A Calorie (capital c) is actually a kilocalorie (also abreviated kcal), and is the calorie you think of when you say "I just ate 300 calories".
A calorie (small c) is technically the unit of measuring, but since in that case, you'd be eating 300,000 individual calories, the kcal was adopted to measure food, etc. Just like hertz is the unit, but whenever anyone actually talks about it outside a class, its in megahertz.
