I don't know about other people, but I spend most of zumba focusing on myself to make sure I don't trip over my own feet - so no one will be judging you because they are so busy with themselves! I also try to just go with it. Don't think negative thoughts like "I look ridiculous" or "I shouldn't be shimmying at my age" - just GO with it, and I bet you'll have more fun than any other workouts you've tried! I feel a bit like Beyonce afterwards, it is so much fun!

I learned to Zumba from videos on You Tube and practising on my own; when I felt I had a fair amount of stamina and rhythm I went to class. I go 3 times a week for 90 minute sessions, talk about seriously getting into shape~

I love Zumba. Just got the Zumba Fit 2 for my WII. Started on Monday and all my muscle hurt. It just works out your entire body. Love it. I have taken Zumba classes but I don't have time to go anymore so doing in at home is just as good. Try it you might love it.

I love me some Zumba. Don 't let moves of the other people intimate you, because they probably have been doing it for a long time. If someone new is next to me, I will break down the moves with them, so they can pick it up better. Our instructors are really great on letting you know about different moves. I also, did a Zumba fitness videotaping with one of our instructors. We had 26 participants show up for the video. I truly thinking about looking into becoming a Zumba instructor in the future.

I would probably be a little chicken to try it too, if I were to attempt the regular classes. I'm fortunate that my fitness center offers a Zumba Gold in the mornings, which is more suitable to my age. Also, there's a Zumba toning, which might help me get started.. There is a regular Zumba class in the evenings. The Zumba Gold class conflicts in time with my aqua aerobics, which I'm addicted to. I know it would benefit me to change my routine, but my group aqua class has become like my "coffee group" LOL

Don't stress out too much and just have fun with it! Yes, doing the dance moves are fun, but the footwork is less important than the workout. Just keep on smiling, and remember that everyone started where you were!

My mom loves Zumba so much she started teaching it. I attended one of her classes and really liked it.
One thing about Zumba is apparently they don't cue (they are snobs about it). So be ready for that. It's basically like a dance class. Some instructors do cue because they are required to by the club or gym they work for.

I'm glad so many have found an exercise they enjoy. I'm forcing myself to go because I am awful at it. I believe it is giving me good perspective and making more humble. I need to remember what it is like to struggle. Who knows? Maybe one day I'll actually figure it out.

Hey Amanda:
I started as an uncoordinated novice 4 years ago at the back of the studio and now progressed to the front rows, made friends with instructors and fellow zumba-goers. I love it. Zumba is my cardio. Did I mention I love it?
I say: keep at it. Even now, it takes me 3-4 classes to completely learn a new routine. The more you go, the more confident you become. And if you completely can't get smth, you can always ask your instructor to show the routine to you or some difficult move. Good luck, hope you will love it and if you or anybody else need a zumba friend or have a question, pm me for sure :)

I just started going about 6 weeks ago for the first time. It's great. My studio keeps it very dark and things move so fast you don't really have time to look at any one but the instructor so no one is watching you.

The best advise I can give you is even when you can't do the steps ( and you won't get it perfect the first few times) is to just move.

"I have had bi-lateral knee replacement and would like to do the aqua zumba. how does it work and will it affect my implants. Fast paced exercises can be detrimental. any suggestions"

In my opinion, it's difficult to do aqua zumba really fast because of the water resistance. Also, in my aqua zumba class, folks work at their own speed. There are 70-80 yr olds in the class. I don't know much about knee issues. As with regular zumba, there are lateral moves. I don't know how that will impact you knee.

zumba is awesome. Try different teachers, each has their own style. It doesn't matter if you make mistakes, you are there for yourself. Trust me, no one is paying any attention to you, they are busy having fun and dancing.

Zumba is so much fun, the hardest part is convincing yourself to try it the first times because once you've gone once you'll want to do it all the time! Definitely bring comfortable shoes, there's a lot of footwork and jumping. And like the others said, don't worry if you don't get the moves right away, usually the same routine/moves are repeated each week so you'll learn them over time. Remember to have fun and drink lots of water!

We have 3 types of Zumba classes at my fitness center: (1) regular Zumba (2) Zumba Gold - a less intense Zumba and (3) Aqua Zumba. I've attended the Aqua Zumba and really enjoy it. This thread has inspired me to try to attend a Zumba Gold class this week.

Zumba has no technique basically - show up, follow the routine to the best of your ability, sweat and see results. that's all and you don't have to worry about other people because typically, the whole group is trying to catch up with the instructor. I have been "zumba-ing" for over a year now and it never gets boring, too much fun involved. Try it and you won't regret it!!

Zumba is literally my favorite form of exercising. You can torch calories and smile the whole time.

Oh, and I'm extremely uncoordinated. I've been doing it on and off for about two years and I'm usually one of the worst dancers in the class. No one will judge you, I promise!

Don't worry about it, the promotional videos all show instructors and the like. In a real class no one is that good! In my class we are all over the place, we get lost in the steps, we have big people, small people, people who wouldn't know a rhythm if you hit them over the head with it, but we all have fun together and enjoy the class. You don't need to be a good dancer, or fit, or slim, to do Zumba.

I am a Zumbaholic!!!! I have been going for a year now and LOVE it!!!! I never been so dedicated to exercise as I am with Zumba!!! I have an awesome instructor and I agree with the others that have replied to your post..... no one moves better than the instructor! LOL!! As long as you keep moving whether you are doing it right or not is the important thing. Also, master the feetwork first and then add the arms. That makes it easier for beginners. Though I'm a Zumba veteran amongst my fellow Zumbies, I still mess up here and there and I just laugh it off. It's all about having fun. Wear a light weight show. Running shoes aren't the best for Zumba. If you really like it, then maybe invest in a pair with a pivot at the bottom. It makes for easier turns and moves. Good luck to you and let us know how it goes!!! :D

I went to my first Zumba class when I was 60 or 61 & it was SOOOOO much fun! The good part is, there are always new people stopping in & because EVERYBODY was new at one point, everyone's always understanding, Plus a good instructor always goes out of her (or his) way to explain things a bit more when there are newbies. And even after going for months & months, we ALL messed up because we're not professionals! For awhile I was going 3x a week & the pounds were just flying off!
Just relax, take a water bottle & have fun! emoticon

I'm a few months into zumba and I still mess up constantly....when I started, I went alone and stood in the back...now I know my fellow zumba-ers and just laugh off my mistakes....

No one can look as good as the instructors doing the dances, I've decided its impossible!

If you are new to it, I would also suggest a small towel...I usually just use my shirt to wipe sweat, but an hour in, you run out of places for it!

Definitely listen to the music and have your moves match the rhythm...don't give up if it is too hard the first time, it takes me a few classes before I can begin to master a move, let alone a dance..

Have a great zumba class!!

Hi! I am very excited and nervous that I will be going to my first zumba session on Monday morning. I've never tried zumba, and honestly, the prospect of dancing in public mortifies me, but it looks really fun and I've heard amazing things (and seen others who have experienced amazing results from it). At this point I'm going alone, though I'm going to try to convince someone to go with me.

I guess I'm looking for tips, advice, and suggestions for a bashful first-timer. Comfortable clothes, check. Water bottle, check. Anything else is welcome though!! Thank you.
