I have it 'scheduled' each day so I have clothes ready to go .......... do ST every other day ........... and do ONE week at a time ............. so I make NO excuses or allowances to fail ............ With discipline ......... as one motivator put it ............... "By losing .5 in one week ....... each week you can be down 26 pounds next Jan 2013." It was simply put and I keep it in mind daily!!

That is what I told myself to because I didn't want to exercise. Now I am addicted to exercising in a good way and feel so much better even if it is only 20 mins of a quick walk around the neighborhood.
I really needed all these perspectives before I go back to work on Monday after the holidays. I started working FT this fall after juggling a collection of PT jobs most of my working life. In addition, I kept one particulary satisfying PT job. Both involved commutes in opposite directions. I had to move my bedtime and rising time 2 hrs earlier which threw my meal and snack times off. I struggled to fit in everything including workouts. I was NOT doing well at all. I dropped the PT job in Dec, much as I loved it. So when I go back to work, I will have only one commute in one direction and two weeknights plus Sunday freed up for other important things, like time with husband, time for fitness, and plain simple down time.

it isn't easy to find the time. and the closer you get to your goal, it seems ike the slower the pounds come off.
you have a super busy schedule. make sure you are still eating healthy. when i am really busy, it is easy for me to grab quick unhealthy meals or not eat at all. if my sparkpage is assuming a certain about of calories burned, and i am consistently not meeting that, i could be overeating. for me, the computer can be a big time waster. i traded facebook time for workout time. i realized there was no need for me to check it daily, much less through the day.
when i was in college, i tracked how i spent my time so i could see how i could better manage studying and working. there are apps for this now-but in the late 80s, there was no internet, so it was done manually. : ) if you track how your day is spent, you can see what can be cut. maybe let a chore or two go. for me, going an extra day or two without vaccuming isn't the end of the world.
try starting with a small goal and add from there. you don't have to start with trying to find an extra hour a day. try 15 minutes three times a week. add from there. right now my workout goal is only 30 minutes three times a week.
Not enough time- I TOTALLY feel this... I thought I was busy when I was in grad school, I thought I was busy when I had 9-5 job with an hour commute and some weekend work...but now as new mom 'not enough time' has taken on a WHOLE new meaning. I mean, any moment I am trying to do something like, oh, say, shower, LO might need me! So trying to fit in an hour, let alone half an hour workout seemed like a completely daunting task- where I used to do it easily and all the time. So what am I doing? Learning to accept 20 minutes when they come, and an hour when it falls in my lap. Sure, I set a goal. Say 45 minutes of cardio. But oh! baby is crying, work up early from nap, etc. So I got in 15 minutes. But then later in the day he goes down for an unexpected nap, so I take 10 minutes there. What about squatting up and and down and up and down and up and dow (lol) while holding him, makes him happy and my thighs burn.... My point is: Im having to get creative. REALLY creative if I want to get take this baby weight off. And that means not being picky about when and how I exercise, and being willing to be uuuber flexible. Meaning, I may have just sat down after running around all day with a fussy baby- but hes napping- deeply. Better get up and MOVE! (oh did I mention also that this baby never likes just being laid down to sleep- have to make it happen when DH is home to hold him? crazy baby :)...haha). Anyway, it might sound and annoying and trite but its so important to be creative and adaptable and to keep your eye on your goal- that will get you to get up and move when you find those spare moments. I know its TOUGH being busy, with school, work, etc- but it IS possible to find time, it might just not look how you expected it to look :D cheers! Stay Sparkling!

