It sort of depends on your budget and what you LIKE to do. I have discovered through years of ownership that I didn't loose any weight when I wasn't USING my treadmill (funny thing that). With that in mind, would you use a stair master more than an elliptical trainer?
I own a treadmill that folds up. It takes up about the same amount of space as a stair master, but only when it is up. I have a NordicTrack Treadmill that can be used with a program called iFit. Other brands also use iFit, which is, depending on the model of equipment, a memory chip or an extra module that you plug into the equipment. It can help a person train, use hills and pathways from around your own neighbourhood etc etc. To some people, this is a gimmick, to others, it can be really helpful. Again . . it comes down to a budget thing.
I like the Nordictrack. I have had it for over 6 years (used LOTS for 4 of those 6). Recently I replaced the track, and other than some tread lube, it is still going strong.
IF you get a treadmill, but shoes only for the treadmill. It prevent you from bringing in dirt that will quickly get under the track and wear it down.
