It all depends on how detailed is the information that you have input into the machine. If you put in detailed information such as your gender, weight and heart rate, most new machines will do a very descent prediction of the calories burned. However, if you have put in nothing, or the machine is quite old, the calorie prediction could be off.

I have always felt that the elliptical trainer works you out much less than a treadmill, but that might just be the fact that you work against the machine vs working against your weight with the treadmill.

Anyway, it comes down to how much your heart is working. Your heart rate tells you how hard you are working out. I feel those calorie counts are very inflated, but are very motivating.

I agree with JENMC14, but when I enter my weight and age into the elliptical trainer, even though I am not going all out, I still get a higher calorie burn according to the machine than SP says. Really the only way to know is with a heart rate monitor or something. I just leave it as it is, since I don't have a heart rate monitor, so I don't personally know what I've burned. If the machine says I'm burning more calories than SP says, I'm not worried about the value being too high.

Good point! I wasn't planning on eating extra today! My trainer said I went 4 miles, but it is not the highest of quality. I think I will mentaly lower the calories a bit!
Thanks!!!

I don't know how accurate SP's tracker for the elliptical is since it's just a generic entry. There's no accounting for intensity or speed or anything like there is for the treadmill. I believe it gives you the same number regardless of if you went at a slow, meandering pace or a high intensity, heart-pumping pace. I'm not sure what pace it's set for. If you went all out, I might go a head and leave it, otherwise, I might subtract a few calories when calculating my deficit, just to stay on the "safe" side of things. I wouldn't want to regularly overestimate for a lot.

Hi I just did 30 minutes on my eliptical machine that I got a few days ago. The exercise tracker says I burned over 300 calories. Does anyone know if that is right? In my experience the exercise trackers are pretty acurate, but I would just like opinions!