I have found that to get my workout in, I HAVE to schedule in the morning to get it done & checked off my list [unless it is something scheduled and PAID FOR in advance!]~like having a trainer, playing a sport, etc. Note: I have found that paying for a workout in advance is a HUGE incentive!!!!] I have a young child, I am a stay@home mom & I homeschool plus I have a hubby who works long hours ,so I NEED to get it done early. It is so frustrating when I DON'T get it done early, and I am ready to go to bed when I realize I haven't gotten the workout in! For this year, I made a resolution to do at least TEN MINUTES a day /6 days a wk. to keep myself going {I do better with goals that are doable!].I am starting small, but am planning to be consistent! P.S. I read somewhere once that a good idea to get your workout in is to plan it like an appointment and write it in your schedule. When you prioritize your health first, all the benefits come back to you over time. It's the QUALITY OF LIFE you choose for yourself.

May the Lord who made Heaven and Earth bless you. Psalm 134:3
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
Someone once told me when I complained about lack of time. "You have the same 24 hours every day that everyone else does, it is how you plan it that counts" This is such a true statement. I see women and men everyday that have way more things on their plate than I do and they still accomplish what is important to them. Maybe this is the key. What is important to you.

I've been dealing with this since Sept when I started my first full-time job. My hours are predictable but my work is very involved and very draining and there's usually no energy left by the end of the day. I also moved very far north for this job and the lack of sunlight is a huge problem for me. Still figuring it out!

Sometimes I think that I don't have enough time to exercise and plan meals but I somehow always have TV time. I will meet my goals if I make them a priority.
I make sure to bring clothes to work to change into as soon as it's over and head straight to the track. Living in Texas the weather is undpredictable but a gym membership isn't in my budget right now and I really prefer to be outside. On off nights I make sure to find something to do around the house to keep me up and moving until bed time. Every little bit of piddling around the house is exercise!!!

What a great idea, I will start looking at two priorty items and then add the exercise even if it means vacuuming the house to get the exercise in. Movement is the idea.

I look at my to do list and pick two things I want to get done. After I get them done I make time to exercise. Or if the to do list is long I will only do house work for an hour and then exercise. I try not to get frustrated if I don't have everything done because I can come back to it tomorrow.

Stop asking yourself how you can fit in more - start making it a goal to do less.
Charlotte, I like your positive, can do attitude! I hadn't thought of asking for my hubby's help. But now that I think about it, I think he'll be very supportive. I'm going to try it. Late afternoon is the warmest part of the day, here in Sacramento. If I'm going to get outside and walk, this is my best opportunity. Your suggestion can make this into a win-win situation. Thanks! During the winter is the hardest for me. I go to work in the dark, and come home in the dark. I try to get as much working out as possible during the weekends, but at that point I just want to sit and do nothing. If I don't come home and workout right away (and get my husband to help with dinner) I don't end up working out, because I can't workout right after eating, and then it's time for bed. I'm NOT a morning person, so working out before work isn't an option. We have a gym at my work, so I'll sometimes walk for 30-45 mins on my lunch break if I don't go home.
Now that work is starting up again, I am going to make the time. Yes, a GYM takes time, but I can go to work, park down below and WALK up the hill to the main entrance -- and take the stairs at work all day long (depending on if I have to cart something or not). I can pay extra attention on weekends -- where I can walk around here on the streets if I get up early enough, without being killed by a car on a road not meant for walkers. I am going to lift weights (without spending the moolah on weights) at home before I go to work and steadily build that up.Okay, right now I am cat-lifting, as one weights exactly 10 pounds, and she doesn't seem to mind, but hey...) I'll do sit ups and push ups, as they require no time (or money) to go to a gym.
Yep, there I am, swimming through the desert sands. Might just be a mirage, after all. But this is life, and we learn best about it if we explore it, and take our chances. A life unexplored, after all, is one of the saddest things out there.

I find timing hard too. I'm a student teacher and I have no time in the day to exercise - I try to do all the little things: take the stairs instead of the escalator, walk instead of getting the bus and spending my weekends walking, doing the exercise videos from here and having some "me" time.

