A pedometer assumes your steps are horizontal. No way is it going to record an accurate calorie figure for stairs, where most of the work is vertical, rather than horizontal.

131 sounds far more in the ballpark for 10 mins of stairs.

Thanks for the suggestions.. I will look that up. Ihave workout tapes, but i do become bored doing the same ones over and over again, so im adding the stairs for a little more instensity.

Heart-rate monitors come with all sorts of useful adjuncts, depending on your budget. They are always more accurate than either SP (which gives you an average, an estimate) and a pedometer, which, as pp have said, just counts your steps, and then is only as accurate as you have programmed your stride length to be. Not sure how helpful it would be on stairs, either, since it counts distance, not effort.

My pedometer knows all of that except my heart rate, but I agree. Heart rate monitor is the only way to really know for sure.

-10 pounds: Zumba Fitness 2 for Wii (assuming it is still for sale) ORDERED
-20 pounds: ymca or gym membership (still researching best option)
-30 pounds: new workout outfit
-40 pounds: new walking/running shoes
-50 pounds: New fitness game or DVD
-60 pounds: new workout outfit
-70 pounds: new wardrobe

I'm with Kristen_says on this one. Pedometers can count ONE thing: how many steps you take. They don't have enough information to do any more than that. They don't know your heart rate, your weight, your age, your gender, your intensity level, whether you're walking up or down... none of that. Your pedometer has no idea you were doing stairs.

Go with SP's estimate on this. If you want a more accurate estimate of your calorie burn, get a heart rate monitor with a chest strap. :)

I really don't think pedometers are remotely accurate for calories burned because 26 seems low, but 131 seems a little high for 10 minutes of activity. I'd go with SP's estimate. But I also suggest a heart rate monitor, which will be the most accurate way to measure how many calories you've burned through cardio :)

well, I put on a pedometer and walked my stairs for a good 10 min, 5 reps with a 30 sec pause in between (that's only because it felt like my lungs were about to cave in)...When I put my info into to the fitness section,(on spark people) it said i lost 131 calories but on my peodometer it only calculated 26.4...which one should I calculate as being correct?. This is day 1 for back on track. I stopped about 7 months ago now im ready to start back again... any suggestions?
