To tone your abdominals, get into a Pilates class. Also, watch your posture. Get your ears over your shoulders over your hips when standing and sitting. It takes strong core muscles to do that, and also back muscles.
Then on alternate days do a 15 minute series of core and ab exercises. Don't forget to do exercises for the obliques. Options could include sit-ups, partial sit-ups, bicycles (done on the floor), banana, pass-the-ball (requires a ball!), leg raises, "dead bug", and many more exercises for the abdominals.
Go jogging. It burns more calories over your entire body faster and more efficiently than any other exercises except cross-country skiing, and everyone without leg/knee/feet problems can jog. Have you ever seen an experienced jogger with a big belly hanging out?
Planks and push-ups also help when combined with everything else. Be active!
This combination has worked for me!