For those of you with demanding careers, in school with a job, with kids or a dependent parent, you have my sympathy. Been there. I'm retired now, so it's easy to find time to work out - and enjoyable. Before, it was so hard to find time to exercise. I usually traded exercise for take-out food. One or the other - that's why I'm on this site now trying to recover. It helps to have a spouse or partner who carries part of the load, and maybe that's where you need to begin.
Ladies - ask your family to help out more so that you have time for yourself to exercise!
I used exercise DVDs at home in the morning, or took a walk in the dark, am or pm. Walking always lifts my spirits, even when I'm exhausted.
Best wishes for the new year everyone!

I'm glad this has finally clicked for you! (still waiting for that personally...)
My trouble is making the time for myself. I need to schedule it and put it on my daily calendar because right now I make no time for myself and healthy living goals. Any down time I have right now is lost to flopping on the couch in exhaustion. Something must change - and it starts with me. Wish me luck!

I think I finally understand that, regardless of how much time you have, no matter what obligations, you have to make the time' you have to make it a priority and important to you and then it will happen. Its as simple as that. I have had trouble with this for years' but again, I believe that it has finally clicked.
The volunteering is the only place I am currently getting exercise. It's on a horse farm that provides therapeutic riding lessons for people with disabilities. Since I volunteer there, I am also allowed to ride there for fun and take lessons with their head instructor. Riding, pitching hay, mucking stalls, and hiking along with trail rides are good things. I do this all day one day a week. The problem is, it's ONLY one day a week. This is also the only farm in the area where I could ride if I wanted to. They have draft horses. There are VERY few forms of exercise I enjoy, and riding is one of them.

Maybe the volunteering keeps you sane BUT you need to look after yourself before you look after others, and that includes animals. If it were me I'd be looking to reduce the volunteer time and get rid of the pets so you have enought time to workout, rest and look after yourself properly.
running. I start at home - early in the morning. If I do not have ANY time, I run 25 Minutes fast. If I got time, I run 45 minutes - slow. Its the best I can do at the moment.
I agree that pioritizing is important. Working out 10 minutes at a time here and there to make 30 minutes a day, high initensity and short workouts (I am definitely going to check out melissa bender's blog--looks interesting) and combining things. I have a big enough living room that i can walk around my couch and read/study at the same time. It keeps me awake too (as opposed to sitting at a desk and studying). I usually make most of my 10,000+ steps per day by doing that.

I have trouble when finding time too. I'm a high school student, work part time, and I'm president of my school's National Honor Society. I feel like I always have something to do. I try to fit exercise into my daily routine. Like walking places I need to go or doing wall squats when I'm getting ready in the mornings. Then I don't feel as bad if I don't get a long workout in that day.
Yeah, I run into this a lot. I'm an artist attempting to have a life outside my studio. I work two part time jobs, one of which is my personally owned and operated business (art and jewelry), which takes A LOT of time. I volunteer once a week, I'm in a committed relationship, and I have leadership responsibilities for the religious group I belong to. Any of the little time I have to myself goes to reading or working on personal projects. I want to start horseback riding lessons in january, but a one hour lesson once a week won't be enough, and I can't do two, it's EXPENSIVE.
SOONBSVELTE, and some of you others, invest in a pedometer! Some of what you're doing sounds to me like exercise with a purpose! LOL
Don't sell yourself short. The right kind of activity, even on the job, still COUNTS! Take the stairs instead of the elevator, add a few steps here and there, check out the office exercises offered here on SP... even a few minutes here and there is good for you, and breaks are mandated by law last time I heard.
There's always time during--or in between-- "life stuff" to fit in getting or staying fit, and it will make the rest easier when you spend that little bit on yourself. It's like investing: you have to spend some energy to get more energy!
People think because I don't have a formal job that I have time to spare-- but I spend 40 hours a week juggling nightmare diet issues and physical therapy "homework"--then there's the doctor and nine specialists I have to keep track of... plus the usual housework: cooking, cleaning, all that stuff, so energy and time issues are no stranger to me, I can assure you. Right now, I even have one hand in a splint! LOL
... If I can do this, so can you.
Just believe. Keep an open mind. Look for creative solutions. And you WILL find a way! Kathy
"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." Walter P. Chrysler said it, I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!
Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steadfast... and that works too! LOL
Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called the PRESENT!

