout. I agreed with the suggestions of more B12 and getting a trainer at the gym. Maybe your body is used to everything you are doing. Change a little something in your diet as well, maybe take out dairy for a month. My favorite workout is a website, bodyrock.tv. It is a free workout site! It is high intensity interval training and most workouts are 12 minutes. Modify to your ability. On nights when you are too tired for a lengthy workout try it! Good luck.

I'm with some of the other Mom's on this one. Set your expectations a little lower - focusing on healthy eating is good for you AND sets a great example for your kids. If the gym is a respite, then go but keep the workout short and take a long shower or hang out in the Jacuzzi (if gym has one). Treating yourself well reduces the "I have to go to the gym" and increases the "I want to go to the gym." At this point in your life if it even gives you a few minutes of relaxation, you win! If the gym is just another chore in a long list of chores, put it on hold for now. Fit in fitness with the kids - hopping, rolling around, dancing, playing "follow the leader" as the toys get picked up. Five minutes here, ten minutes there, it adds up. Maybe an inexpensive pedometer would help with the motivation - once you see the steps adding up, you can get in another 20 here and 50 there. When I was in your boat (a long time ago in a galaxy far away (grin)), I tended to forget to drink - keeping hydrated with non-caffeinated liquids really helps with the energy. One of the symptoms of dehydration is fatigue.

i would try to go to bed earlier and get up and workout before work. if you were to do this you would have alot of energy to get you through the day.
the rocky road before you now will lead you to a rainbow. happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true. almost anything in life is easier to get into than out of. a diamond is a piece of coal that stuck to the job. sow an act and you reap a habit. sow a habit and you reap a character. sow a character and you reap a destiny.

Great ideas here!
Marty ~ Every day is a new beginning. Treat it that way. Stay away from what might have been, and look at what can be. ~

Put on some music that makes you want to move whenever you are in the kitchen (cleaning or cooking). A little dance in your step can make the chores go faster and add a smile to mom and babies. Throw in some lunges, and jumps if it doesn't get your heart thumping. A tradition of "kitchen dancing" will get a bit of exercise in without adding a special trip to the gym, and since you are in there multiple times per day, it will add those frequent short burst of exercise that rev up your metabolism. Best of all, when the dinner dishes are done, and the floor is swept, you can feel satisfied that your workout can be checked off the list!
Get up offa that thing! - James Brown "The place to improve the world is first in one's own heart and head and hands. " - Robert M. Pirsig "Christ has no body now but mine. He prays in me, works in me, looks through my eyes, speaks through my words, works through my hands, walks with my feet and loves with my heart." - St. Theresa
