I agree that there is no "magic" pill for weight loss or muscle building. (It's called WORKing out for a reason.)

However, I also am over 50 and have found several items that seem to make a difference at this stage of the female life. I also have NO prescription or over the counter meds taken.

I take an awesome multi called Immuplex. My history with this has been significant. (Taking large doses on a chiropractor's recommendation for a 10-wk duration cured my eczema that I'd had for 19 yrs! - It somehow addressed an inside imbalance for me and made the difference.)

I have also been recommended to take regular fish oil of some type. Right now I'm using krill oil. From some mention on Spark, I may start cod liver oil when that is gone.

I also take evening primrose oil, CoQ10, MSM, and vit. D+calcium+magnesium.

(Other than wanting to know what I take, my dr. doesn't give any indication that he cares one way or the other.) -- Since I'm not on any meds, there isn't anything to interact with.

Just sayin', you always gotta check that stuff out with your doctor, not self diagnose. It sounds like you have - which is great. But your original post didn't make that clear.

Bear in mind some people might read your post and think it's a good idea for them just to pick 15 random supplements and eat them all!

Well my list isn't really scary. I know to each his own. I get a physical yearly and my dr does know what I am on and I just had my last one with fantastic results. I am proud to say in my 50's I am not on any meds and don't plan on being on any ever when most are already on at least 5. Trust me, I have done my research and I know my body and I know what works and what doesn't and also what I need. I don't expect anyone to agree with me, don't need to but just needed to clarify supplements don't need to be scary. Just use good judgement. Someone younger may not need anything. As we age, your body is very different and I have definitely experienced that and with supplements I think it's kept me off any meds. Just saying!

Supplements for weight loss and muscle building don't really work that well. Fat loss is not helped by anything you swallow (except prescribed by your doctor). Muscle gain can be helped a little by some supplements, but most are trash. You would want to explore a body building site to get the best information on that. Generally speaking, most people do not need it. If you're attempting to lose weight you certainly don't need it - it is only for those eating a surplus specifically to gain muscle mass.

For general health, a daily multivitamin is all a person should take without a medically prescription. The list from the previous poster is indeed scary - I would hope that at some point when she visits a physician for some other need, she might show it and ask if she's okay taking all that.

There absolutely IS such a thing as vitamin overdose, so there's no need to do anything more than a daily multi unless you have a diagnosed vitamin deficiency.

As far as supplements, I was talking mainly about weight loss and muscle building primarily but would like to know about any people mind beneficial. For a while I was taking CLA and BCAAs along with a multivitamin and vitamin C. I never really stuck to taking them long enough to see results but would like to start again.

I take them and wouldn't go without them. I have noticed a significant difference on them. I know others will argue that if you eat variety you don't need them, but I don't think our food is giving us what it used to years ago and I know how much better I feel on them and know how I feel if I don't take them. Here is what I take:

Multi Vitamin
Vitamin C
Vitamin D
Gingko Biloba (memory)
5HTP (mood)
St John's Wart (depression)
B12 (energy)
Celadrin (joint pain)
Black Cohosh
Evening Primrose
Vitamin E
Amino Energy (Pre-workout drink for muscle soreness)

I know that may seem like a lot, but I have done my research and the above combination works for me and I feel great. I am also not on any prescription meds and don't plan on being on any either. I have no issue with supplements, but I think you need to do your research and test what works and what doesn't. It took me several years to finally get the above formula to work. If I run out of a vitamin I can tell immediately that I am not on it. Oh I haven't been sick in over 3 years since I take Vitamin C consistently. Also, Vitamin B12 for energy I am never exhausted like I used to be before I was taking it.

Cheers,

FitGlamGirl

Supplements for what? Vitamins are a good way to get nutrition if you're not eating a balanced diet. I eat a pretty balanced diet with lots of veggies, so in general, I don't need nor take a supplement.

Just wondering if anyone takes vitamins and supplements, what they are, and how they are working for you?