i always find myself using this same excuse,,honestly we can all find time it just takes a little bit of work and motivation,,I did it for 2 weeks straight with my kids 3 & 5 yr olds,,then the holidays kicked in..:( back to the drawing board for me..
This might be contrary to what most people say, but there are times of your life that just aren't conducive to exercising all the time or taking time and energy to put into food planning.
I had time like that this fall. I was student teaching, taking two classes, and working a part time job. Student teaching was SO hard and so stressful. I was at the middle school every day from 7:30-5:30 working. On Mondays and Wednesday's, I babysat for money from 6-9. Tuesday's and Thursday's I had class from 6-9. Saturday's I worked at a cafe from 8-5. Friday nights, I saw friends. Sundays, I saw family, went to church, graded, and did homework. I was asleep by 10:00 every night and up by 5:00. Honestly, I could have gotten up earlier to exercise, but it was NOT WORTH IT. When I am busy and stressed, sleep is important.
It was rough. And I didn't have time to do ANYTHING- I barely showered, honestly. I would go for walks on Sundays a lot of times, I would try to be active whenever I was working. Usually once a week I could get done at school by 5:00, and had a half hour to walk or jog on the track outside.
Sometimes, your life is busy and it sucks. Do what you can to make it less busy, or do what you can with what you have. Meal planning and healthy eating was really important to me during this time, but exercise could not be a priority. And that's okay.

I hear a pastor say that " there is only 24 hrs in a day because God knew that was all you could stand." I think about that sometimes when I try to cram too much in a day.
I agree that defining "not enough time" is critical. I find myself running in crisis mode quite frequently . . . and its usually not a crisis. I try to schedule quiet time in the evenings so I have time to myself. I also make sure to exercise regularly. I find that when I don't have enough time the things I need to do for myself are what I let slide.
I have to redefine what "not enough time" means. I guess mine is more about not enough "energy" to do the things that I claim I don't have time for.

I don't know. I don't want to sound wimpy, but I work two jobs. I fit in a 2 mile walk when I can (like this morning), but I work two jobs. I woke up at 4:00 a.m. today I couldn't sleep. I will work an 8 hour day at my law office. Get off work at 5 and go home and change and go to my second job and work until 10:30 on my feet all night long. By the time I get home of a night and wind down to go to sleep it's 11:30-midnight at least. If I get 6 hours of sleep per night I call that a good night, but I'm hardly energetic keeping this pace at 46 years old and overweight. I feel stuck. I do what I can on the weekends, but it is hardly enough to help me lose weight. I don't know how to do without sleep and function properly.
Everyone gets the same 24 hours in a day...so "not enough time" is just an EXCUSE. Give it a rest--and start exercising!
It Is What It Is.... :)

I hear you! I find it's also more challenging in the winter when it's darker and colder. Maintaining the habit is probably the most useful thing. I typically start by telling myself I'll just do my warm-up stretches or mobility exercises and 10 minutes of my workout. If after that I'm still pooped, I might call it a night and go get some needed rest or whatever feels right. Most of the time; however, getting rolling is the worst part and I end up completing my workout. having a workout partner really helps, too! At the very least, a smiling face at the check-in desk at the gym something to look forward!
Thanks for all the good suggestions on this thread! We all just need to make it a priority.
Take care and Merry Christmas all!!!!

I agree there. I feel horrible when I don't get enough sleep. I work 10 hour shifts I travel a total of 3 hrs (round trip) for work. I go to work for 3am so I try to sleep 4pm-midnight. I basicall need to fit everything else into a day I don't have to work

I try to find little bits of time here and there.... that's important, and also helps to build healthier habits. For example, I will intentionally park my car a couple blocks away from my destination, or take the stairs one flight, or get up and exercise during all the commercials of one show. Sometimes when you start, it's hard to stop!

