Good topic! Beginners will get some good advice here. . . Along with everything everyone else listed, I pack flip flops with a treaded sole to use in the shower and shampoo. Those tile floors in the shower give me the willies. Yuk!

My "gym" bag contains: Towel, goggles, two swim caps, fins, socks (to wear with the fins), lock, diving rings, torpedo, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, water bottle and a lock. I love taking my toys so after I lap I can always play with friends in the whirl pool!

I only go to the gym twice a week for a Zumba class, and I change at home, so my packing is extremely minimal: two water bottles and a hoodie to wear home. One for me, and one in case a friend forgets hers.

I try to work out three times a day (in the morning right after I wake up, at lunch, and then again at home or at the gym in the evening), but I always work out during my lunch break. I pack my tennis shoes, socks, clothes to work out in, clean bra and underwear for after the work out, my iPod, deodorant, body spray and a water bottle.

My gym bag has exploded all over my office, so I think I need to cut down on "essentials." Right now though, I have my swim suit, a towel, special moisturizer for after swimming, special bath gel for after swimming, a swim cap, two pairs of goggles, a gaggle of ponytail holders, sports bras (not to be worn while swimming), my hair dryer, my lululemon workout pants, a work out shirt, some nice socks, a pair of running shoes, band-aids, deodorant, a washcloth.....I'm sure there's more in there, but that's what I can think of off-hand. It got a little out of control once I took up swimming.

Most of the time I go to the gym on the way home from work, so I don't keep shower essentials in my gym bag. Staples in my bag: hair scrunchies, extra socks, earbuds, whatever clothing I plan to wear for the workout. My phone (fitness apps, music) and keys (gym tag) are on me all the time anyways so they're not in the bag. I also take my gym bag to tae kwon do, so right now my nun chucks are always in the bag, too! LOL

It usually depends where I'm going! When I go to kettlebell class, I take a sweat towel, baby wipes, antibacterial wipes, a waterbottle, spare shirt, deodorant, hair barrets and anything my fiance might need. If I go to the YMCA for example, I may talk all of those along with my ipod, larger towel for swimming, bathing suit, etc. Perfume or body spray is always nice too! Plus a snack if I'm starving after for energy.

I walk to the gym so I only take the bare esentials--- water bottle, towel, lock and key. I keep a change of underwear and sample size shower soap and shampoo for an emergency. I lock up bag, phone, etc and listen to the music the gym has on to simplify life.

I always try to pack: work out clothes & sneakers water bottle headphones (I try to remember my ipad or smartphone, but at least with headphones I can watch the tvs, so I try to have a backup pair in my bag.) and for after the workout: hairbrush and face lotion clean socks and underwear I usually have two sets of workout clothes, socks, and underwear at all times. That way, if I don't have time to pack my bag in the morning, I can still grab it and go.

I am so lucky to have a gorgeous gym in my housing complex so I come and go with no need to shower or change there. I take: water disinfecting wipes (a "rule" that you must wipe down equipment as you leave it...nice!) Great fitting shoes and cushioning socks Comfortable clothes that don't hike up Jacket to wear home so I don't chill too fast

I usually take: water bottle, shower gel, face wipes, face moisturiser, hairbrush (although I often forget this!), biiiig microfibre towel, bikini, change of underwear, spare t-shirt. Then I have my sport-specific equipment - boxing gloves, sparring gloves, helmet.... I try to remember to keep a snack like a banana or cereal bar in there too in case I'm starving after a workout!

my gym bag contains both swimming specific gear like goggles and swimsuit, as well as gym stuff - like runners, watch with cardio band, ear buds, MP3, and the cross overs - towels, shampoo, conditioner, soap, flip flops (for walking out of the pool or shower) an extra pair of shorts, shirt, and sweats (never know). While i shower after i swim, i usually don't have to shower after i workout unless i am somewhere else. i have learned the hard way to always have all your gear in one spot so that you don't forget anything you need anytime. it makes it harder to come up with excuses why i can't exercise anywhere I am. i just twigged onto carrying resistant bands as well. They don't take up much room and they are definitely a gym on the go.