I agree with almost all of you: We make time for things that are important to us. But, I also agree that we, as a society, have gotten too busy. I am old enough to remember when nothing was open on Sundays, after church you went "visiting", and sat on people's porches in the summer time and drank ice tea and lemonade for hours. There are seasons of business where we have goals or projects that will require focused time, but then we need a to get back to a normal, more manageable pace. I had four children between the ages of newborn and seven, while working full-time, and taking nine graduate credits a semester. I would never do it again. I don't even know how I survived looking back on it. As I get older (I'm almost 48), I am very careful about what I add to my plate and what I commit to.
GOAL: To be at my goal weight by the end of September. Mini goal: -5 by the end of May Reward: A new Zumba shirt!!!!
Baloney! There's always a way to make time or find time to workout...first thing every day works great--even if that means you have to get up early! Just do it...NO EXCUSES.

I try to get at least 10 minutes of something done in the morning before I start the day properly. May be 1/2 hour if I'm not pushed for time. I do definitely feel more energised after exercise. Today I did 10 mins of swimsuit bootcamp, and then 15 mins chopping wood, which had to be done and consumed the calories the swimsuit bootcamp didn't. If I don't do some exercise at the beginning of the day, I don't find the time and energy later.

Thanks, this is just the motivation I need to keep me focused
All things are possible if you only believe, even losing 15 pounds
I feel the same way, after working 12+ hours a day, choir rehearsal, paying bills, cooking, cleaning, there is not enough time in my life to fit in the workout that I need to do. I get tired and want to sit down and rest instead of exercising. Most time is that what I do. I have tried to work them into my lunch time but that does not work all the time because of the weather conditions or that I am tired at work. So to make it part of the day like others suggest is to move something on my plate that is otherwise important to or to not get the sleep that is required for the body to go on. It sounds good but sometimes it is not as easy as it sounds.

I felt like this too, and then I got the best advice on what to do when you feel like your workouts don't fit into your schedule -- Not make it an option. Treat your workout as if its something that you need to do each day to survive. Because although it may not be true for day-to-day survival, ultimately, being healthy is something that you need to strive to in order to survive. You have to make exercising one of your top priorities!

There is not enough time to balance obligations that I must do. I get overworked and plain tired trying to accomplish everything!

At first, I felt like I didn't have enough time to workout or was just too tired to get it in... but then, I tracked my time during the day for a couple days and realized how much time I spent here and there (playing on the computer, "relaxing" in front of the tv, etc) that really could be shifted around to make time for more exercise. I don't have the time to devote to an epic 2 hour non-stop workout, but I do have half an hour in the morning, half an hour in the evening and 5 minute "hustles" here and there. I try to find times during the day to just do 20 leg lifts while washing dishes. A little tv time in the evening is important for my daughter and I to cuddle and just have down time together... but we'll each name a quick exercise like jumping jacks, crab walks, or running in place.. when the next commercial comes, we giggle, jump up, and do whatever the exercise was for the commercial break then run back to the couch when we hear our show come back on.
It is also very important to make sure you are getting adequate sleep. I remember my last semester of college and how screwed up I was. I got in this cycle of staying up late to do whatever had to be done, but didn't realize how my lack of sleep made everything take so much longer which then set me up for another night of less than adequate sleep and so on.. sometimes you have to just say ok, no matter what these hours are for sleeping and the sun will still rise tomorrow. I think you'll find your "awake" times so much more productive. Once you know you are getting adequate sleep, just try to start the workout.. tell yourself "just 10 minutes" and see how you feel. I find once I get going, the high from it gives me the energy I didn't know I had! :)

to CAT20091. i haven't read all of the comments, but I second BORRISNORRIS who brings up the importance of sleep.
I say that to get sleep would always be number one priority. I need 7 hours minimum and up to 8 hours a night every night no exceptions for my energy to be where i want it in order to get what I need done.

Lots of great ideas on here! When I asked a similar question, most of the replies said to cut back on housework, and that got me off to a good start. I found that my quality of life didn't change much if I did some things only half as often, e.g., dishes, vacuuming, washing towels--and some puttering and fussy jobs around the house can be eliminated altogether. Start small with the exercise. There are many workouts available that are 15 to 30 minutes long. You can alternate among exercise types that you want to do, e.g., cardio one day, strength another day. Also, circuit training is an efficient use of time; Jillian Michaels' 30-Day Shred gives you three 20-minute workouts on one DVD, so it's a bargain. She says to do it every day, but in my opinion you will get the benefits if you do it every other day. I suggest that no matter what you do, you add 10 minutes of stretch at the end (unless you're doing yoga or something else that incorporates a lot of stretching). Another secret is to only do exercises you really enjoy; as someone once said, the best exercise is the one you will actually do. Put your exercise clothes on as soon as you get home (or whenever is practical) so you'll be ready to go. I bet that once you get into the habit of exercising for a short time every day, you'll be glad to add in more exercise. As for the volunteering and so on, I found that many things in my life just had to go, and others could be cut back. For example, I went to a neighborhood social event tonight but just stayed for half an hour instead of spending the whole evening. This is what efficiently busy people (like politicians and executives) do. It's hard to juggle it all, and part of it is choosing wisely. Good luck. Laurie

I have a similarly busy schedule. What I have found most helpful is to schedule time at the gym with friends. Since it's preplanned, I am more likely to go and plus I'd feel bad letting down my friends.

I didn't have time when I went to college or when I had my two children. When I hit the 30's I got heart disease.

My experience is when I have lot of time on hand I cant get anything done. But if it is busy day then I know it needs to be done now or it wont get done. So opposite works for me.

I do agree with everyone who has spoken about prioritizing. I am also a graduate student (working part-time for my department as a teaching assistant or research assistant) and a single parent of two active kids who has managed to work in exercise. BUT, the end of the semester is a BEAR and sometimes I don't get in as much exercise as I would like during this time. I don't beat myself up over it...I just make sure to maintain healthy eating habits, because that makes a difference, too. It really does. I've lost over 50 pounds, and honestly did a fair share of that without much exercise at all.
However, I see you've lost a fair amount of weight so far (congrats on that!), and I know when I was at the point where I really started to notice the weight loss that I started to let myself justify those extra calories and those days I didn't workout. I had to really push myself so I didn't get comfortable with the progress I made so that I could reach the goal I set for myself. This may not be the case for you, but its worth at least looking at whether this is about a lack of time or just allowing yourself to become comfortable with the progress you've made thus far. I certainly didn't want to admit to myself that it was the latter, but when I was really honest with myself about this I was ABLE to make exercise I priority.
Best of luck to you with everything!

Take a look at how much time you spend on the following:
Facebook texting phone calls message boards emails television
Then think about how much of that time spent is really important to your long term goals. Most of the above are valueless time-wasters.
I worked full time, took 2 or 3 college courses a semester, owned & renovated a home, and still managed to eat well and exercise. I did what others have already suggested, I recorded lectures and my own notes, listened to them while commuting to work and school. I spent the time between work and my evening classes for studying, and walking around the campus for exercise.
The weekends were spend doing laundry, cleaning, working on the house, and cooking. I brought my lunch and dinner with me on the nights I had school because I didn't get home until after 10 PM. School was a 1-hour drive from home.
It's true that I didn't have much of a social life during that time, but that wasn't a priority for me then.
Only you can decide what takes priority, and what can be temporarily given up.

Do what you can to work in 10 minutes of exercise at a time on your busiest days. A10 minute walk between classes or before and after school. Do a full workout on your lightest days.
